2D II Project 1 | Que Sera Sera – Initial Exploration and Ideas

Typography Artist, David Carson –

I really liked David Carson’s method of typography with respect to the way he used small letters, juxtaposed on one another, congested, to create chaos in the background. I am considering incorporating this in my compositions.

Dadaism in Typography –

I haven’t actually tried Dadaism before, but I am considering it for this project. Hannah Hoch’s dada art is a good reference for images, but it’s a little confusing to incorporate Dadaism with Typography, especially when there are no fixed rules for the design. But it’s exciting to see such interesting examples of an abstract approach.

Exploration in Dadaism and Photomontage

These were some examples of Photomontage which I thought were interesting in terms of color scheme and composition.

Concept – Jobs

___________________________________________________________________________________________

I wanted to pursue a lot of career paths over the course of my studies – there was nothing I hadn’t considered

– Mason, Doctor, Architect, Artist, Engineer, Businesswoman, etc.

However, out of these, I narrowed down the 4 jobs that I liked the most –

  1. CODER
  2. ENTREPRENEUR
  3. GRAPHIC DESIGNER
  4. ANIMATOR

Message – Future of Women in Careers

___________________________________________________________________________________________

The message I wanted to touch upon through my compositions was women’s future in careers. Through personal observation and general cases, I have noticed that careers often take a backseat when it comes to women. Not always due to force or societal norms, but sometimes because of personal responsibility towards their family and household, women choose to sacrifice their careers. Hence, I want to show how women are affected by family in their careers.

Photoshop Trials

___________________________________________________________________________________________

I tried one composition based on Dadaism – for the first job, i.e., Coder. Since there were no specific rules to Dadaism and I wanted to do Photomontage, I tried a test composition to show Prof. Joy. This composition has a lot of coding jargon and the face of Alan Turing, the father of coding, whose eyes are blinded by an error message. There is also an ‘Are you sure?’ window pop up in the background suggesting an ominous vibe to the career. I incorporated my name by highlighting certain letters of computer commands.

Individual Consultation

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Prof. Joy approved of my Concept of Jobs and Message. However, she suggested that I take a stand on the topic of women sacrificing their careers – either in a positive twist showing benefits, or a feminist approach showing the demerits, or a social commentary showing both aspects. I was unclear about my tone because I wanted to adopt dadaism and photomontage, but it was difficult to bring across the message through abstract collages of images. So Joy suggested to explore a different tone like subliminal dark humour, or even adopt colour schemes of animated movies since animation was my major. Else, if I were to continue with Dadaism, I would have to do a deeper analysis on dada art and the movements and time period affecting it, and its relation to feminism. I felt that Dadaism probably wasn’t the best way to approach my ideas, so I rejected it.

More Photoshop Trials

Using the color scheme of Mulan, I tried a composition for the Coder, using a minimalistic computer and a keyboard typeface to write my name. However, this was awfully boring and the message was missing.

Hoping to gain a more cohesive idea of my Concept, Message and Tone soon!
