Field trip to National Gallery of Singapore

Last Saturday was our second field trip and we went to the National Gallery of Singapore. Compared it with STPI, I love this museum a little bit more since it is much bigger and the atmosphere there is easier to drag me into the world of art.

The guide shared some paintings and their history with us. I found this part really interesting because it can makes me understand the painting deeper associates them with the background of the artist and the era.

After the sharing session, I visited all the rooms again and found some paintings I’m interested in.

This one really makes a good use of colour and the line. After watching it, I can feel the vigour and energy. The isolation part and the majority part also create a balance.

This art work is a port scene drew by Mori Kinsen. It is an oil painting. The contrast of the dark colour and small part of the white one shows that it’s going to be day break. And the composition makes the painting very solid. I think it’s quite a master piece for scenery.

Overall, I like the experience of our field trips and I’m quite lucky to see so many art works 🙂

Thoughts about first assignment

Last week, we did our first assignment. I found it was really a hard work since we need to  choose the part of daily life things and composite them to be abstract. Then we need to choose colour combination and textures to create a painting which can reflect some creative thoughts.

I decided to choose the part from my earphone because of its smooth line which can provide a flow feeling. And make it iterate three times. Then I found some textures from my daily things but it was quite a little bit hard to catch them since the paper is somehow thick. The most difficult part for me is to decide the colour. I choose to use the yellow one at the biggest circle in the right corner to make it as the focal point. Then the parts around the focal point I choose to use orange and green which are analogous colour with yellow. As for the background, I choose to use blue which can be contrast with the focal point. And the left part use purple to balance the colour in the painting. As for the part which I decided to use textures, I want to create a feeling of 3D and solid.

After all, I’m not so satisfied with my first assignment. The first reason is that the whole colour is a little bit light and I should have coloured it harder. Also, I didn’t use collage. I think I will put more effort in my next assignment and try to create a more satisfied work next time 🙂

Field trip to STPI

It was a great experience visiting Singapore Tyler Print Institute last Saturday morning. When the hopeful mood in the morning met the amazing works done by Zao Wou-ki, an inspiring impact was created in my mind.

From his style of drawings, I learned that culture can truly influence the way of painting. His paintings combine Chinese ink, calligraphy and western visual art elements together to create a special image. I also found that he is really good at using colours, the combination of dark and light colours can create a dynamic image. And “space” is also a feature in making the painting vivid. The two pictures below are my favourite pieces which can capture my attention at the first glance.

Besides Zao Wou-ki’s works. we also visited the machines for many different kinds of art, like lithography and etching. It shows that the way of art also has evolution along centuries.

I really like this kind of open-eye tour because each time, it will let me be more respect towards art. 🙂

Tourism in Singapore

This place is Chinatown. I think the concept of tourism is the integration of culture. In Chinatown, I see many foreigners who come here to try new things and want to know more culture about China. The hanging things are the lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Year. ~

The first two small pieces are my room. I feel free and beloved in my warm room with my family members. The second one is the road I walked home every night when my school was over. The street lamps were spreading warm lights and knowing my parents had already made dinner for me. I really missed that period of days.
