YIN & YANG

The Moon and the Sun

How I came to this topic

I started out with the topic of South East Asia/ Asia orchestra and musical instruments. However the topic was too broad and I ended up lost. I came across this paragraph on the relationship of nature and Chinese music. In here, I noticed the used of balance and the importance of Yin and Yang in our culture.

“Music in the Zhou Dynasty was conceived as a cosmological manifestation of the sound of nature integrated into the binary universal order of yin and yang, and this concept has enduring influence later Chinese thinking on music. “Correct” music according to Zhou concept would involve instruments correlating to the five elements of nature and would bring harmony to nature.”

  • Wood feeds Fire.
  • Fire creates Earth (ash)
  • Earth bears Metal.
  • Metal collects Water.
  • Water nourishes Wood.

What is Yin and Yang?

In Chinese philosophy, yin and yang 陰陽 describe how seemingly opposite or contrary forces may actually be complementary, interconnected, and interdependent in the natural world, and how they may give rise to each other as they interrelate to one another.

(for instance, shadow cannot exist without light)

A circular symbol called the T’ai Chi represents the power beyond Yin and Yang that gives existence to all things.

Interesting explanations of Yin & Yang

Whenever one quality reaches its peak, it will naturally begin to transform into the opposite quality: for example, grain that reaches its full height in summer (fully yang) will produce seeds and die back in winter (fully yin) in an endless cycle.

+

Yin 陰 or 阴 a negative source/ The Moon Tàiyīn 太陰

Yang 陽 or 阳 a positive source/ The sun Tàiyáng 太陽

+

Yin 陰 or 阴,  is characterized as slow, soft, yielding, diffuse, cold, wet, and passive; and is associated with water, earth, the moon, femininity, and nighttime.

Yang 陽 or 阳, by contrast, is fast, hard, solid, focused, hot, dry, and active; and is associated with fire, sky, the sun, masculinity and daytime

+

Yin and yang transform each other: like an undertow in the ocean, every advance is complemented by a retreat, and every rise transforms into a fall.

Legend Says

Legend says that the Yin and Yang are controlled by the constellation of stars known as the Big Dipper in the West or as the Bushel in China.

+

Certain mythological events, such as the annual meetings of two divine lovers known as the Weaver Girl and the Herder, represent Yin and Yang coming together in proper unity.

牛郎織女 Cowherd and Weaver Girl

The story is now counted as one of China’s Four Great Folktales.

The general tale is a love story between Zhinü (織女; the weaver girl, symbolizing the star Vega) and Niulang (牛郎; the cowherd, symbolizing the star Altair). Their love was not allowed, thus they were banished to opposite sides of the Silver River (symbolizing the Milky Way Galaxy). Once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month, a flock of magpies would form a bridge to reunite the lovers for one day.

Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Sri Lanka, it is a Jataka tale detailing the story of Manoharan daughter of the Kinnara King who fell in love with Prince Sudhana.

In Korea, it revolves around the story of Jiknyeo, the weaver girl who falls in love with Gyeonwu

In Japan, the story revolves around the romance between the deities, Orihime and Hikoboshi.

In Vietnam, the story is known as Ngưu Lang Chức Nữ and revolves around Chức Nữ and Ngưu Lang.

Methods and Mood-boards

Mood1 has very calm tones. It has a really zen appeal, uses gradients and relies a lot on nature and its textures to show the contrast.

+

Mood 2 has stronger colours and energy. The contrast is really obvious and it has a more modern feel to it. Some inspiration came from the famous brand Shanghai Tang.
