4D Project 03: Genre and Narrative – The NET

Hi! So Jane and I decided to adapt the story of Hansel and Gretel into modern context.

Concept:
We decided to adapt a part from the story of Hansel and Gretel into modern context. We want to bring out the awareness and danger of meeting strangers online.

Hansel and Gretel by the Brothers Grimm:
The characters were left by their parents in the forest (unwanted, especially by stepmother), they got lost and found a house made of cake (were lost) and  and invited by the old grandma (meet a stranger) to come into the house for safety (trusted the stranger as looks reliable and promising on the outside). But the old grandma happen to be a witch who build the house of bread in order to lure and eat kids (it is a trap).

Adaptation:
Our character is someone who is studying abroad but unable to go home as the stepmother doesn’t allow her to do so due to financial issue (unwanted, especially by stepmother)Denied to go home, our character is mentally lost and down (were lost), she then chose to express her feeling online where she found a new guy friend (meet a stranger) who appears very caring and nice to her. She trusted him and finally ask him to meet up (trusted the stranger as looks reliable and promising on the outside). After they met, the guy actually kidnap her (it is a trap).

Gretel uses the tissue to wipe her tear, and then drinks that cup of water.

THE END

However after we filmed following the storyboard, we realised that the trailer will be boring if we follow the storyline hence the order of the scenes are edited in such a way to make it more interesting.

Inspiration:
At first we wanted to make a kind of thriller feel trailer, something that will give spine chilling mood like this:

However after we filmed we realised that it is quite extreme and required to take more extreme scenes, hence we  decided to create a more daily life mood trailer. Still about the danger of online stranger, this is our inspiration:

This trailer focuses on the victim’s side and how her life and surroundings are negatively affected. The mood it gives is really feel like daily life and can happen to anyone.

Challenges:
The very first challenge is to find the actors and find suitable timings for everyone. Due to difficulties in finding common time, our first filming took was from 11pm to 3am in the morning while the second filming started 10 pm also.

The greatest challenge that we have is that we filmed at quite low quality (640x480px) and we didn’t have any other time to refill everything. As such we purposely put noise effect at different level during the whole duration of the trailer. Another positive side is that it takes quite an acceptable renderring time for the video.

Another challenge is that neither of us have any experience in video editing before and we were first introduced to PremierPro during the 4D lesson. However, with the help from the lesson and many Youtube videos, I personally find that editing video is quite fun and it is something that I will continue to learn along the way.

Also, a challenging part is to actually find suitable music for the trailer. At the end we decide to go with “Heart Cry Remix [Extended Version]” by Drehz (iTunes) which Jane successfully found.

Questions and Answers:

Q. Why ‘the NET’?
A. The ‘net’ is actually short form taken from interNET. And at the same time we want it to bring the message of net used to capture fishes and other animal to bring the idea of trap, confinement and victim.

net2 net

Q. In the original tale the characters are Hansel and Gretel, why do you adapt into only one character?
A. We only have Gretel as we decided to fuse and combine both Hansel and Gretel’s characteristic into one character, Gretel.
Hansel: brave, optimistic, hopeful
Gretel: easily influenced, pessimistic
Our Gretel has all the mentioned characteristics, the transition is before and after she remembers her father’s words.
Part one: Gretel as someone who is easily influenced by Wilson and pessimistic, easily give up and being melancholy
Part two: Gretel as someone who is brave and optimistic, have the hope to escape

Q. Is there any reason for the naming of the characters?
A. The main character is fully named ‘Gretel Hans’ to give the idea of combination of Hansel and Gretel. And as our character is female, we take the first name from the original story’s girl. And for the antagonist name ‘Wilson Itch’ is actually a long form from Witch (Wilson Itch.

Q. Why do you use that font?
A. We want to bring back the fairy tale book concept, hence we are choosing font that looks like handwriting. However it is not so consistent with the whole video  that this intention is not potrayed clearly enough in the video.

Q. Is there any intended meaning in the video effect used?
A. The noise effect is used along the way as style of the video. For the colour part, it is to show the present and what is happening, it is noisy and grainies to show the dizzines of Gretel when she just woke up in the unknown. While the black and white is more grainy to show it is an unclear but memorable memory from the past and flashback of what happened.

Q. Is it supposed to be an open ending trailer?
A. Yes. We purposely want the audience to be curious about how the ending would be and keep it with their own imagination. As such, we chose a relatively neutral music that gives a glimpse of hope but also has melancholy and thrill.

Hope you enjoy the video! 😀

4D Project 2: Sequentially – Impossibilities of Being

Hi!

So for our 4D Project 2, we are required to take 90 pictures and combine them to tell a story.

Final Video:

Title: BFF 4 Life

Inspiration:

The main storyline is adapted form a Korean Drama titled ‘Personal Taste’. It was based on the main character (Park Gae-In) past.

adaptation

Synopsis:

The main character just lost her dog due to an accident when she left her dog with her bestie hence she is blaming her bestie for the death. She got into a dream that recalls the night of the accident. During the dream her subconscious reminded her that actually she didn’t tie the dog’s leash properly before leaving it to her bestie, so actually it was her fault! Then she recalls all the bad and mean things she did to the bestie, feeling so guilty and depressed. However the bestie came to her dream, forgive her and they reconcile! 😀

Artist references:

  • Posterised facial expression
Inspired by Andy Warhol’s: The Shot of Marilyns. It is part of a mass-produced images of celebrities Warhol created in the 1960s. He painted Marilyn that had different brightly coloured background with different color and representational form to convey different sensations and emotions.
Installation view of Andy Warhol: The Shot Marilyns, 1964

Hence, the facial expressions in my photos are posterise so that different color can help enhance the feeling and emotions conveyed (more intense color showing more emotional condition).

  • Colourful fairy effect
Inspired by fairy photos in Paul Johnson Photography , which show the fairy to be in bright color while the surrounding is dark, I decided to give the colourful effect when the main character became a fairy in the dream.

Reflections: I realise that my story has become far too complicated for 90 photos. If I could redo it I will focus on simple but effective photos. Moreover, I should take another person to be the bestie to avoid confusion of the already complicated story. On the other side, I really enjoy the planning and execution process of this project.

Special thanks: To those who have helped me take pictures at weird timings and places of the day, really thankful and appreciate it :)!
Kezia Agatha : photos in the bedroom 😀
Angelysia Cardella: photos at Nanyang Hill in the middle of the night :”’)

Thank you for reading! I really enjoy this project and hope to learn more about 4D 🙂

4D Project 1: Picture Story – Curating Self

Task 1: Me

When we were told to introduce myself through photos the very first thing that I thought was I am an Indonesian who has been studying in Singapore for several years and counting. So here I start!

My very first photo is about Indonesian food arranged in a box. They were put inside a box to show that they were not local and has been packed to Singapore. My photo was taken at medium close up with man focus on the ‘IndoMie’ at the center. I chose ‘IndoMie’ as it is a famous food from Indonesia that we can find in Singapore. Moreover, the food was arranged as such the front part are Indonesian medicine and herbal drinks, the middle part consist of instant food (instant noodle, instant porridge and instant cereal) and the last one to be Indonesian food that need to be cooked, like the beef jerky, salt and seasonings. This photo like showing different type of Indonesian food.

Task 1 – Photo 1

The second photo is about Indonesian clothing of Batik. It was taken with medium long shot, a picture of me wearing a batik dress right to my wardrobe which is filled with other batik as well. It shows how I like to wear a Batik due to its pattern and comfortable material.

Image (22)
Task 1 – Photo 2

The last photo for this task is an Indonesian flag among many other country’s flags. It’s showing my pride and love for indonesia, especially as an international country, Indonesia appear to be the only clear one for me.

Image (18)
Task 1 – Photo 3

To conclude task 1, the message I want to say is that even though I have been in Singapore for many years, I still have my Indonesian spirit with me! 😀

Artist reference: Yasumasa Morimura’s artworks of “Daughter of Art History“, especially on Mona Lisa part where she focuses on one individu in one pose, yet she can bring out many different and new aspect her when she edited the photo. Just like her focusing on one individu to express many other things, my task 1 I am focusing on my nationality yet at the same time exploring many different aspect of it.

Task 2: Object and representation of self

The object I chose is my portable sewing machine! I have a very profound memory with it as I used many times when I was in the Orientation preparation team in JC and I found that I really enjoy sewing. The first photo is a full figure shot of the sewing machine. I chose the the front side as it gives the classical feeling a sewing machine. Somehow this angle gives a combination of old-styled object and modern model of the machine.

Image (7)
Task 2 – Photo 1

The second photo is high angle of me putting the thread before the machine can be used. I want to show that I prepare the machine before using it.

Image (8)
Task 2 – Photo 2

The last photo is a low angle photo of me using the machine. With one hand on the presser bar lifter and the other one holding the fabric, I show that I was about to start the sewing process. The shot also capture my smile which perfectly display my feeling when I am sewing.

Image (26)
Task 2 – Photo 3

To summarize task 2, I want to portray that I enjoy sewing and I like my sewing machine so much. It has a deep meaning to me as it help me went through stressful period and because of the fact that it was given by a good friend.

Artist reference: Richard Billingham’s photobook “Ray’s A Laugh where he could perfectly show the relationship between his parents with very homey and warm background. It heartwarmingly tell the condition and feelings of them. I hope my picture which was also taken wiith warm colour can heartwarmingly portray the relationship between me and my sewing machine.

Task 3: My World

About the last task, I had a long time deciding which place should I go to. Honestly I didn’t really have any specific favorite place in Singapore as I like so many places! So I decided to choose the places where I have been spending most of my time in my last 5 years stay in Singapore, my hostels.

The first photo was about my very first hostel named Parry Hall in Kovan, which I stayed from November to December 2011. It was a short 2 months stay during English bridging course but the friendship there has left a great memory. One of the reason I chose to take the shot in the morning was that we always left by bus very early in morning. The photo was taken at taken in the early morning with extreme long shot.

Task 3 – Photo 2

The second photo was about my second hostel when I was studying in Anderson Secondary School from 2012 to 2013. The hostel name is Anderson Junior College Hostel in Ang Mo Kio and was taken on the afternoon. One of the reason I chose afternoon was that I used to come back from school in the afternoon. The photo was taken from low angle with extreme long shot.

Image (10)
Task 3 – Photo 3

The last photo was about my third and last hostel before I went to NTU, St. Andrew’s Hall in Potong Pasir. I stayed there when I was studying in St. Andrew’s JC from 2014 to 2015. One of the reason I took the shot at night was that I went back to quite late to the hostel most of the time. The photo was an extreme long shot taken from low angle.

To conclude, personally task 3 is about places that have been my home since the time I came to Singapore in 2011. They all were equally significant to me in a way I cannot describe, each place has left different memorable memories. The timing of the photo taking was purposely planned to show the order of the hostels (early morning – afternoon – night). Also, it was because I spent most of my day there, literally from morning to night!

Artist reference: Luigi Bussolati series of “A Few Houses” in which he photographed different houses with different environment and timings. As most of his photos capture mostly the surroundings of the house, they really give out clue and feeling of the kind of house it is. I hope my photos can give out that feeling as well.

Finally, here is how my photos were arranged for the critique session:

So yeay! It marks the end of my Project 1 for 4D! Hope you enjoy it and have a nice day!
