Project 1: Picture Story – Curating Self

FullSizeRender

When tasked to introduce myself using pictures, I only thought of telling things that people wouldn’t usually notice about me or things that people can’t tell only by looking at my appearance. Hence, I kind of centered the idea around the trait of me being a traditional person and someone who is relatively obsessed with patterns.

For the first series, I gave my photos a little bit of a green tint to add vintage vibes to it and hopefully giving the audience a feel of the olden days.

For this photo, the patterns engraved on the entrance gate of the temple immediately caught my eye and also explains my love for patterns as well. Another element of this photo is the chinese word for phoenix, which in the chinese context means female.

This photo depicts me standing behind the window. My whole idea of this is that I want to show that I am personally someone who appreciates having a private and enclosed life. Apparently, this is still a flaw I’m working on – to step out of my comfort zone.

Another photo which explains my love for patterns again. I have always felt that flowers or fauna is a symbol of a soft image and being feminine. I would like to say that despite the general impression of me being someone who looks cold and unfriendly, I can be a warm person too.

As for this series of introducing an object of a large significance in my life, I chose my boots which I’ve worn during the whole of 2 years in JC for my CCA, Touch Rugby. The 3 photos are an imitation of how it’s like for every training.

After the sun had set, this signifies the end of training.

The last series would be to show a place of significance – Home. When I was producing this series I thought of Nan Goldin. I like her style of photos which portrayed very genuine sides of her background and her friends. In her photos, many of them have a vignette effect and I thought it gave a feeling like we were having a “sneak peek” into her life. So I thought of trying it out too in my photos.

Staying in a HDB flat, this is the corridor I have to walk past ever since young to reach the door step shown at the background of the picture. Although this is merely just a walkway, this is still a short route to take regardless of how I’m feeling in different phases of my life, from being a carefree individual when I was 5 to someone who feels so much uncertainty at times. Furthermore, this is also the place which embodies memories when I used to be close with my neighbours.

And since I’m on the topic of home, I feel I ought to introduce my family by casting them in this picture. This photo also shows my Mom’s obsession with the whole Zen concept that she was enthusiastic about years ago from the antique clock and wooden photo frames.

This photo was actually taken by the balcony which is the place I am always at whenever I need a rest or to think. It is also generally a place where my family gathers.
