Image Making Through Type Research

So for this project we are tasked with illustrating our name (nickname, initials, surname, etc) in a way that would describe our future job.

When I think of future jobs, I mostly think of artsy things like fashion, working in a museum, and making toys. However, that would make the scope rather narrow, so I branches into other fields and thought of how I would like to portray myself in an aesthetic manner. Hence i came up with being a magician or circus performer and a pattissier, which I felt had a more whimsical touch to it.

Toy maker

When searching ‘toy maker’, most of the search results show images of wooden toy makers.

Th source above is about Venezuelan folk artist Mario Calderón and features the toys that he makes. They are mostly humanoid beings painted in bright highly saturated colours. His theme for his tys is a relflection of childhood, and has a very fun and whimsical aesthetic.

(Both sources were taken from: https://www.folkartmarket.org/artist/mario-calderon/) The above are just some of the examples of Mario Calderón’s work.

In this case i would have my illustrate the workshop and the process of the toys created.

However, I felt that there are many example of toys (Stuffed toys, collectibles, dolls, board games) hence maybe I would like to dive further into what kind of toys I would like to ‘make in future’.

(source taken from: Pixar Animation Studio’s Toy Story 2 (1999))

I remembered this scene in Toy story where Woody had to have his arm reattached, and I thought of how interesting the tool box full of doll touch up parts were.

I also watched some Youtubers who make custom dolls.

(Source was screen shot from Youtuber Dollightful’s video ‘ Your First Custom: Selection + Preparation [Part 1]’ at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fen8kUQHfjE)

(Source was screen shot from Youtuber Dollightful’s video ‘ Sewing Doll clothes tutorial Part 1’ at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdUviy9uYpk)

Her videos provide the process of customizing your own dolls.

Subsequently, there was another aspect of the finish products that I could portray, with the toys kept neatly in the shelves like a toy seller instead.

Fashion designer

So as a fashion designer, there are a few stages in designing, first being ideation in the form of sketches, second is the gathering of materials, third being production of the clothing and lastly the runway.

(source take from: http://www.loveandotherbugs.com/fashion/decoding-fashion-terms/)

I want to illustrate the process of producing the clothes, and maybe incorporate parts that suggest ideation and material gathering. Which also means that I would have to research clothes designs.

Curator

So I had the idea of being a Curator as i like the idea of this large collection of things.

(Source taken from: https://broadway.showtickets.com/new-york-tours-attractions/american-museum-of-natural-history-new-york/)

I visited the National History Museum in New York a few years ago and was drawn instantly to how they curated their large collection of taxidermy and fossils. Its almost as if visiting the zoo as seen by the above picture where the ‘animals’ could be seen in the ‘natural habitat’.

I hope that this would not become too detailed to the point that it would become a narrative.

Magician or Circus Performer

In the case of a magician, i would be illustrating certain props that magicians use.

(Source is taken from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hat-trick_(magic_trick))

However, thinking about it, I find that only using the props of magicians might be a bit narrow, hence widen the scope to more of circus acts.

(Source was taken from: http://mypieceofculture.tumblr.com/post/159451338879/witch-aesthetics-circus-witch-chaos-witch)

The only problem i had with this was that it may be a bit too narrative.

Patissier

I like sweets, they come in many forms, many colours. I specifically like walking into those high end bakeries to stare at the sweets.

For this illustration, i am considering between having it illustrate the process of making a cake vs having and illustration of a store front.

In the case of the former, i would be referencing more on the tools and the processes used to make the cake like the above pictures. Hence maybe only one letter in my name will be a pastry and the rest will be tools, emphasizing on the fact that it has just been completed.

Subsequently, I could also have a store front to show the cakes that I have ‘made’. In that case, i would be studying the various kinds of gourmet desserts and how they will become the letters of my name.

However this may come across more of a cake seller rather then a patissier.

Week 3 Essay

Hello World! Or: How I Learned to Stop Listening and Love the Noise

Artwork title: Hello World! or: How I Learned to Stop Listening and Love the Noise

Artist: Christopher Baker

Medium: Multi-channel multimedia installation

Year created: 2008

The Review

Hello world is a video installation where 5,000 video diaries of various individuals are played along a wall. The people in the videos can be seen speaking in their rooms, kitchens, a space of comfort.

Walking into the gallery space, one is instantly immersed in layers of voices, overlapping to the point that the words blend and become noise. It is as though you are listening to them talk about something intimate, nd at the same time, their personal issues are made public. You hear everything but at the same time you hear nothing in a sea of voices.

His works is a visual representation of the modern lifestyle of being constantly interconnected despite being far apart.

The concept is similar to that mentioned in Randall Packer’s writing ‘The Third Space’ in regards to the art work ‘Hole in Space’. He mentions the idea of a ‘third space’ being created, or a virtual identity being transimitted from one party to another through technology.

Image result for hole in space art

(source taken from: http://www.medienkunstnetz.de/works/hole-in-space/)

In this case the works differ in the the sense that ‘Hole in Space’ is a live broadcast, which is ephemeral, it is ever changing depending on the people and how they interact. On the other hand, ‘Hello World!’ is a collection of pre-recorded videos, hence the interaction becomes one-way. That means that there would be a distinctive lack of communication between the people whose videos are put up.

When we were in class, we talk about how communication is important when working as a collective whole to make a work cohesive. So it is amazing to see the images contrast with each despite the lack negotiation.

Telematic Embrace, Together but Not

Mirco-Project 3

The review

During lesson, our class went through what was coined the ‘telematic embrace’.

During the lesson we held a online conference on Adobe Connect. Then we were asked to do a few tasks in front of our web cams. From where we sat, we could all see most of our classmates undergo each task rather differently, resulting in a wall of rather interesting imagery.

(Source was an image shared by our proffessor Randall Packer)

The task above was to share a photo we have on our phone. Through this exchange, we are able to learn alot about our own classmate. The photos we have on our phone says alot about who we are personally. In a situation where they are placed next to each other it is a playful contrast of of our personalities, despite sharing the same major.

(Source was an image shared by our proffessor Randall Packer)

The task above was to place our clear water bottles over the screen to create and interesting effect. Despite being quite easy to create, to achieve such a synchronised collaborative art work, one must be willing to cooperate and negotiate. In each photo that we have contributed to, it is only due to our willingness to follow the instructions given to us that we are able to create a cohesive combined image.

The conclusion

This idea of ‘Do-It-With-Others’ would have rather unpredictable results despite the contributers having the same set of instructions. It makes the outcome of the works surprising and unique as various ideas contrast and complement each other.

A guide to Intimacy for Asexuals

Title: The Big Kiss

Artist: Annie Abrahams

Medium: Webcam performance installation art

Year: 2008

The Review

On October 10 2008, Annie Abrahams set up a live video shoot of her and Mark River sitting on opposite ends of a partition, simulating a kiss over a split video screen.

(Source is a screen shot from: https://vimeo.com/2070207)

From the image we can see the two artists manuvering their faces in front of the camera while looking towards the screen to see if their faces were match up forming a ‘kiss’. The live video consist of the both of them sticking their tongues out and pressing kisses againgst each other as though they are making out with each other physically.

According to the website thirdspacenetwork, Abrahams’ works explores the ‘intimacy’ and even ‘sexuality’ of humans ‘in the “telematic embrace”‘ which is the internet, and the idea of ‘being alone but together’. It draws parallels to how the millenials of the 21st century have used their technology like snapchat, skype, etc to have real time conversations with each other despite being in different locations. It is almost as if conversing with an object and not an actual person.

As mentioned by Randall Parker in his writing ‘the third space’, people can assume their internet identities in a ‘reinvented world of their choosing’. They can take walks with each other, converse with each other, initate acts of intimacy, etc without actually touching. It becomes this invisible barrier between two people that keep them apart, but still together at the same time. As a result, this ‘portal’ which allows us to see each other in different locations has the potential to become surreal or fantasy like because it does not show the ‘utimate truth’.

If we cross reference this work, with Nam June Paik’s ‘Egg Grows’ we can see a similarity with this idea of the third space being ‘decieving’.

Image result for egg grows nam june paik (Source taken from: http://kmccarth.umwblogs.org/2015/01/26/nam-june-paik/)

From above we see an egg being broadcasted in real time ov various Tvs placed in different positions and of different sizes. As a result the images of the egg become distorted to fit the TV screens, making them bigger then usual, or positioned weirdly.

In conclusion this becomes an alternate reality that conincides with the actual reality we exist in, however, it has far more potential to be manipulated into something that we want to see of want others to see.

Week 1 Assignment

‘Open source as a Culture’ by Siva Vaidhyanathan highlights the positive effects of Open Studio, however the essay also focuses on the negative. Open Studio Practice ‘increases the creativity’ with idea sharing. However it also results in the issues of Copyright and increase in online hackers. The creation of the internet results in increased accessibility to ideas, images, information etc, it has been easier to steal them as well.

Image result for hakers

(source taken from: http://geekmexico.com/blog/hakers-genios-sin-merito/)

This leads many large companies like micro-soft, as mentioned in the essay, to protect their intellectual property with copyrights and trademarking.

On the other hand, ‘Open Source Studio’ by Randall Parker discuss several ideas regarding the evolution in the Art world with the birth of technology.

The first being the interconnectivity brought by the internet. With the creation of the web what has traditionally been isolated, for example the artist studio space, portfolios, etc, can be communicated to a global scale. Many people have taken to the internet to voice through social media (eg; facebook, Twitter), online forums have been created to share information with the communitty creating discussions without the need to congregate. Similarly, Open Source Studios takes advantage of the connectivity brought by the internet and becomes an online sharing platform that showcases artworks of various medias to a international audience.

Secondly, the essay references Siva Vaidhyanathan’s ‘Open Source as a Culture’, which once again brings across the dilemma that follows open space practices, copyright.

Finally, the essay also highlights the works of artists that have embraced the idea of Open studio Practice. DIWO or do it with others is a concept that encourage sharing of ideas or Audience interaction.

Ego in Different Setting Process

First I roughly sketched out a few ideas I had in mind in my sketchbook.

(First Box: I guessed I am described as a Chinchilla, I am hyperactive and bounce around a lot.

Second Box: I’m kind of the person that wants to interact with others.

Third Box: But that is kind of when I realize that I’m more of a hermit crab.)

(First Box: There comes a time in every Chinchillas life where they have to answer a text message from an important person.

Second Box: Sending the message is hard work, with a long tiresome vetting process.

Third box: However, receiving the message is far more tiring and frightening for the fragile Chinchilla.)

(First Box: As a Chinchilla you are expected to be a highly active person with many things pile on your plate.

Second Box: But you are not God so it is expected that you would burn out.

2.5 box is the edited image of the scenario supposed to be seen in the second Box.

Third Box: Maybe its time to recharge.

Fourth box is the edited version of the third Box.)

(First Box: As a Cockatoo, I’m a creative birdie that knows how to paint.

Second Box: I create works of art that many people admire and they always ask, “What do they mean?”

Third Box: I rather them believe that the things I do is more innocent than it is.)

(First box: As a cat it is your responsibility to sleep in day in and day out.

Second Box: But sometimes you need to wake up and face the real world.

Third Box: …Nah, maybe in five minutes, or a day…)

(First Box: As a flower I am sweet and innocent, something pretty to see.

Second Box: When facing something scary, there is only two things I can advice you do. The first being ignore it and maybe it will go away.

Third Box: The second is to become more scary than the thing threatening you.

Fourth Box is an edit on the perspective of Box 2.)

(First Box: If I were a tiny Hot Wheels Car.

Second Box: I would stare out my window.

Third Box: And wonder why that hunk of a car does not notice me?)

(Here are the edits for the Hot Wheels panel and the cat panel)

The story line for them were fine, but the perspective that I put them in, in the various scenarios were not too well done, so i sketched out and edited a few panels.

In the end I picked these four.

I  went online to see what styles I wanted to portray them in.

I kind of already had an ink and wash idea in my head, sort of illustrative style that is more realistic.

(the above is the works of Kelly Murphy and Karen Haley respectively, I hoped to use this for the Chinchilla and the Cat illustration.)

Subsequently I wanted a sort of comic book style for my fourth panel as it references the transformers comics, but instead I went a semi-realistic, less graphical rendering.

I was referencing Henri Matisse (the first picture) more than Helena Wierzbicki (The second picture) as her work was a bit too colourful.

I like the colours patchy, it suited me more then the smooth blended techniques, and in this case it gives it a bit more edgy feeling to it, a bit more action-like.

The Last style i was referencing was the movie Antz (1998). It had this scene where the ants interacted with humans, and I remembered how foreign looking the humans were to the ants. I wanted to imitate that sort of imagery.

The sort of picture like quality where the humans come from the sky and the plants are down to earth.

So for the first two panels I went ahead and started to ink and wash my illustrations. They came out rather desaturated, so i scanned them in and upped the saturation and contrast.

Some edits were a bit more drastic then others, like changing the cool tones to warm, but I felt that the composition would have looked better in the warm tones then the cooler ones.

Next I went to photograph some flowers at Gardens by the Bay. I needed two flowers one opened and one a closed bud, yet they both have to have the same amount of mass to seem as though the flower was chomping down on it. I finally managed to find two flowers with similar backgrounds and masses to make it seem that they are the same.

Then I edited it to make a foggy back ground and some other ‘special effects’.

Lastly I drew the Hot Wheels toy car on Photoshop.

Hence resulting in this final.

The Chinchilla and the crossroads reflects my everyday mentality of prioritizing what has to be done, something that is relatable to many. The panel was originally a mix of complimentary colours orange, browns and blues. However, it became slightly more monochromatic as I felt it gave the composition a bit more tension, and it is draining/gives the feelings of dread and frustration when looking at it, which was what was supposed to be conveyed.

The cat represents this idea of laziness/love for sleep that I have. This panel was done in a monochromatic scale intentionally, to show a sort of simplicity in the nature of sleep. The first and last box were done in warm and bright colours, to create a more positive mood, associated with the desire for sleep. The second box is blue, like Monday blues.

The idea of the flower, kind of represents this ‘weirdness’ that kind of reflects what I am. I was told in Junior College that my humor is dark and hits when everyone least expects it. The panels are three photos that I took and digitally manipulated. I blurred out the backgrounds for the first and last picture, in attempts to make it look the same (Honestly, they were both green, so it did not make much difference after the blurring). Subsequently I added in a picture of my finger and dabbed on some ‘blood’ onto the flower petals (I’m glad this part turned out realistic, if not it would have clashed with the photo). This two were largely make use of the colour green, which brings me to my second panel which uses more blues and pink. The change in colour, gives the second image a sort of ‘foreign’ feel, hence making the human an intruding presence.

This last idea about the Hot Wheels car is a metaphor for my idealistic personality. The way I aim high, but it is out of my league/out of my reach (simply because it does not exist), and sometimes a bit more fantastical. Hence, I wanted to use colours that are a bit more dream-like and unnatural, hence the pastel palette.

2D Project 2

For this project i chose the following quotes:

  1. “Dishonour on you! Dishonour on your cow!” — Mulan (1998)
  2. “He touched the butt” — Finding Nemo (2003)
  3. “Oh Good my dog found the chainsaw” — Lilo and Stitch (2002)
  4. “This is my family. I found it all on my own. Its little and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good.” — Lilo and Stitch (2002)

“Dishonour on you! Dishonour on your cow!” — Mulan (1998)

For this quote, I illustrated the picture based on the key words “Dishonour”, “You” and “Cow”

“Dishonour”, I relate to death, bad omens and things related to fortune, hence I hose black cats and skulls, and grim reapers.

“You” I relate to humans, human skulls, fingers anything somewhat accusatory.

“Cow” is literally represented with images of cows or horse or animal skulls.

I liked the design and decided to play around with the scale, half tone, threshold and came up with variations of the one composition. Though I still like the design without the colour halftone.

“He touched the butt” — Finding Nemo (2003)

For this quote I split the  Illustration the into the key words “He”, “Touched” and “Butt”.

“He” refers to a male, or humans in general. Hence for “He” i thought of icons that are often associated to man like a mustache or literally the male gender symbol.

“Touched” I had wanted to use the mouse arrow symbol, the clicking symbol or the more literal sense of touch as in hands.

“Butt” there are two meanings to this word, so at first I found peaches to visually show a butt, or animal butts like cats and dogs. However the more i searched, I realised that it is easier to illustrate with images of “jerks” instead. Hence I have a chose images of Cats and Donkeys ( also known as a Jackass).

The idea was rather literal I find, and a bit to simple and symmetrical. The comments I got was it was too ‘quiet’ so it was eventually rejected.

“Oh Good my dog found the chainsaw” — Lilo and Stitch (2002)

The keywords for this illustration is “Good”, “Dog”, “Found” and “Chainsaw”.

“Good” was hard to illustrate, but i eventually decided on using elements of good luck. Examples of which are clovers, horseshoes, rabbit feet and dream catchers.

“Dogs” are literally represented as dogs for me.

“Found” I wanted to represent as sight, or magnifying glass. There was also a thought of creating a trail, to show the process of being found instead of actually being found.

“Chainsaw” was initially just a chainsaw, but then I felt that it was too literal, hence i broke the word into two, “Chain” and “saw” so images of chains and eyes.

The although I liked the idea of the first two, the comments  got for them both were that they were very symmetrical and ‘quiet’. Hence I decided to expand on the piece on the left to create the one on the bottom. This one was considerably better, as it was ‘noisier’ and more chaotic.

“This is my family. I found it all on my own. Its little and broken, but still good. Yeah, still good.” — Lilo and Stitch (2002)

The key words for this quote is “My family”, “found”, “little”, “broken” and “Good”.

This was tricky as there was a lot more elements to works with and the words had held so much possibilities it was difficult to choose.

For “My Family” I wanted to branch away from the typical family of humans, and wanted to search for other symbolism, like a “family” of animals, or a “family” tree.

“Found” is similar to the above, where i wanted magnifying glasses,  or a trail to show the process of finding.

“Little” I did not want to find and image, rather I wanted to play with the scale of the main ‘characters of the illustration.

“Broken” I referred to broken limbs or injuries at first. However, after, I started researching more, I had broken objects like windows an glass in mind.

“Good” once again refers to the above, idea of good omens, hence lucky items like rabbits feet, clovers, magnets, etc.

In the end, I felt this quote had abit too many elements to piece into a single coposition and chose to focus on the others

Final design:

So in the end, I chose this design to print:

Printing the process:

Before we start the printing process, we first have to print the design on to transparent sheets

Next we need to prepare the silk screen.  Spread a thin equal layer of emulsion on both sides of the screen and put it in the dryer/leave it to dry.

When it is dry, inverted the transparency and paste it onto surface of the frame.

This was the picture would be the mirrored image when it is printed.

When the image is secured, we put it in this machine where it is exposed to light. The machine sucks out the air from the silk screen frame, and the light sensitive emulsion would imprint the image on the transparency on it.

After it comes out of the machine, we can wash the screen with water and a sponge. The emulsion would be scrubbed away from the frame, and the parts that are left behind would be the negative space reflected in the transparency.

After the image is out, pat dry the silk screen and leave it to dry.

When that is done, tape the four sides of the silkscreen such that it crops the image exactly. Do so on the front and the back side of the silkscreen.  By doing so we are preventing leakage of the ink.

After that we lay the silkscreen onto the surface that we want to print on, with the frame side up. Since this a test run, we are using newsprint. Dab some ink horizontally on the top of the area covered in emulsion/tape and make sure it is spread equally. Get someone to help you hold down the frame, putting equal pressure on every side. Making sure you have the correct sized squeegee, pull the ink down in one stroke.

If done correctly, it would look like the picture in the above left. if there is unequal pressure or too little ink, it would turn out like the picture in the right hand side.

Finally, iron the tote bag flat, and stuff it with card board. This will make your printing much easier, as the surface is flat. Align your image to the bag, and print.

Viola~

My Line is Emo Process Part 2

After Consultation, it is quite clear that i have some interpretation error, so its time to relook at my life choices.

Firstly, the definition of ‘Horror’ that i have created would have better suited ‘Paranoia’ now that it think about it. I decided to delve a bit deeper into the idea of texture on my mark making. I wanted a rough texture  on to emphasize on the spikes of ‘Horror’ like a defense, however it turned out very differently.

By using paper mache i attempted to recreate the below effect

I first threw the toilet paper i was using into a container with ink in it to let it soak. Then i used my hand to break up the clumps. After that i sieved through the ink and strained some of the water from the paper mache before finally throwing it on the paper.

It did not end favourably as the consistency of the paper mache started clumping together, or disintegrating when I pulled them apart with a palette knife. Hence I piled more on and it gave off a more ‘disgusting’ vibe.

For ‘Sadness’ photo shopped the ripples, adjusting the light and darkness of the image to create contrasting marks.

I liked the way the overlapped each other, but it still felt a bit plain so I searched through the other rippling effects i had and recomposed the image.

The first composition had a very distracting background, hence, it was deemed as not suitable for the project. The second composition was a bit better, but it still felt as thought the elements stood as individuals rather then a single piece. Thus I created the final composition and cropped it tighter.

‘Affection’ had gone through a few stages of evolution in terms of thickness of the paint as i wanted Affection to have a translucent effect. It is like it is an unconscious feeling that we experience, but do not actually take note of it.

Using black water colour on watercolour paper,  i begin drawing the patterns i did with the cotton buds previously.

The initial composition was not very pleasing as it had not point of convergence. it was messy and there were too many things to see. The second one i rather enjoyed, however it was rather inconsistent, with the tinier loops, which grabbed attention. Thus there were again too many things too look at once again. The third composition I wanted to add tiny emphasis on the paper against a sparse back ground. I dotted the canvas with blobs of water and added the paint by poking it with a brush and letting the paint spread. This sort of insinuates the times were small acts of kindness are acknowledged as affection one feels for others. But it turned out pretty ugly as the paint blobs all had the same texture when it appeared. Finally I created the last design, a sort of vortex that swirls around the centre of the sheet. I wanted it to seem as though it encompasses us, it is always there.

Hence i chose to Dilute the ink, to a fainter consistency and repaint the last design on a final sheet.

‘Hysteria’ came about when I was making ‘Surprise’. Due to the nature of ‘Surprise’ i wanted one single element that showed a change in the scenery. An Explosion or a hiccup on the blank canvas.

I wanted a sharper contrast, hence i used white acrylic paint on black cartridge paper. Using a square brush i begin my mark making . I overestimated how many ‘hiccups’ i wanted and was left with to many blobs of paint. Subsequently, The acrylic paint was not able to make that smooth gradient i wanted by brush alone.

In a fit of frustration I started stabbing the blob of paint with tissue.

I had hoped that it would become a smooth gradient like my previous attempts with Chinese ink on Newsprint

The colour imprint was faint, but i believe with thicker paint the build up would be better.

As it turned out i was wrong about the colour built up. But the effect was quite pleasing to look at. Looking back at it now, the white on black made a stronger more negative connotation to me when the white is solid. It reminds me of those jump scare clips that people post, where the image starts flashing in inverse colours. It was also interesting that the tissue stuck to the paper and made a flaky texture on some parts of the paper.

I decided to try white acrylic on black paper again, but this time with more diluted paint.

After consultation i had wanted to remake a similar composition for ‘Zest’ but in a more positive light.

The effect was beautiful, however the piece had mellowed and become more ‘Contented’ then the lively ball of energy that i had perceived to be ‘Zest’.

Finally was ‘Surprise’. After all the botched attempts for surprise, i had wanted to change the aesthetic of ‘Surprise’ into something surprising. I had sketched out a plan for surprise to be made out of geometric shapes and planned to use ink on paper.

However whist inking it out, it started looking more rigid than i had planned for ‘Surprise’, hence i redid using ink and wash on watercolour paper instead.

The effect was far more fluid then the first.

My Line is Emo – discovering emo.

We were supposed to pick 6 emotions for the project:

  • Affection –> A subset of Love comprising of caring for someone else. (+)
    • It is a feeling that is not always consciously felt, hence i want to illustrate it as wispy, there but not. Sort of like a blanket, layers and layers that overlap each other.
  • Zest –> It is an electric feeling, an adrenaline rush. (+)
    • It is a feeling associated with speed, because you are so excited, you want to rush to get it started. I want it loud with contrasting lines between bold and thin ones. That are multi directional.
  • Surprise –> an unexpected or astonishing event, fact, etc (+)
    • It is a more positive aspect of being startled, a sudden change in emotion, like a hiccup in you mood. Like a hiccup, it is sudden. Sudden is like an explosion, it is there, and the its gone instantly.
  • Envy –> a feeling of discontented or resentful longing aroused by someone else’s possessions, qualities, or luck. (-)
    • It is an unconscious feeling that worms its way inside of you. This threads solidifying into thicker roots. the lines are angular, in does not weave in peacefully among everything else, it forces its way in and roots itself there like a parasite.
  • Sadness –> The state of being unhappy (-)
    • It aches and hurt line something is not there, it feels like being broken. It grows inside when left to fester, like a whirlpool. Yet it hurts like something is missing, sometimes you feel empty.
  • Horror –> It is a nagging that something is there and it builds as it festers (-)
    • It builds up before it reaches the climax. It is a solid negative feeling of being surprised.

*Update:

I redid the emotions, ‘Envy’ was a bit harder to portray and whilst experimenting with what became ‘Horror’ i made ‘Disgust’ hence ‘Envy’ was replaced by this.

‘Horror’ was also replaced by Hysteria, as I was experimenting with ‘Surprise’ it morphed into ‘Hysteria’. (It was a good thing too, i think my definition of ‘Horror’ was not very fitting.)

I redid ‘Zest’ in a rounder brush and realised that it better suited the idea of ‘Contentment’ when it was made with thinner paint. Hence ‘Contentment’ replaced ‘Zest’.

  • Disgust –> grotesque and ugly (-)
    • It is displeasing to see, often textured and bumpy, it makes you go ‘what the heck is this?!’
  • Hysteria –> An extreme emotion of being scared (-)
    • It bursts and colours your mind. it becomes the main focus.
  • Contentment –> the feelings of satisfaction (+)
    • Content is a quite emotion, it is like being in the state of zen.
  • Sadness –> The state of being unhappy (-)
    • It aches and hurt line something is not there, it feels like being broken. It grows inside when left to fester, like a whirlpool. Yet it hurts like something is missing, sometimes you feel empty.
  • Affection –> A subset of Love comprising of caring for someone else. (+)
    • It is a feeling that is not always consciously felt, hence i want to illustrate it as wispy, there but not. Sort of like a blanket, layers and layers that overlap each other.
  • Surprise –> an unexpected or astonishing event, fact, etc (+)
    • It is a more positive aspect of being startled, a sudden change in emotion, like a hiccup in you mood. Like a hiccup, it is sudden. Sudden is like an explosion, it is there, and the its gone instantly

My Line is Emo Process part 1

Other then what i said i was going to bring the previous week, I went scavenging the school grounds for twigs and leaves.

Most of them created dry lines on the paper due to its inability to retain water.

For most scenarios the mark was first very watery, before splitting of into broken hairlines. I did not like it as they gave similar emotions whilst looking at it.

I decided trying to use the leaves in a different way. Since i had been using them whole previously i had decided to cut out a small segment from it.

Using the long flat side I created a rippling effect.

This one looks interesting, its lines are partially broken in some areas and full in others, which creates a slightly negative emotion when looking at it. I’m going to use this for sadness, due to the lines that cut off creating a void, a bit like the emptiness one would feel when they are sad.

I broke the large stick i found in multiple pieces so it was easier to handle. I also made sure that the bark started flaking at the ends so that it gave a rougher texture.

Using the thicker paint i manage to create a few set of interesting lines.

Chucks of the wood ended up in the lines for the first, and it created a jarring effect that i want to use for horror.

The other three i tried to create a swirl pattern, to imitate the idea of Zest, being enthusiastic and all over the place, in my opinion the second and third was the most like Zest.

I saw a palette knife lying around, and wanted to know if the lines created would look the same as the one made by wood.

As it turned out, metal creates more fluid lines then sticks, yet by handling it in certain way, the effect made by the sticks can be replicated with a palette knife.

Someone left the work station dirty with stains on the whiteboard, so I started playing with the work space. It turned out, the effect of wetting the wall and ‘stamping’ it against the paper gave me a more unique effect. i started playing withe the ink, most of them came out with splotches, and empty patches. They looked like sadness.

I am probably going to photoshop all my plausible ‘sadness’ mark making together to create a new composition all together.

Lastly I tried out using the cotton buds. I had a feeling that the cotton buds were going to create uniformly rounded lines, hence choosing it to portray positive emotions like affection.

However, the lines were to uniform. the lack of variation in the entire composition made the composition bland. Hence i would have to look into other ways of creating the idea of ‘Affection’.
