Calligrams

A word or piece of text in which the design and layout of the letters create a visual image related to the meaning of the words themselves.

Guillaume Apollinaire calligrammes, 1918

Usually, texts force one to imagine and visualise what the writer wants to convey. Calligrams takes this away and allows the reader to skip this step while reading their texts, however, I feel that this gives the image straight off to the reader and fixates the image of the writer wants to convey, restricting what the reader’s imagination. This is how calligrams are created.

Calligrams can also be misleading and portray the total opposite of what the texts are about.  These are famous works of French poet Guillaume Apollinaire who wanted to push poetry and writing to more than just text and verse, he then became well-known for his works of calligrams.

These visual representations of poetry allow readers to feel and see something new especially back then. It definitely opens the minds of artists and the public. Guillaume Apollinaire was definitely one of those artists who are well ahead of time and with their ideas, they shape the future. Guillaume Apollinaire was also rejected a lot by the public and other artists for his ideas, but I’ve learnt that to innovate, one has to be accepting of new ideas and perspective and open to considering different options.
