DA2002 Art Final Piece

The Final Piece is painted with reference to my partner-Yan Min.

Acrylic paint and markers are used as the main medium in this painting.

The idea that I want to bring across in this art piece is her personality. My first impression of her was that she was a cool person, and possibly slightly aloof. However, after getting to know her better, I start to see the more feminine and friendly side of her. I begin to understand that she is a sweet person and gain a better understanding of the things she likes.

This is why the Design Principle used here is Emphasis. Emphasis can be seen on the ice cube since the color is a lot lighter in contrast to the shirt. The emphasis on the ice cube signifies my first impression of her-a cool person. As the audience starts to look at the bigger picture(background), they gain a better understanding of what makes Yan Min, Yan Min. It is as if they start to look inside of her. This is concurrent to my better understanding of who she is. Which is then represented by objects of her interest-Lollipop, Kiiroitori, Mamegoma, etc.

The next Design Principle used here is  Line of Sight. This can be seen when the audience look into Yan Min’s eyes, to only see it staring right back at them!

Cool colors(Blue) are chosen for her shirt. This is concurrent to the first impression that I have of her. Blue is also intentionally chosen because it is one of Yan Min’s favorite color.

A mixture of warm colors(Peach, warm pink, warm grey) are chosen for the background. This is to help better represent the softer and more friendly side of her.

Details and highlights are also drawn to make her portrait more realistic.

Crayon Scratch

20161004_170022_hdr

Two thumbnails were sketched. Both are sketched with regards to the ADM building. The latter one (on the right) was picked. I then proceed to shade the area on the thumbnail that I intended to paint black.

The door and the fences were placed/photographed using the Rule of thirds.

img-20161004-wa0026

The piece was first colored using crayons. The idea was to create Emphasis on the door by choosing brighter colors. Lighting and shadows were also reflected to create depth.

img-20161004-wa0027

Subsequently, the black paint was applied. The back of the brush was then used to assist scratching the details for the trees, fences, the panels on the building wall, and the reflection of the tree off ADM building. Thicker brushes were used to create thicker marks for the trees located nearer to the door. This is because the trees are nearer. Hence, bigger.

Colour Mixing

Assignment 4 was on colour mixing.

img-20160920-wa0002

This assignment was completed using only primary colors-Red, Yellow and Blue. We were also allowed to use Black and White to aid painting the light and the shadow.

I repainted my objects several times in my attempt to get the right shade of color. In the finishing touch, I added a tint of red over the green cup, both on the inner and the outer rim. Shadows and light were also added at the appropriate places as advised.

Rule of third, Rule of odds and Balance was used. The glass cup, green cup and blue  paper is placed using Rule of third. The three pieces of green paper at the right shows the application of Rule of odds. Balance is the white in the glass cup and the tinge of white on the cloth in the foreground.

DA2002 Assignment 1 Process (Attempt no. 3)

This is my 3rd attempt at Assignment 1.

Attempt no.1 and no. 2 can be found here:  https://oss.adm.ntu.edu.sg/ayeo013/2016/09/05/da2002-assignment-1-process/

20160930_164927_hdr

Urban, attempt no. 3: In this attempt, Rule of thirds was applied. I placed the focus of the composition and the line cutting across (horizontally) using Rule of thirds.

In attempt no. 2, I varied the building height. In attempt no. 3, I also varied the distance that the buildings are placed from each other. In doing so, I hope to create more contrast. Hence, more for the eye to see.

20160930_161600_hdr

Nature, attempt no. 3: The focus of the composition is now placed using Rule of third. The leaves of the flower has been increased from 2 to 3 applying Rule of odds.

The lines outlining the petals and the details on the petals are now varied. The thickness for the petals are varied throughout the petals itself and across the different petals. The details on the petals (lines and dots) and the distance between them are also varied to create more contrast.

In this attempt, the length and shape of the petals are boldly distinctive from each other as compared to attempt no. 2. Once again, this is to create more contrast.

Also, the leaves (towards the left of the flower) are of different shades.

Black & White Composition

Assignment 3 was completed with reference to Disney’s Beauty & the Beast.

Firstly, 5 thumbnail sketches!

20160912_160046_HDR

Frame 1: The Prince was offered a rose in exchange for a place to stay.

Rule of third, Line of Sight, Framing, Rhythm and Movement was used in the composition. The Prince and the lines outlining the bricks of the castle was placed using Rule of third. Line of sight was the old lady looking at the Prince. Framing was the Prince being framed by the castle door while placing emphasis on him. Similarly, the lines outlining the castle’s bricks were also directing viewer’s attention to him. This is movement. Rhythm can be found in the lines outlining the castle’s bricks!

The lines outlining the bricks of the castle are also of different thickness and placed with varied distances. This is to create contrast and more for the eye to see.

Frame 2: The Prince became a Beast!

Balance, Movement, Framing and Rule of third was used. The pink used was balance throughout the composition. The Rose was framed by the window, directing attention there. The lines in the composition were all pointing towards the beast, such as the ones on the ground and the ones in the window frame. This enables movement. The Beast and the Rose was placed using Rule of Third.

Frame 3: Belle singing a song while walking towards the Bookstore.

Rule of odds and Emphasis was used. Rule of odds can be seen with the three music notes and three main clusters of tree in the background. Emphasis can be found on the enlarged music note in the middle since it is larger than the other notes.

Frame 4: Belle reading her favorite book while the sheeps peek!

Rule of third, Rule of odds and Line of sights were used. The sheeps and Belle’s hands was placed using Rule of third. Rule of odds can be seen since there is only three main objects in the composition- two sheeps and Belle. Line of sights was used as Belle and the sheeps are all looking at the book.

Frame 5: Belle and Beast dancing in the ballroom.

Balance and Rhythm was used. The pink on Belle’s dress balances with the pink at the background of the composition. Rhythm can be found in the pink infrastructure outlining the ballroom’s floor.

Acrylic Painting

Story line: A fisherman was fishing and accidentally dropped his sock into the water.  A fish swam towards it out of curiosity and got stuck.

PaintAll

Above are the paintings done by my group mates and myself.

The Design Principles used in each paintings are as follow :

  1. Balance
  2. Movement
  3. Rhythm
  4. Emphasis
  5. Emphasis

IMG-20160830-WA0003-1-1

The fifth painting was done by me.

The Design Principle used was Emphasis.

“Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.”

In my painting, the Emphasis was on the sock and the fish tail. It stood out in terms of size since it is larger by a lot. It also stood out since the color used was really bright. The details on the sock also aid in making it stand out.

Process:

Firstly, I gradient the water. Since light was shining down from the top, I used a portion of white to two portions of blue. As I continued downwards, I swapped out the portion of white for a portion of green. A portion of green to three portions of blue was used. Towards the bottom, I swapped the portion of green to red. Hence, a portion of red to three portions of blue was used. I scooped the portions of paint onto the paper before mixing and doing the gradient on the paper itself.

Subsequently, I painted the little fishes in the background. A tint of diluted blue paint was applied to dull the bright orange paint. This is because the Emphasis was on the sock and the fish tail. Hence nothing else should stand out.

Next, I painted the sock. A portion of brown, two portions of blue and five portions of white was used. After setting the base color of the sock, white paint was used to add in details(lines). Also, a tint of diluted white paint was painted over parts of the socks where light would fall on.

Lastly, the fish tail was painted in. Bright orange paint was generously applied. Since the Emphasis is on the sock and fish tail. Both should stand out in the picture.

DA2002 Assignment 1 Process (Attempt no. 1 & no. 2)

Assignment: Reinterpret elements in a photo into basic lines and shapes using different mediums.

Many

To start off, 4 different variations in thumbnail size was produced. Urban themed sketch on the left while the Nature ones on the right. The idea that I wanted to bring across in each thumbnail was quickly annotated in each frame, to the bottom right.

Urban1

Urban, attempt no. 1: The inspiration for this drawing was the skyline of cities in general. Only lines was used because I wanted to convey the idea of rigidness in a city. Triangles are also deployed to signify the possible dangers in a city, such as death from construction sites and the imminent death from pollution. Also, different shades of black and grey was used to show the dullness.

Charcoal was used for the “fumes” in the sky to show the carbon and toxins engulfing the city. Charcoal was also used to create texture in the water, and to signify the pollution caused to water.

Urban2

Urban, attempt no. 2: The same idea was deployed. However, I increased the contrast between the focus of the drawing and its surrounding buildings. This is done to create more emphasis on the main building in the middle. I also varied the width and height of the buildings.

Nature, attempt no. 1: The inspiration for this drawing was a zoom up image of a large flower. I wanted to use lines, dots and shapes to show the organic nature of the flower. To show the complexity and beauty of nature closed up.

I dotted the petals of the flower, decreasing it’s density from inside out. In doing this, I wanted to show the depth of the petals when it’s being looked straight on.  Lines are used to show the crisp petals and leaves, just like how it would look while basking under the morning sun!

Nature2

Nature, attempt no. 2: Once again, the same idea was deployed. However, I varied the width of the petals and leaves. I also alternate dots and lines on the petals to further enhance the complexity and beauty that can be found in nature. The same concept of depth as mentioned in attempt no. 1 is still used.

In the background, I switched the crisscross lines to spirals. This is to better represent the variations that nature possess. Some spirals are also darker and thicker to show contrast.
