The Final Pt.2: The Non-Place

THE NON-PLACE

To recap, these images were inspired by the idea of the non-place, a term coined by French anthropologist Marc Augé to refer to anthropological spaces of transience. These are usually places that are man-made and created for a specific function, such as gas stations, bus stops and corridors. The nature of these places means that most human actors pass through as anonymous individuals but do not relate/identify with each other, or the space itself, in any intimate sense. I was intrigued by the mood created by these places, and the possible feelings of loneliness and isolation they could evoke to show the experience of living in a big city.

I continued the same camera processes from Pt.1, shooting at night with ISO at 400 and the aperture at f/16-22, and a slow shutter speed. In editing the photos, I changed the editing processes to further the tone I wanted to convey, with Bryan’s help! I decreased the clarity, texture and dehaze in the Camera Raw Filter to increase the glow and brightness of the overall image. This also evened out a lot of the texture to make surfaces look cleaner and more plastic-like, which added to the highly man-made / constructed feel of the spaces. In addition, I also edited parts of the photo where it seemed natural to include pure black spaces. Then, I cleaned the image to remove any readable signages/words. With these two edits, I wanted to remove any context from the space and make it hard to identify, to increase the surreal and alienating quality of these spaces.
