Figure in space – Prefinal and Final

I went for consultation last week and apparently I still sees shapes as it is instead of viewing them in a group.

They should be more like this some what.

Also, I should do my light test or compositions in small sizes so it is easier to see the whole image. Instead of trying to render one whole page of light test. I was trying to test out pastel in class but somehow it turned out not bad. Woonlam also said that I could submit that but together with another piece perhaps with a different composition because that piece of paper is actually smaller in size compared to the required.

For the colours, I tried using all the browns and maybe some purple for both of the composition.

The first composition

I should probably try to pick different subject and shine the lights in them instead of doing them all at the same time. The lighting could have bigger surface area for a particular but none for another.

As for the second composition, I honestly that the composition looks okay in my sketchbook. It did not look that empty but once I put it out on the big paper, somehow all the spaces look so awkward and empty like there is barely any environment.

I honestly had fun with this assignment, to be able to test out a medium I have not try before (pastel) and also gaining new techniques from it even thought my final pieces did not go as planned. I also have a fear of drawing on big pieces of paper since they will enlarge the mistakes. However, the more I draw on big pieces of paper I have grown to accept them and also of course learn the mistakes from those previous class activities.

For the final assignment, I have tried out some composition test before picking out the one that I wanted to work on. I also did a lighting test for the composition that I picked out. After the consultation for my lighting test and composition, I need to edit that  spaces between the different element to give them more contrast. Also, apparently i should refrain from contouring too harshly for the subjects. I need to instead try to smooth them out and simplify the general shadow of them. For the elements in the background I should also take note of the different sizes I could play with to make the space more interesting.

For the interior design, I was recommended to look at Vuillard’s painting. His painting are drawn in a way that even though it looks simple but it is actually detailed enough for us to be able to tell what object he is painting.

The paintings on the way are barely visible but yet we are able to tell that those are actually paintings.

The fact that he also manages to let us feel the sense of space through his painting is really intriguing.

As for the lighting and shadows there is Caravaggio. The way he plays with the shadows to bring our eyes to the main subject of the painting. The way he uses shadows is also different in a sense that they are smooth and blended together with the lighting to give it a more subtle effect.

I will update on my work in progress for the final draft before attempting on the final piece. For the final piece, I would be using pastel.

Figure in space – General idea

For this assignment, I thought of drawing rhinos after our trip to the zoo. I also thought drawing dogs into the composition. For the environment of what I wanted them to be in I honestly thought of a cityscape. But after thinking some more, I think I might actually try to experiment with the different composition and type of environment that I want them to be in. I will try to in-cooperate a rhino, dog and humans into the illustration. As for the medium, I was actually thinking of using pastels or paint. For the colour, I will be going for gray scale.

I actually tried out some sketches of the rhino and the dog. Perhaps I might use more than one dog in the composition but I thought of just using one rhino for my composition. The dog(s) and the people reacting to the rhino.

For the artist reference, I thought of referencing Van Gogh. I was thinking of trying to go for the surrealism feeling for my artwork. I also really like the patchy feeling he uses for his artworks. Like his famous work the starry night and his self-portraits. I like how his artworks gives off a sort of whimsical feeling to them.

Chiaroscuro drawing

We had to drawing the model using only the different tonal values, without having to contour harsh outlines using charcoal. I find it pretty interesting actually, I have always thought that lighting is a very hard thing to do, but I guess after having that session last week, I realised it is the mid-tone that actually makes the difference in the contrast now. Since I have always thought that it is the lighter or the darkest value that actually changes an image.

Drawing through observation

First lesson, we went to the canteen to humans. However, instead of having to draw and contour the outline of objects and people we did scribbles. But not mindless scribble, its by judging which is the white and negative spaces of the image within a frame.

“Draw with the eyes, not with your brain.”

I had a terrible first shot since i have been taught to already draw in a certain style. Though i like this better, it is rather relaxing really. Sometimes doing the most minimal thing can make a great difference. To view something from the bigger image instead of having to concentrate on only one subject.
