Thoughts on [Goal-Directed Product and Service Design]

Design vs Art

Definition of Design by Kim Goodwin (For the context of his book):

… is the craft of visualising concrete solutions that serve human needs and goals within certain constraints.

Is Art inherently political? Social Practice Art

Critique on Social Practice Art
Personally, Art has always been a reflection of the world and its society. No matter how whacky or abstract the art is, it always expresses the creator’s state of mind/being.

My name is Daryl and I am an experience designer…

Bio:
Currently pursuing a degree in Nanyang Technological University’s Arts, Design & Media programme, I aspire to be an individual and an artist that can inspire change in people and the world. To be an Experience designer, I focus on producing quality & culturally relevant products, processes, services, events, omni-channel journeys, and environments. With a cross-discipline perspective, I consider multiple aspects of a brand or business from their product, packaging, environment to standards of service. A well designed experience will support and influences human behaviour through usability, accessibility, desirability, usefulness and impact.

Speculative/Provotype Sketch: Little iSole

Innovated by designers Chris Barnes and others at Cambridge Consultants of Cambridge, ‘Little I’ empowers parents in low resource countries to monitor the health of their newborns by providing a low-cost, durable device that gives them assurance of their newborn’s survival despite lack of medical knowledge. 28 days after the birth, the device is returned which is then cleaned and recharged to be used by the next newborn.

LedRoom Sketch – Drawing boundaries

Project done by: Sylvia, Daryl, Wei Lin, Wan Hui

After coming up with the sketches and putting them in Processing, we were then tasked with connecting it to Arduino. We settled with 4 main functions with different triggers.

  • On/Off – Proximity Sensor
  • Brightness – Volume (Microphone level)
  • Colour Change & Patterning – Compass + Gravity
  • Preset Colour Patterns – Touch 2D + Wekinator

Colour Change + Pattern

Essentially, I wanted to use the compass to draw a circle, using the gestures to change the colours while “colouring” the circle. I made use of the Gravity, Quaternion and Compass sensors from ZigSim, linking it through Processing to Arduino. From Processing, the data received from ZigSim is communicated to Arduino and translated to colour codes and number patterning for the Adafruit LED Strip.
