Colour Variations
Tried working on the colours. The foreground has too many details so I was thinking the background should be plain or simple. The layers behind with lower opacity give off a motion blur or 3D effect. Could be a nice transition when animated!
Referenced this animation still for the colours. Gives off a very calm and mystical feel — something I hope to achieve in my composition!
Week 9 Progress
Week 9, 13th October 2016
Came up with a few compositions but still worried about the resolution! Not sure if I should start playing with colours.
Week 8 Progress
Week 8, 6th October 2016
Creating the motifs is quite fun as there are lots of variations. Most of them look like tile designs!
Week 6 Progress
Week 6, 22nd September 2016
Was busy preparing for industry review so I didn’t have time to upload my motifs. Sorry! Will be posting what I did every week.
I’ve tried a few compositions based on what I had at that time and it looked very messy and unclean. Decided to rescan my work and stylise it even further.
After cleaning up and tracing it on illustrator…
Traced it on Illustrator again after cleaning up. However, some details were lost so I decided to stick for the first one (above).
A close up of the twirls 😀
Topography Motif (In Progress)
I took awhile to decide on my technique because I wasn’t sure on how I could represent the contour lines of a topography map. I came across Christoph Bader’s works and was inspired to try out the Paper Quilling technique to create my motifs.
Christoph Bader’s Paper Quilling work on Behance
I wanted to work on a topography map of Singapore, but the map was too huge to capture to generate a contour map on SketchUp. Decided to grab a map region of our town area instead.
It is a tedious process but the contour lines can still be visualised even after gluing the pieces together. In my opinion, paper quilling is the best form of representation of a topography map.
I’m still playing around with the colours and working on the motifs! Will update soon.
Supernatural City – MIRAGE & TOPOGRAPHY
THEME 1 – MIRAGE
Mirage, seemingly a natural occurrence, is inherently metaphysical. Our world is a mirage that we weave with our innate minds. There will never be an absolute distinction between what we see and what we perceive. A rising sun may appear to signal the beginning of a new day, this is but an illusion that we live in and take for granted. In reality, it means darkness for people living on the other side of the world. Mirage is a visual representation that binds the transcendental with comprehension and interpretation.
Mirage is something illusory, without substance or reality. Our unrealistic expectations may be a form of mirage, which can be depicted as an abstract representation of hope that cannot be achieved.
THEME 2 – TOPOGRAPHY
Instead of analysing urban objects, why not take a step back to observe the bigger picture? Inspired by Luis Dilger, I was intrigued by the topography of cities and how they can be represented in various forms.
