Drawing – Charcoal drawing of Still-Life Object

This is my first time using charcoal and I find that the way Prof Woon Lam teaches us on charcoal is very interesting. Using charcoal give us the privilege of making mistake. It can be easily erase and we just have to give it another try! Still on the process on how to use charcoal and this is the work I have done in class.

Drawing – Un-objectifying Objects

On our first lesson, we went to Canteen 2 to do some sketching. We are suppose to un-objectify objects which is to “throw away” our knowledge about that object. Some useful tips is to squint our eyes so that we could only see the outline of the object and start sketching. However, it was not easy for me. I can’t seems to get that concept. This are a few try out that I did.

2D – Exploring emotions

During lesson, we were given an emotion and we have to think of a memory that link to the emotion. There were 4 different emotions, happy, angry, sad and nervous. We have to draw with our eyes closed and using our non-dominant hand.

I realized that through this blind drawing, the drawing will show you something related to what your memory is. I drew out the blur image I have in my head and it turned out into this few drawing.

IMG_1617 IMG_1618

Over the weekend, I went on and explore more on different mark making tools that I can apply on my lines project. I did some pencils drawing too to bring out the emotions.

IMG_1604

RageViolent, uncontrollable anger.

I went about thinking what are some things that “represent” this emotion. With anger inside you, and just bursting out before one even realized it. Using dark with a touch of light stroke, and messy but neat drawing to convey the emotion of containing the anger inside you before releasing.

IMG_1605

AnxietyFeeling of worry, nervousness.

In my mindmap previously, I stated the way to express anxiety is through messiness and lines getting all over the place. Everyone shows anxiety differently. Like how someone look at you that makes you feel that anxiety inside you, it might be different for others.

IMG_1606

Curiosity – Strong desire to know or learn something.

Being curious about everything can be good, that willingness to know/learn something new. However, some people struggle with curiosity. They might be curious about something, but don’t have the courage to find out. Thus, it’s expressed in a way that there can be space for imagination and the struggle to know something but can’t find out.

IMG_1608

SorrowA feeling of deep distress caused by loss, disappointment.

There are many kind of disappointment that led to sorrow. In term of family, friends, BGR and even yourself. Everyone display out in a different way, some struggle while some numb. Thus, it can be something dark, curvy yet with edges.

IMG_1609

DisgustSomething unpleasant.

Disgust can be expressed in many different way due to each individual. What makes them feel disgusted? It can be something that look weird, the way its presented.

IMG_1610

IrritationFeeling annoyed, impatient.

When things get too messy or consecutive sounds/pattern that annoyed them.

IMG_1611

EnergeticActive, bubbly, lively.

A strong curve which gives it power. The way its expanding in the ink.

IMG_1612

ContentmentA state of happiness and satisfaction.

Some gets contented easily, while others are hard to pleased. When one feel contented, it’s like feeling blessed. So I will express it like something smooth, calm and not too complicated.

IMG_1613

SufferingThe state of undergoing pain, distress, hardship.

People who are suffering often feels that the world is in complete darkness. I want to do something that gives off the power of strong, dark and roughness.

Here are some of the other emotions that I have explore on. IMG_1614 IMG_1615 IMG_1616

4D – Conceptualization pt2

My initial idea was to do a before and after and focusing on food. However, i decided to change the theme to Pairs. The reason be it there is not a lot of farm in Singapore and the farm location are quite remote.

Pair, i separate the idea into three different component.

  1. a set of two things used together. For example, some things are meant work together, if one is missing the item can’t function. (Eg. Chopsticks)
  2. When you think of one thing, you will automatically link it to another. Some might not agree, but this is what i think of when one of them is mention. (Eg. Fork & Spoon)
  3. Others like relationship, in term of family, friends or lover

The mindmap below will show you more on the list of item that is link to pair.

pairs

I took a few photo to convey this idea, but this is not how the final composition going to be like.

4D – Conceptualization pt1

My idea was to do a before and after, focusing on food. How is the food like before its process and put on our table. For example, chicken and after processing it, it can turn into a chicken burger or a plate of chicken rice. I went on to research on the type of animal in Singapore that i can capture.

The mindmap shows the type of food i want to do on and the location i want to shoot the animal. There is also another side of the mindmap which shows Singapore. I wanted to show the old Singapore and new Singapore side by side. It’s impossible for me to take photo of the old Singapore, however i can still find images of it online. I will use the old image and take a photo of it at the places that it has become today.

2D – Mark Making | Monoprint

We went about experimenting on mark making tools, everyone in class bring in so many different kinds of items like rambutan skin, leaf and tissue paper. We get to explore with the roller first, and came out with few design like this.

1-021-01IMG_1518

Then we went on and work on rambutan skin, cotton buds, tissue paper, baby breath flower and sticks.

IMG_1521IMG_1517IMG_1516

For the final composition, i used aluminium foil pieces, sticks to draw the lines and using tools to cut. The second piece i used cotton buds and tissue paper to create the pattern.

IMG_1513IMG_1514

Overall, this lesson is fun as we get to explore on many different type of items and make interesting pattern out of it.

4D – Image and Meaning

Something that is not “NTU” at all (you would not expect it to be NTU) – I didn’t get any photo for this because I think whatever that i see in NTU is there for a reason, therefore nothing in NTU in not NTU at all.

Somebody not studying in NTU – The photo is pretty much self-explanatory. However thanks to them our school is so well maintained.

IMG_1277

Somebody studying in NTU – They are surfing the net using their laptop, most probably doing research or studying for their module inside ADM building.

IMG_1282

Useless image you see – To be honest, i will not bother about the amount of calories reduced by climbing this stairs. In NTU, there are tons of stairs to climb everyday, so everyone most probably won’t notice the sign too.

IMG_1274

Useful image you see – As long as the image send out a message, I find it useful. For this case, it’s to remind student not to use plastic bottle and save the environment.

IMG_1279

Nature – Trees and greenery pretty much sums up the term, nature.

IMG_1265

Urban Nature – Adding greenery to building/structure, this is urban nature.

IMG_1272

Urban – A building where people gets to study in.

IMG_1288

Singapore – This banner with a moon and five stars which symbolize Singapore flag.

IMG_1266

A place where art is shown – Inside ADM where students get to showcase their artwork. This wall shows the artwork of ADM year 2 student.

IMG_1287

A place where art is made – Inside ADM, it’s a place where student get to develop their idea into an art.

IMG_1285

A photograph with a faculty – Second row, third from the right. He is a faculty in EOS.

IMG_1291

A photograph that shows what the Earth Observatory of Singapore (EOS) may be about – Everyone will get to know what EOS is about by reading this.

2D – Project 1 “My Line is Emo”

There will be 18 line works corresponding to the various emotions in total. Each line should carry the name of the emotion used. The project outcome will be in black and white only.

The 18 emotions – longing, affection, intimate, cheerfulness, contentment, relief, energetic, hope, disgust, irritation, rage, hate, suffering, rejection, sorrow, anxiety, curiosity and timid.

In the mind map below, there are explanation of the emotions and what kind of aspect I am going to focus on. For example, to me affection is something more of a soft and gentle concept. There might be changes along the way as I explore and discover more on the different emotions, thus there will be changes around.
