2D | Project 2 : Forrest Gump [Final]

This post marks the end of Project 2 – Forrest Gump!

Hallelujah, I’m so glad that it’s over judging by how much I struggled in trying  to interpret the quote and coming up with a composition that accurately represents my interpretation.

In this post, I’ll include the

  • Background information of the movie (quote)
  • Ideation
  • Process
  • Final design

for the individual quotes.

For most of my design compositions, I took the quote out of the movie context and illustrated it in the most literal manner. After trying out the different styles, I figured that this was style that suited me the most.

Design Composition (1) :

Background Information:

                 How much is my cut?
                  - Bad Genius (2017)

Ideation:

Process:

How I went about illustrating was to incorporate 4 different elements:

Elements: Explanation:
Heart The heart is the center of our emotions, feelings and thoughts. It is used to illustrate the pain that is felt from the cut.
Scissors A scissors consist of two blades that allows it to create a cut. It is used to illustrate the cut on the heart.
Dollar Bills The dollar bills are denominations of the United States currency (apt. to the movie context). It is used to illustrate the monetary value of the cut.
Noose The noose is a loop with a running knot. It is used to illustrate how the heart is incapable of holding itself together (from the cut), hence it has to rely on the noose to keep it together.  Also, it creates a balance to the composition as the focus is primarily on the right side.

Other design compositions that I worked on:

Design (1) was what I started on till the idea of bleeding dollar bills hit me.

Design (2) was when I incorporated the idea of bleeding dollar bills. Using this design, I consulted Joy and she gave me constructive feedbacks on how I could improve the overall composition.

  • Reducing the number of scissors to maximum 3, to create a balance as the right side of the composition is comparatively heavier on elements as compared to the left side.
  • Adding a noose on the left side to create an overall balance to the composition.

Design Composition (2) :

Background Information:

It's like picking your breakfast cereal based on color
                  instead of taste.
                  - Paper Towns (2015)

Ideation:

Process:

How I went about illustrating was to incorporate 5 different elements:

Elements:   Explanation:
Breakfast Tray The breakfast tray is flat and shallow container with a raised rim, used to carry food, in this case, breakfast cereal. It is used to illustrate difference in weight of the measuring beaker containing the cereals, supported by a noose on the two ends.
Cereals Cereals are a common choice of food for breakfast. It is used to illustrate the meaning of the quote (looks and depth).
Measuring Beaker A measuring beaker is a glass container with measurement markings on the beaker. It is used to illustrate the depth of the cereals (i.e. how much cereal is contained in the beaker).
Jug of Milk The jug of milk is used to further illustrate the ‘looks’ of the cereal, where it looks much more desirable compared to the other beaker of cereal.
Dried Baby Breaths The stalk of dried baby breaths are used to further illustrate the ‘looks’ of the cereal, where it looks much more desirable compared to the other beaker of cereal.

This particular composition was a challenge as the quote itself, conveyed a deeper meaning if it is not interpreted in a literal manner.

The amount of cereals in the measuring beaker are vastly different to illustrate the ‘depth’ in the quote.

The beaker is filled with cereal to the brim but not adorned with any decoration illustrates depth but no looks. The beaker is filled with lesser cereal but adorned with a stalk of dried baby breath and a jug of milk illustrates looks but no depth.

Design Composition (3) :

Background Information:

       What's your favourite flower? Dandelions.
                    - I Origins (2014)

Ideation:

Process:

How I went about illustrating was to incorporate 3 different elements:

Elements: Explanation:
Tabletop Globe A tabletop globe is a three dimensional, spherical, scale model of the world. It is used to illustrate how dandelions meant the entire world to the protagonist in the movie context.
Dandelions (Taraxacum) Taraxacum is a large genus of flowering plants in the family Asteraceae which consists of species such as dandelion. By placing the Taraxacum on the right side, it is used to illustrate the gradual maturity of the Taraxacum from a flower head to a blow ball.
Dandelions (Blow-balls)  (Cont’d) The blowballs contains many single-seeded fruits, namely achenes. Each achene is attached to a pappus of fine hairs which enable wind-aided dispersal over long distances.

Keeping in mind of the triangle technique that Joy mentioned during  the consultation, where there is harmony among the different elements while maintaining a balance in the overall design composition.

We'll have you washed & dried.
                     - Mulan (1998)

Ideation:

Process:

How I went about illustrating was to incorporate 6 different elements:

Elements: Explanation:
Watering Can A watering can is a portable container filled with water, to water plants by hand. It is used to illustrate Mulan being washed with the water pouring out of the watering can onto her.
Mulan Mulan, is the protagonist of the film. Naturally, she is placed in the middle as the main focus of the composition with the different elements surrounding her.
Towel A towel is a piece of thick absorbent cloth used to dry oneself from any liquid. It is used to illustrate how Mulan is keeping herself dry from the water that’s pouring onto her.
Laundry Rack A laundry rack is a frame upon which clothes are hung after washing, to dry by evaporation. It is used to illustrate how Mulan is being dried by evaporation by placing her on the laundry rack.
Puddles of Water The puddles of water are used to illustrate the process of Mulan being dried where excess water would drip down to form a puddle of water.
Fish The fish is used to illustrate the depth of the puddle of water that’s being dripped down from Mulan whereby a fish can be contained in it.

Keeping in mind of the triangle technique (this time round, I played with 2 triangles) to create harmony within the different elements, maintaining an overall balance in the design composition.

Final Design:

In a nutshell, I enjoyed the overall experience in completing project 2 where despite having troubles coming up with the designs, I had fun exploring the different styles and of course, finally learning how to use Photoshop because I never really had a chance to.

Thank you for reading!
