Binaural Sound Experience: Swimming In Your Head

Listen to the final soundscape here

Original Ideas & Storyboards

My original idea for the binaural sound was to create a soundscape of someone folding clothes and putting them in a vacuum bag, since I was interested in how the binaural earphones would pick up sound in a vacuum environment. However, I realised that it would probably be incredibly difficult to get an actual vacuum seal and I might just end up with very uncomfortable and loud noises of plastic crinkling.

The second idea I considered was swimming in a pool, and I wanted to try and recreate the sensation of swimming by switching the soundscape between underwater (clogged audio) and above water. From there though, I expanded my idea to something more abstract, since I wanted to try exploring something that was not trying to replicate a real life soundscape. So I decided to make a soundscape that sounded like somebody was swimming in your head.

Script & Set-up

This was my basic set-up for the recording:

I chose this pot as it was roughly the size of a head, and I taped the earpieces to the sides of the pot. Essentially I made the pot the ‘inside’ of the head of the person listening. Then, I wrote a script that describes a person coming to swim in the listener’s head.
