Bug’s Eye View

A bird! Will it step on me? Will it eat me?

Experiment Sketch 1

The thoughts of bugs remind me of the outdoors and nature. As a small sized bug, it is surrounded by tall plants. Hence for the first sketch, I have drawn grasses surrounding the bug.

Experiment Sketch 2

I wanted to explore the place further. I have imagines and drawn how it would be looking up to the sky from the ground in the garden. The second sketch consists of flowers and blades of grass standing highly above the bug. This shows the distinct difference in height and size of the plants and bug.

Final PieceFor the last piece, I have decided to go with the first sketch but making it more interesting by including a living animal i.e. bird. In the sketch, the bird is standing somewhere among the grass looking for food. The bug happens to be facing in the bird’s direction, feeling threatened as it is unsure whether it is standing in the bird’s way, will the bird step on it or worse, has it become the bird’s next meal.

Tourism in Singapore

Sketch 1

For the first sketch, my initial idea was to draw scenery situated near Bayfront which includes the Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay and the ArtScience Museum.

Sketch 2

For the second sketch, my idea developed into a vast aspect of tourism in Singapore. The bus signifies public transport, showing that it is readily accessible and is able to bring us to almost everywhere in Singapore. In addition to the tourist attraction in the first sketch, other sceneries such as Universal Studios were included as well.

Final Piece

For the Final drawing, it is a more comprehensive idea from the second sketch. More tourist attractions such as Botanic Gardens were added in. The public transport was changed from bus to MRT. Most importantly, the tourist attractions were situated on a sardine can – displaying the idiom packed like sardines.

Tourism is definitely an important economic source for Singapore. It has affected me both positively and negatively. One positive aspect would be the advancement in transportation – offering greater convenience and flexibility traveling around. However, with the bustling of tourists in the country, it seems that Singapore is overcrowding in these attractions which is represented by the sardine can.

NUS Museum Field Trip

Title: “For Whom, For What Are You Dying?”

This poster was one of the few pieces that left a deep impression on me. It may appear simple, yet it is very expressive in various ways. E.g. the helmet and rest in peace wood cross represent death of the soldiers in the Vietnam War. The physical gesture of the character(soldier) implies that he is in great pain and sadness. He appears to be grieving over the death of his fellow mates.

Final Home

The three items drawn were: sail, compass and map. They represent home as:

The sail is the iconic symbol in my house, which was given to us by my grandmother who passed away when i was at a young age. This becomes especially sentimental to me as it is one of the rare items she has left for us.

Compass and map show my desire to go home after each trip/outing.
