Inspirations & Ideation

PROJECT 2

Our second assignment is to create an illustration for editorial. “Varrom” will be the target magazine we will be working on. Looking at varroom, I could it’s magazine created for designers and those who are interested in illustrations and the Arts. There is a weird and dark twist in their topics, focusing on strange stories from people and society today. This is my target audience.

The topics given are ” Style”, “Obsession” and “Empathy”.

Once I heard “Obsession” I really wanted to select this topic. I had a conversation with a friend recently and we were talking about “love and rejections”. He told me about girl who had ignored his rejection to her love confession and decided to carve his name on her arm. It was terrifying to know that, yet it’s not the first time I heard of stories like this. It made me wonder how could someone be so obsessed about somebody else? Is it a phycological condition? Can it be cured?

So a quick google led me to this term, Obsessive Love Disorder.

Obsessive Love Disorder

Yup, a great example of Obsessive Love disorder is The story of The Great Gatsby.

Some description of Obsessive Love Disorder that I found really interesting.

  1. The person lives in a delusional love, that harms both himself and the Love object.
  2. Love Object. ( I like the sound of it)
  3. The person who loves obsessively may behave as if addicted to their love object. In turn, the object of obsessive love may have difficulty setting clear limits and boundaries on the obsessive behaviours.
  4. Unfortunately, obsessive love has been romanticised in literature for centuries, as well as by the media, once the media came into existence
  5. A person who obsessively loves may engage in escalating tools of psychological control, or other forms of control, in an effort to keep their love object close.
  6. Obsessive love can have its roots in childhood trauma and may begin at first sight.
  7. There’s no one single cause of OLD. Instead, it may be linked to other types of mental health disabilities such as:

Attachment disorders,  Borderline personality disorder,  Delusional jealousy,  Erotomania,  Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD),  Obsessional jealousy

Warning signs that someone is suffering from obsessive love

  • Low self-esteem/a tendency of needing excessive reassurance
  • Obsessively talking about their loved object
  • Making repeated calls, texts, and/or faxes to the love object
  • Unwanted intensive attention to the love object
  • A tendency to have extremely good or bad (not balanced) feelings about someone
  • A tendency to focus on only the positive or the negative aspects of their loved one
  • Trouble focusing on work, recreation, socializing, or other aspects of their lives outside of the object of their affection
  • Attempts to monitor or otherwise control their love object’s life and activities
  • Excessive joy, to the point of relief, when able to get in touch with or be with their love object

MINDMAP

We did an exercise in class to create a mind-map that links our topic with idioms, puns, personifications etc. Two sections was really interesting for me.

Idioms

  1. The apple of your eye
  2. Most prized possesion
  3. Love at first sight
  4. irresistible impulse
  5. Tunnel Vision

HIstorical

  1. In the classical world, the phenomenon of “love at first sight” was understood within the context of a more general conception of passionate love, a kind of madness or, as the Greeks put it, theia mania (“madness from the gods”)
  2. ATË – The Greek goddess, Atë, is the personification of the term, atë, in Greek mythology. She is known as the Greek goddess of evil, misfortune, obsession, guilt, infatuation, and mischief. She was known to lure men into actions that would end in their demise usually.

From the LOVE OBJECT’S perspective

I might want to portray this topic through the eyes of the Love Object. How does it feel to be the Love Object? Did you know that you are the love object? What if the love object likes it?  I did some research and interviewed some of my friends and the love object is actually in a very difficult position. To know that you are dealing with someone with a phycological problem, do you  give in to their request because they need it or ignore and reject them harshly? You will feel like the bad person. You feel trapped and you don’t feel safe.

I will be narrowing down what I want to focus on and how I want to portray this in my next post!
