IMAGE MAKING THROUGH TYPE

PROJECT BRIEF

Create typographic portraits by using your name to describe your future jobs.

MY NAMES AND JOBS

Mindmap

I started this project with mind mapping with the job titles and the possible ways to represent the job. The chosen jods are listed below:

MY NAME IS BD AND I AM A PRODUCT DESIGNER

MY NAME IS BELLA AND I AM A MALA RESTAURANT OWNER

MY NAME IS BELLA AND I AM A VISUAL MERCHANDISER

MY NAME IS BELLA AND I AM A BARTENDER

MY NAME IS BD AND I AM A PRODUCT DESIGNER

Overview

Product design, in my own words, is the process of problem-solving. There are a lot of steps involved in the process such as market research, ideation, prototyping, manufacturing, marketing and etc. Graphic design is also important to promote the product, for instance, product posters and packing. Therefore, I decided to incorporate my name into the ‘product design poster’.

Research
Product Design Presentation http://www.coroflot.com/davidclarkin/Sketchbook
Product Design Presentation https://www.pinterest.com/pin/490118371941214665/

I started my research by looking at different product design presentation style. Some are pen or pencil sketches with marker rendering and some are purely digital rendering.

Dyson Fan http://www.g-mark.org/award/describe/36333?token=oDzi8yCdWS
Sketch

I sketched out some composition and decided to use 3D software to deconstruct my initial, BD. Further, I chose the font based on my experience in learning product design for three years. Century Gothic is frequently used in product design as it is clean and sleek. I referred to the design language of Dyson, a well-recognized household appliances brand for my 3D alphabet model.

Process

3D Model in Keyshot
Test Print

In the 3D model, components like buttons, and ventilation were added to the alphabet to make it seems like an electronic product. I used Keyshot, a 3D rendering software to add realistic material effects to the alphabet. Further, I went through a few run of test print to adjust the colour, lighting and choosing the right paper.

My initial idea was to use special paper and printing technique to show the different views of the 3D alphabet. However, I was told that this kind of print is only available in a few printing factories in Singapore, and it will be very costly. Thus, I changed my composition to four sets of BD in the different colours, like how products are available in a range of colours in the series.

MY NAME IS BELLA AND I AM A MALA RESTAURANT OWNER

Overview

#ispotthealphabets

To own a Mala hotpot restaurant is one of my dream jobs, since Mala hotpot is my favorite food, and it was from my hometown Sichuan in China. Initially, I was thinking of using the raw ingredients in mala to form my name (like some food commercial like to do in the advertisement). However, I found a more interesting concept after the lesson about Pareidolia and doing the in-class assignment, I Spot the Alphabets. Therefore, I started doing experiments to find the food that is able to represent my name.

Research

I had some test shots and researching on how to take good photos of food. There are a few videos available on youtube about food commercial photo shoot techniques and tricks. Also, I consulted some of my friends who has photography background for suggestions. The style is this concept is commercial food photo to show that I am the owner of the restaurant instead of the chief or just food lover.

Process
DIY Photo Studio

I set up a DIY studio on my table in my room with white paper and a 12 dollars portable table lamp. I bought mala hotpot from my hall restaurant and also bought some other raw ingredients such as chili and Chinese parsley that are normally used to decorate the food. The hotpot restaurant agreed to lend me a small stainless steel pot.

After setting up the lighting and pot, I started to arrange the food layer by layer to make sure the ‘alphabet ingredients’ stands out from the ‘background ingredients’. I brushed extra oil on the ‘alphabet ingredients’ to emphasize the contrast. Here I used mushroom, prawn, and crab sticks to represent the name of my alphabet. Some ingredients are raw and brushed with oil. It is because some ingredients have better shapes when they are raw, such as, crab sticks and dry chili.

Editing in Photoshop

I increased the saturation of the  ‘alphabet ingredients’ to maximize the contrast. Also, the steam effect was edited in the photo to create the focal point, and avoid the artwork to be too pictorial.

Test Print

Lastly, I test print the artwork and adjusted the saturation, and capacity of the steam to achieve the ideal effect on paper.

MY NAME IS BELLA AND I AM A VISUAL MERCHANDISER

Overview

Visual Merchandiser is the job that I will probably pursue in the future. Visual merchandiser’s role is to design the layout and display of the store in order to improve the customer’s shopping experience and increase the sells. Thus, my concept for this job is to incorporate my name into the window display.

The window display is a three-dimensional space. It often has a different theme according to the season and festivals. Therefore, I decided to have a Valentine’s Day theme for my window display.

Process

For this concept, I used both traditional media and digital media. First, I used paper to constructed the display and used my table lamp to create the lighting.

MY NAME IS BELLA AND I AM A BARTENDER

Overview
Bartender

Working in the bar and have knowledge of different drinks is one of the dreams. Initially, I planned to have different alcohol bottles to have the label of my name. However, it seems to be pictorial after the consultation with my professor. Therefore, I decided to use the flow of liquid to create my name.

The World’s First Collaborative Sentence 1994 – Pioneer of The Multiple Authorship

These screenshots show the historic version of the Sentence viewed through an early version of the Netscape browser http://whitney.org/Exhibitions/Artport/DouglasDavis#206-11

Douglas Davis, the creator of one of the earliest artwork on the world wide web, The World’s First Collaborative Sentence 1994. It allows everyone to contribute words, video, photographs, sounds and etc. to this long sentence in the collective third space. It was commissioned by the Lehman College Art Gallery, Bronx, N.Y. and The City University of New York, with the assistance of Gary Welz, Robert Schneider, and Susan Hoeltzel. Up to date, there are two versions of the sentence. One is the historical version and another is open to new contributions.

Screenshot of the website when I was contributing to the sentence http://artport.whitney.org/collection/DouglasDavis/live/writesentence.html#contribute

The sentences added are various, as it had been edited for a lot of time by Anonym. I contributed to the new version of the sentence that came to my mind when I was doing the research (screenshots above). I am now part of this collective artwork. So there is the question, who is the author of this online artwork? According to the essay, The Work of Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction (An Evolving Thesis: 1991-1995) by Douglas Davis, this is the first artwork that is multiple in authorship. It also has unconventional time-scales, since it can be edited anytime.

The free language learning platform
https://cdn.makeuseof.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Duolingo-logo-994×400.jpg

Another example of online collaboration project is called Duolingo, a free language learning platform with 200 million users. It seems to be an ordinary language learning app. However, collaboration is happening seamlessly. The users are actually translating the web while simultaneously learning a language. It extremely costly to employ professionals to translate the webpage, and computer translation is not accurate sometimes. Duolingo collects and combines the different versions of the translations to obtain the most accurate result. Translating English Wikipedia to Spanish would take only 80 hours with 1 million users. Moreover, this platform is free for both the users and web translation. Thus, this online collaboration seems to form a common thread among peers.

In reviewing the histories of artists and technologists engaged in open source ways of working and thinking in the digital age—despite the corporate influence of technology companies, social media, and big data—it appears there is a compelling path toward open, non-hierarchical approaches to peer-to-peer cultural production.

                                                                                                               – Randall Packer

All in all, The World’s First Collaborative Sentence and Duolingo do have something in common that they gathered the “puzzles” around the world to create the piece of work, which is probably impossible to achieve by an individual. It seems that the online collaborations are efficiently creating incredible artwork, and contributing to the human knowledge.

E-Connect

Screenshot of Adobe Connect Collaboration

I would like to give a name to this screenshot, e-connect. A lot of things in our daily life are going “e” (Electronic) because of technology. For example, e-mail, e-ticket, e-commerce and etc.. Technology improves the quality and efficiency of our lives. Today, we are able to connect with each other easily in the third space which the technology creates.

Last week, I had my e-connect experience in class. It was my first DIWO experience with Adobe Connect. We did several activities with each other, one example is making a cross on the screen as the photo above. We decided to make a cross with the guidance of our professor Randall Packer. A few minutes were taken for us to agree to do it, figure out how to achieve the effect, and tell each other “wait, don’t move! I need to take screenshots”.

Furthermore, we discussed our feelings in class, and received a word that worth million dollars from Randall Packer, “Negotiation”. It made me think about why negotiation is so important. It sounds like a big world yet it seems to be what we are using on the daily basis. It is simply looking for a deal that makes everyone happy. It is beneficial for us to master the skills of negotiation, as most of the artworks would involve more than one participants. For instance, art history group presentation. The first thing we do after forming a group is probably creating the WhatsApp group, where we can negotiate how we are going to contribute to the project in the third space. Good negotiation will give everyone a good group project experience and vice versa.

All in all, negotiation is essential as we are living in the society where it is almost impossible to avoid collaborations. Also, the existence of the third space had improved the quality of negotiation base on my experience in class and daily life.

The Mother of Facetime

On a November evening in 1980, a remarkable performance art, Hole in Space was held on the two sides the United States. Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz had their two life-sized screens installed at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and the department store at the open-air Shopping Center in Los Angeles. The audience at Los Angeles and New York City could see and speak to each other through satellite technologies. The audience was extremely excited to interact with people across the state. As it was not easy to travel 2789 miles (est. from east to west in the United States around the 1980s. Even now, it will take estimated 5 hours to travel from Los Angeles to New York City by air. Also, video call was only common for consumers in the early 2000s.

The travel distance between Los Angeles and New York City https://www.google.com.sg/maps/dir/New+York,+NY,+USA/Los+Angeles,+CA,+USA/@36.349707,-114.2788323,4z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x89c24fa5d33f083b:0xc80b8f06e177fe62!2m2!1d-74.0059728!2d40.7127753!1m5!1m1!1s0x80c2c75ddc27da13:0xe22fdf6f254608f4!2m2!1d-118.2436849!2d34.0522342

On the first day of the performance, the audience was unsure about what was going on with no instruction or signs were provided. They started to interact with strangers on the screen to clarify their thoughts. Interestingly, from 04:50 in the video above. We can see the change in audience’s body language that they moved closer to the screen. They were trying to imitate the physical interaction, and chatting casually with each other, although they might be complete strangers. A middle age male audience even questioned the interviewer if the people he saw on the screen are actors.

On the second day, the audience went to the installation to participate in the performance through the word of mouth. A male audience wearing sunglasses declared that he heard it from his friend. I think this performance art had encouraged the interaction beyond the performance to the certain extent. On the last day, most people decided to come after mass media announcement to meet their friends, family and loved ones, just like how we Facetime our friends nowadays. The reaction of the audience likely reached the climax of the whole performance. They were laughing, screaming, and shouting at each other. You can see the audience jumping and kneeling on the floor to express their excitement near the end of the video attached.

In my opinion, this performance art is a success, as it encouraged audience engagement. Where the audience were fully involved in this piece. The setting of the performance is the key to encourage people to be interested in participating.

“The sculpture gives form to a social space that is at once displaced and intimate. People are enthusiastic to make contact with others in a much more uninhibited manner than could be found in the normal urban environs of New York or LA.”

Firstly, there is no description and instruction which created curiosity among the audience. Secondly, the performance was held in the public space with its life-sized scale screen to attract attention. Lastly, it was able to create emotions, such as happiness and excitement when the parents saw their daughter on the screen (from 10:25 in the video). The artist’s’ role here is to create the space for the audience to participate in the performance instead of letting the audience watching the artists chatting using satellite technologies. Last but not least, this performance was probably erasing the geographical boundaries, and pulling people closer, even strangers through the “third place”.

SUMMARY

PHYSICAL SOURCES VS. ONLINE SOURCES
http://www.smead.com/images/product/n400/64096_W5.jpg
http://campbellpropertymanagement.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/Cloud.png

The tradition creation and production of art had transformed from physical space to cyberspace. The world we are living today is connected to the internet, and our lives are involved with all kinds of social interaction including art and education. This phenomenon could probably be traced back to the 1960s and 1970s when personal computers, networked computing and graphical user interface (GUI) were invented. The boundaries between art and science started blurring, due to the rapid development of the Internet. Artists and designers were able to artists and designers to collaborate globally. In the mid-1990s, open source studio (OSS) was first used cooperatively with browsers that are non-profited or with limited profit sharing.

NTU School of Art, Design, and Media Open Source Studio

Further, OSS has been used at NTU School of Art, Design, and Media after professor Randall Packer joined. This platform allows ADM students to share ideas, techniques, and aspirations. Students are no longer constrained by the physical arrangement of the classes. A project is not a singular task of individuals. Instead, this network encourages collaboration (DIWO) and experimentation. Students are free to appreciate, comment and share each other’s works.

However, OSS is facing the challenge of the current situation where some artworks are only exhibited with profit-driven organizations. Therefore, some artworks are only able to reach a limited amount of audience which is probably restricting the creativity and productivity. In addition, there is conflict between OSS and proprietary model. According to Richard Adkisson, the belief in high levels of intellectual-property might control over the creative process, as creator might not allow accessing certain sources legitimately for innovation.

All in all, open source studio is beneficial for the art and education. It is because it allows artist, student, and educators to share information and create collaboration opportunities in the cyberspace. However, the profit-driven market and proprietary model seem to go against OSS, as the result of limiting the creative process.

Micro-Project #2: Tele-Stroll – ALOE YOU VERA MUCH

Posted by Daphne Natimin on Tuesday, 23 January 2018

OVERVIEW

Daphne and I decided to create the live broadcast of us getting ready for school in the morning, as both of us experienced long-distance friendships. We always eat with friends through video call or co-broadcasting. Sometimes, we will just leave the broadcast on and do our own work without talking. Thus, for this project, we planned to do our daily makeup together in the “third place”, just like how we usually dress up together in the physical world.

PROCESS

We set the time to wake up at the same time in the morning and followed the makeup steps that we planned out. The instructions sheet was placed near us and outside of the frame. The skincare and makeup products were opened and laid on the table in advance. Since we only had one hand to do our makeup and another hand was holding the phone.  We also planned to let one person lead the movement to make our video more synchronized.

REFLECTION

Lastly, I realized that we can actually communicate with each other through eye contact and lip language after watching the recorded live video. The physical distance did not affect how well we can understand each other with the help of FaceBook live platform.

Micro Project #1: Experiment in Social Broadcasting

Hi I'm ART

Posted by Bella Dai on Thursday, 18 January 2018

It is interesting how the Internet can bring everyone into the third place, where we can share what we experienced in the 15 minutes at the same location on the little screens. In the past 15 minutes, I tried to interact with people who are watching the live broadcast although I might not know them. Also, I started talking to people around me and sharing them on my live broadcast.

FOUNDATION 4D PROJECT 4: POETICS OF TIME

PROJECT BRIEF

Choose a specific location in ADM, and create an encounter with any medium that expresses one of the following categories of time. 1. Measured time 2. Experienced time 3. Edited time 4. Biological time.

OVERVIEW

I started this project with research on two artists, Tehching Hsieh and Marina Abramovic who are the pioneers of performance art. I decided to have a performance art for this project after having a better understanding of it. Due to time constraints, my performance was recorded and presented in the form of installation. The purpose of this performance is to cause realization of the current issues. INDIVIDUALISATION

PROJECT PROPOSAL

PROJECT 4 PROPOSAL

PROCESS

I had 21 meals alone for 15 days, as I skipped some and there were technical issues for a few meals that were not recorded. All the video clips were edited to the similar scales to keep the consistency. The edited video was presented in the installation is 2 hours 11 minutes in clock time.

There is a speed up version of part of the original video. The scale and framing are able to capture my movement and the environment. There is no surprise in this artwork as all my movements are similar. The regular movement suggests my oppressive emotion, and also form a contrast to the irregular movement in the background. The contrast of an individual against the group emphasized my loneliness.

TRIAD COLOURS http://www.tigercolor.com/Images/Triad.gif

Moreover, the deliverable of this project is an installation of my recorded performance. I created a dining environment for my audience to experience the artwork. The images above are my references. The style of the dining environment is colourful and bright like where a group of friends normal hang out at. I used two orange, two green chairs, and one white table for my installation to achieve the ideal effect. I chose the colours according to colour theory that triad colour which are green, violet and orange to create the playful environment.

Further, text is used in my installation to clarify the content and emphasize my emotion. I wrote down my feeling after every meal and consolidate those into a menu-like sheet with the performance art title and other information. It was placed on the white table for the audience to read while they are watching the video. Some small notes were also placed on the table to deliver my message to the audience.

FINAL INSTALLATION

INSTALLATION SET UP
INSTALLATION SET UP

The installation lasted for 2 hours and 11 minutes started from 1230pm on 20th November 2017 at ADM level 2 outside 2D studio. I invited my friend for lunch at my installation. That was my first time eating with friends in 15 days. My friends and classmates had pizza with me and also shared their opinions with me. The whole installation was recorded by Gopro. There is a five-minute video  of some moment above as I could not be able to upload the whole 2 hours video.

ALL IN ALL

SOCIAL EVENT
SOCIAL EVENT

This is the first time that I am having performance art and installation. I was always curious about those in the past. Finally, there was a chance for me to do so. Eating alone seems to be an easy task but it is difficult for me as I am an extrovert person who loves to socialize. I am also self-conscious that I care about how people think of me. Putting myself in the situation without company in the public is torture. I felt insecure when I was eating alone. In addition, I did not expect that this performance art would affect my social life that much. I missed several chances to enjoy great food with friends because I need to follow the rules I set. Actually, I only spent around 2 hours in total eating alone but I felt like the time was double. It is because those experiences are unpleasant. However, I felt that time past faster when I was sharing food with friends at the installation. This project is interesting that I never think about time in depth as it is just something we experience every day. I appreciate that we actually have the ability to design time. Lastly, I think this project also helped me to discover my potential, and decide my major.

PROJECT 3: EGO IN DIFFERENT SETTINGS

PROJECT BRIEF

Every person reacts differently to different settings. In four rows of three squares, create a self-portrait based on four different settings. For each of the four rows, use the first column to represent yourself and the second column to represent a setting and the third column to represent an imagined outcome.  Apply your understanding of colours and colour theory to visually represent the multifaceted nature of your personality. You may choose to do this digitally or by hand (or mix-media). There are a total of 12 image compositions. Each individual composition measure 200mm x 200mm (square) with a 20mm x 200mm space for text.

OVERVIEW

PERSONALITY RESULT FROM https://www.16personalities.com/.

I started this project by looking at my personality based on a personality test that I think is the most accurate. My test result is the ENTJ PERSONALITY (“THE COMMANDER”), and I used the four categories, such as career paths, family value, romantic relationship and friendship of my personality analysis as the concepts of my equations.

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people’s thinking. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.             – Steve Jobs

According to research, Steve Jobs is also with ENTJ personality. People with this type of personality are determined, confident and forceful. Thus, red is the dominant colour in my equations to represent energy and passion.

1ST EQUATION

DIGITAL ARTWORK
CONCEPT

My first equation is about my career paths. My personality makes me suitable to be the leader in the organization. I chose lion to represent myself, as lion symbolizes strength and leadership. My setting here is my school ADM. It is where I am preparing for my future career. My response to my personality is a pineapple, as it a love and hate fruit. It tastes great at first but gives the numb feeling on the tongue after eating too much of it. I am passionate about what I am doing but sometimes it torturing when I am stuck on some projects.

INSPIRATION
POP ART

I was inspired by the vibrant colours of pop art and its simple composition.

COLOR THEORY

I decided to use complementary colours for my personality and setting as it represents conflict which is my love and hates towards my career paths. The first set of complementary colours are violet and yellow, while the second are red and green. I used red-violet, which is the hue in between violet and red to be the background of the response. I used yellow and green again in the response to form split-complimentary colour.

DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES
ME: EGO
SETTING: ADM
RESPONSE: LOVE & HATE

In this equation, I used the symmetrical balance to achieve harmony. Symmetrical balance also shows the sense of order and clarity which is my attitude toward my career paths.

2ND EQUATION

DIGITAL ARTWORK
CONCEPT

The third equation is about my relationship with my family. I was born during the one-child policy period in China that each couple could only have one child. Therefore, I am the only child in the family with all the attention from my parents. However, I started living overseas away from my family since 15 years old. I am living in Asia but the western culture influenced me for years. Thus, the response is my confusion of my cultural identity, and also my homesickness

INSPIRATION
FLAT LAY PHOTOGRAPHY

I was inspired by the flat lay photography that is trendy on social media. I search for the existing product, edit them accordingly, and arranged them into the plat lay.

COLOR THEORY

I used monochromatic colour scheme. I picked yellow and red from the National flag of China for my personality and the setting. The colour of the response is blue which represent my sadness. Those three colours form triad colour that is lively and harmonious.

DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES
ME: ONE CHILD POLICY
SETTING: MADE IN CHINA
RESPONSE: HOMESICK MIANBAO

For the first composition, I used elements with curvy lines to form the shape of a baby which also contain curvy lines to achieve unity. The decomposition contains more shapes like rectangles and squares that create unity although there is quite a number of different objects. Lastly, the bread is dominant in the composition while the plate and chopstick are the subdominant and subordinate. The focal point is the bread as it is the main character in the story, and the tableware is here to create contrast.

3RD EQUATION

MIX MEDIUM ARTWORK
CONCEPT

The 3rd equation is about my romantic relationship. People with the ENTJ personality type like to be the leading roles in relationships. I approach a relationship with a set of goals and plans. My ideal type of relationship is fall of creativity and energy. However, the reality is cold enough the chill my bones. It is difficult to find a partner who shares the similar value. I feel lost and confuse when I am facing the single me with my pride and high expectation.

INSPIRATION

I always like to explore new things so I decided to do mix media for this equation. One media is makeup, and another is photography. I was inspired by a  Chinese visual artist, Chen Man. One series of her artworks gave me the idea of using makeup as the media. The colours are pure and vibrant in this series.

COLOR THEORY

EYESHADOW PALETTE
ANALOGOUS COLOURS
PROCESS

I chose analogous colours for this equation. Red is used as the dominant in the first composition while red-orange and orange compliment it. The warm colour here represents my energy in my ideal relationship. Moreover, I used cool colours for the setting which are green, blue-green and blue. Those three colours are opposite red, red-orange, and orange that from the contrast between idealism and realism.

DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES
ME: DIVA
SETTING: COLD ENOUGH TO CHILL MY BONES
RESPONSE: LOST

The first composition is shot at the low angle which shows the power of the character. The second composition is an extreme close-up to capture the emotion. The last composition is underexposed to show the darkness. My face is covered with my hair, and it seems like I had lost my vision and hope.

4TH EQUATION

TRADITIONAL ARTWORK
CONCEPT

The last equation is about friendship. I used traditional medium, such as watercolour pencil and watercolour paper and some other tools like blender and cotton pad. Friends are very important for me as they are the closest while my family is so far away. I received a lot of help from my friends along the way. My friends and I are the types of person who work hard like trash but also play hard sometimes. We are all spontaneous and do not think about consequences sometimes. Therefore, I used toilet paper to represent ourselves. The toilet bowl is our setting, as we always do ‘shit’ together. The response is a pregnancy test with two lines which means the test result is positive. unplanned pregnancy emphasized how spontaneous and playful my friends and I are. Lastly, the objects I used in this equation are normally in white, which shows that how friendship makes my life more colourful and lively.

INSPIRATION

I was inspired by an artist called Nicolas Party. He is famous for using saturated colour in his painting. I like the way he composites the object in a simple way. Each of the object is in monochrome.

COLOR THEORY

COLOUR TESTING

I chose analogous colours for my last equation as it is the most harmonious colour combinations represent the good friendship that I have. The first composition is in red, red violet and violet. The red colour here represent the energy my friends and i have. The second composition is in green, yellow-green and yellow. As green is directly opposite red which form a strong contrast in this equation. The response is in complimentary colours to form contrast.

DESIGN ELEMENTS & PRINCIPLES

The scale of the objects increase from the first composition to the last composition to gradually draw the viewer’s attention, and trigger their curiosity. As the objects become less clear when the scale increase.

ALL IN ALL

This project helps me with a better understanding of colour theory and also myself. It is challenging as I do not use many colours in my own work. I had a good time exploring different technique and other artworks. I received constructive feedback from my professors and friends along the way. I think I will pay more attention to the usage of colours in the future projects.
