History of Design – Lecture 4 Reflection

Futura

Strangely enough, the thing that caught my attention during this week’s lecture was the typeface Futura (which was fleetingly mentioned). I’ve always had an inclination to it, without knowing why it appealed to me so much. Anyway, I recalled watching a video on Vox on Futura’s history and how landed on the moon! Pretty neat stuff. Below I’ve linked the video!

To an amateur like me trying to get acquainted with Typography, this was really eye-opening as I got to see how Type is influenced by the political and social environment, moves through the world, and eventually in its own ways, changes the world.

Then I found a video that uses interesting pace, layout and letter croppings to introduce more facts on the typeface. I felt that the use of the video/animation medium helped me visualise certain things better than static layouts could. Here it is:

In the Vox video, it is mentioned how various fashion labels, artists, designers and other influential figures of the visual world have used Futura for a myriad of purposes. But to me, the most iconic coupling with Futura would definitely be Wes Anderson. Perhaps because it was through his work that I was introduced, in the first place, to Futura. Anyway, here’s another video on their love story. (sorry I really prefer watching videos to gain KNOWLEDGE)

Reimagined Bauhaus Logo Designs

While doing general research, I came across this article which I thought was pretty cool. A variety of designers created Bauhaus versions of famous corporate logos according to the five principles of Bauhaus (Form follows function, Minimalism, Revolutionary typography, Passion for geometry & Primary colors). Here are some that I really enjoyed:

Form follows function:

Minimalism:

Primary Colours:

Additionally, I also found an article with a gorgeous infographic on the history of Bauhaus. Thought I might share it here:
