So the way I chose to approach this assignment is working on the point whereby i choose an object which is of significant value to me and not so much on the emotional “symbolic value” approach. Mainly because I do not feel attached to non-living objects and was unable to find an appropriate object that had symbolic value to me.
Cliche as it might be, my chosen object is my phone as it is really important to me in terms of it’s functionality. I spend the majority of my time in the day doing stuff that involves my phone and it keeps me connected, occupied, entertained and assists me in countless ways in my everyday life.
So, here goes the photos from the initial stages of the assignments with the comments Prof Vlad gave me with regards to the respective photos which I completely agree and am thankful for. The sequence of photos is supposed to be of chronological order of a typical day of my life.
So, for the first photo here, it is supposed to be me introducing the object of my choice in front of ADM (cause where else can we find such a pleasing backdrop). But from Prof Vlad’s point of view, it seems more like a tourist fooling around and getting a shot with the “place of attraction”. Hence, in my final installation, I did not include any introductory photos as there is no significant point in doing so.Secondly, for this shot. It is supposed to be portraying how a phone keeps me entertained, occupied and connected all at the same time. Like how the music playing through the earpiece keeps me entertained in a way and how i might be browsing through social media can keep me occupied when I am alone. Also, leading up to this photo will be me “meeting my friends” and it shows how messaging which my phone provides can aid me in keeping connected with my friends. I believe Prof Vlad found this idea acceptable but thought that i should pay more attention to the settings and also having the emphasis on my phone instead of me.For this third shot, it shows me at a fork road and not knowing where exactly to go and me using the “Maps” function on my phone to help me figure my way around to meet up with my friends. But for this shot, the phone was way too small and insignificant to be seen and there were no indication that the map was in use. Hence, Prof Vlad felt it was more of a commercial for my hairstyle (haha).And for my fourth shot, it is me finally managing to find my friends and meeting them up to go for lecture or wherever we intended to go. For this shot, it seemed more like I am entertaining my friends and it looks as though I am actually singing for them. It was supposed to show that my phone allows me to keep in contact with my friends but apparently, it was not explicit enough. Hence, this shot was out too.So after succeeding in meeting my friends, another purpose of my phone which i wanted to portray was it being a source of entertainment and for me to let my hair down around my friends. This particular shot was meant to depict my friend and I having fun from playing phone games but it turned out to be too aggressive and it seems as though I am actually fighting with my friend. So I improved on this shot and came out with a better one for the final submission where the focus was on the happiness of my friends.For this shot, it is meant to show that my phone is also a medium for me to edit my photos. And it turned out relatively clear in its purpose and the picture was considered visually pleasing. Hence, I decided to use it for my final submission but decided that I could edit it slightly to bring out the phone and it’s screen more prominently.Last but not least, it is my phone functioning as my camera when my camera is not around my side. For this particular shot, I was taking a picture of the sunset happening right outside my Hall’s room one evening. It becomes a essential object for me as capturing moments around me is a very prevalent aspect of my life.
So yah, hope I did not elaborate too much on this post and hope that this is sufficient. 🙂
Photography is a type of 4D art which involves freezing a moment in a thousandth of a second. Knowing which exact moment to depress the shutter is art itself.
