Process Models – Curvilinear Volumes

This is the second project using cylinders, spheres and cones, exploring the relationship between dominant, sub-dominant and sub-ordinate and the movements among these 3 volumes. There is independent, dependent and precarious balance.

The dominant (D) is the sphere, the sub-dominant (SD) is the cone and the sub-ordinate (SO)  is the cylinder. Making the sphere as the D causes the balance of the whole composition to be stable on the ground. Thus this did not end up as the final model. The SD is balancing precariously on top of the D and SO is sitting on top of the base of the cone. Compared to the sphere, the length of the cone is too similar. Thus, the length of the cone has to be much reduced. Similarly, the length of the cylinder is comparable to the length of the cone, thus the length should also be reduced.

Model 2

The dominant (D) is the cylinder, the SD is cone and the SO is the sphere. This is dependent balance. In this model, the sphere is too big compared to the cone. So, I thought of reducing the cone slightly and reducing the sphere much more all around.

Model 3

Model 1The D is the cone, the SD is the cylinder and the SO is the sphere. This model is the process model of the final model. The diameter of the cylinder was small compared to the diameter of the sphere. This is also the dependent balance so I thought that I should experiment with independent balance. But I also had hard time placing the cylinder, which is the SD. It was as if the cylinder is out of place wherever I put it. So, I went back to the dependent balance in the final model.

Project 1: Picture Story – Curating Self

This project gave me time to think of how to define myself through images. I could explain myself in words but it was very hard for me to explain myself through images. Throughout the process, I learned how to focus on the aspects that I want to focus on and bring them to life through visual images.

I was inspired by Wolfgang Tillmans as he wanted legitimacy of self-representation. By revealing the inner side of me, I hoped that I could reveal the fragility of my identity. My identity will be lost without a place to attach deeply in my life like my home.

Task 1: Me

This task was for me to creatively introduce myself using 3 photographs.  I do not truly show my identity when I am outside. I feel that I can only show the hidden side of me to my family and my really close friends whom I have known for years. Thus I always wear a ‘mask’ of identity that is shown to the world.

P1020825

So, for the first picture, I wanted to represent ‘me’ that I show it to the outside. My skin tone blends with the surrounding, emphasising that this is not the true presentation of myself.

P1030001

I cannot talk about myself without beauty/make-up. I’ve been obsessed with makeup for around 2 years and I went in deep real fast. I invested most of my time learning and researching about beauty products for the past few months after graduating from SOTA. I wanted to show my pride and love towards the beauty products.

P1020939

The last image that introduces myself is an image of me showing the most relaxed state of myself. During my free time, I watch a lot of videos and I think that this is one of the times when I relax without thinking about anything. So, I purposely set the camera so that it really captures my expression when I watch videos.

In this series, I went from the outside layer to the inner layer of myself that I show to the world to the side that can be seen at home.

Task 2: Object and representation of self

This task was to choose an object that is significant to me and I chose knife. When I was young, the free time was dedicated to cutting erasers with pen knife. I used to cut myself sometimes too but that did not scare me to stay away from knife. Rather, I continued to do it till now but I changed object to kitchen knife with food ingredients.

P1020858

This is the first photo that I’ve chosen. I chose this particularly to show the action of cutting. Since the act of cutting is what led me to my love towards knife, I thought that it was only appropriate to start with me focusing on the motion of knife.

P1020876

This shows the close distance of my fingers with the knife to let the viewers see the danger of knife. This is another reason why I put two close-up shots (even though this is a closer shot) to focus on the distance between my fingers and the blade. The general lighting is also dark which signifies my dark side of the reason why I enjoy cutting.

P1020883

The final image shows myself holding the knife. This picture focuses on the expression of myself and the emotions that I feel when I hold the knife. I went to increase the blue and purple in this photograph to mimic horror film. This is because I wanted to portray myself as psychopath. Criminal minds is probably my favourite american drama series because they portray various kinds of psychopaths and I was inspired to try to become one of the characters.

I really enjoyed taking this series as I could introduce the dark and quirky side of me that I haven’t shown it to anyone except my family.

Task 3: My World

Home is my entire world to me. I do not go out a lot. During the long break that I had between graduating SOTA and entering NTU which is about 10 months, I would only go out once or twice a month with my friends and the rest of the time would be spent with my family. Naturally, home is the place where I can relax and have no limits of showing my emotions. Thus, I chose to portray the comfortable and relaxing home as well as the place where I get ready to face the reality.

P1020823

This is the workspace that I share with my mother. This is the seat that I spent the most of my days whether I am doing work or resting. Thus, it holds a lot of significance in my life.

P1020911

And this shows the wider shot of the workspace that I share with my mother. We work together and converse time to time sharing how were our days have been. I wanted to share a moment when I converse with my mother as this is also one of the time when I feel relaxed.

P1020989

And finally, the last shot, I wanted to show my self getting ready to face the reality. Thus, I put it at greyscale to emphasise me putting on the ‘mask’ of myself. Throughout this series, I wanted to introduce the spaces where I relax and also tense again as I enter and exit my house.

Marking Making Tool

My mark-making tools are fountain pen and strings.

01 This mark is made by fountain pen and ink. I felt that using ink, I can express raw emotions (usually negative emotions). The contrast is strong and the saturation of the ink give desirable effect.

These marks are made with strings. Some of the marks I bounced the strings saturated with ink. I thought that the bouncing motions give out positive emotions with energy.

Some of the marks I made by arranging the inked string between two papers and pulling the string held between two papers. This method creates different pattern from drawing the lines. I felt that it creates an expression of wings.

(2) Draft 2The height of the SO is comparable to the height of the SD. Moreover, the height of the SD is similar to the width of D. Thus, the height of SO should become much more smaller and make the SD smaller as well. I turned the SO to the other side so that the width of the SO vary compared to SD without making the SO much smaller. And I pierced the SO so that it can be seen from other angles as well. The model came out with clear D, SD, and SO with the nice balance of volumes. However, I did not make this a final model as I felt that it is not as interesting composition as the final model.

(3) Draft 1

Model 2 had a lot of problems. In some angles, the D has less presence compared to SD. SO should move more towards the ⅓ of SD and could me thinner. Moreover, it is stacked towards one side, so it would be nicer to counterbalance the composition by putting SO to the other side.

So this is the 2 drafts before the final model. At first, SO was too big compared to SD, so SO was reduced a lot in both lengths and height. SD had similar height to D’s width. So, I reduced it to ⅔ of D. After the second model, the D was too big compared to SD and SO, thus, the size of the dominant was reduced. After reducing the width of D, it looked similar to the height of SD, thus SD was reduced again. The orientation of SO also changed to counter balance the SD. Before, SO and SD was placed on the same side. After changing, SO was placed at the other end diagonally opposite of SD. SO looked slightly similar to SD, thus the size of SO reduced a lot from the top view as well, which led me to the final model.

3D Object (Week 1)

The object I chose is a saxophone ornament. This ornament clearly shows the relationship between Dominant, Sub-dominant, and Subordinate.

IMG_6100

The Dominant(D) is the saxophone itself. It occupies the largest volume. The support that  holds the saxophone upright is the Sub-dominant(SD). The Subordinate(SO) of this object are the crystals that enhances the charm.

However, the ratio of the volumes of SD and SO seems like they are inverted. The SD has the least volume compared to D and SO. SD complements D very well that the volume that it occupies becomes negligent. Moreover, SD is supporting the weight of D and SO and this shows the vital role that it plays in the composition of this object.
