Painting Progress

FINAL WORK WIP #1

This is a picture that I took when I was in Taiwan. I chose this picture mainly for its tight composition. However, the lighting in this picture is quite even out, so I think I might have some problems trying to emote the mood through lighting when I am painting.

Colour TestsĀ

I believe that I had better control with tonal difference in my second colour test but I think there is still a lack in my lighting control. I also feel like I need to have better control with my neutral colours.

This was a draft I did after considering the comments given. I think my colours are more cohesive now and the picture is really coming together. But I think I have to increase the chroma of 1 or 2 buildings to raise the contrast of the picture as a whole.

  1. Good use of greens for the paintings of trees. And you see them better in Shiskhin’s artworks too. So learn to create transitional colors the same way for other color scheme as well.
Chee’s fish painting, he creates a lot of different soft edges. Don’t make all hard edges.
The tonal study images: You need to plan the proportion before you work, else the proportion is too even, and you can’t generate the required mood.
Good use of colors for the interior painting. Keep some edges firm — cos architectural elements have firmer edges.
The very first 2 painting, now you know why the colors are a bit too sudden. You can create more transitional colors now.

  2. George James is a great image designer. It takes a lot of courage to break out from the recognizable shapes and connect them with design. However, your exploration of colors and shapes are nice. Good effort. Next step is to learn to ‘Not see the things’ and read the shapes so that you can see the design and color fast.
