For my project 3, it is based on a girl, where she wake up to a world that some things are missing. In the video, nothing seems unusual where she wake up and start doing her daily routine. However, if we take a closer look, the video start to get a bit more strange than usual. If we start to think what is missing? Will we be able to know what we automatically link it with?
These are the two video that I took for the trial version.
The video is taken without tripod, for the further video it will all be on tripod. Some of the feedback I received is that the toothbrush scene was taken too far away. The viewer would not know that the focus is on the toothbrush.
For our final project, we are suppose to create a self portrait based on four different settings. For each of the four rows, we have to use the first column to represent ourselves and the second column to represent a setting an the last column to represent an imagined outcome.
The last 2 project we did not touch on colors at all, this project allows us to explore more on colors. I went on to research more on colors.
Romero Britto
He is an international artist that uses vibrant, bold and colorful patterns to reflect his optimistic view of the world around him.
He play around with a lot of colors and I like how he uses such “happy” colors in his artwork.
Yoshitomo Nara
He is a Japanese artist best known for his paintings of children and animals that appear simultaneously sweet and sinister, with large, expressive eyes that convey an emotional power.
I like how the character have different emotion and imagination. I would most probably go for this type of cartoon-ish style for my project. Still trying to explore more on different platform, will try to create the character by next lesson!
This is the final design for all 4 different movie quotes.

Reflection
How did I come about selecting the movie quotes was based on the movie I watched. Also, I went online to search for famous movie quote and watch it before thinking of the design. Everyone have different understanding towards the movie quotes. It is dependent on how I look at it and try to work on it.
Throughout the process, I feel that I am slowly finding the direction of my work. I did not know what I should use to bring out the meaning of the quote. Therefore, I have to understand the movie quote before working on it. At first, all my design came out too literal and there is no depth to it. After several consultations, I feel that I did improve a lot in my design, for example the movie quote on Hannah Montana: The Movie. I am always not confident in my work on whether this will work out for this quote or not. Thus, the feedback that I received was very useful for me to improve on my work. All the references provided also allow me to explore more into my design.
This is also the first time I doing silkscreen printing thus it a whole new experience for me. Overall, it was fun exploring new things and looking at the final product was pleasing too.
From the beginning, we are suppose to pick one quote out of the 4 and transfer the design onto the tote-bag. The quote that I have been working on is:
Life’s a climb, but the view is great. – Hannah Montana: The Movie
I have changed my design several time, and this is the final design that I have transfer onto the tote-bag. I did the whole process of silkscreen printing again to get my design onto the silkscreen.
Click here to view the post on the process of silkscreen testing.
After consultation, these are the updated design from the previous development and there is one more movie quote to complete the whole project.
I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise. – Titanic (1997)
This is the updated design, where I added in the waves to symbolize the ocean. The whole idea is still the same as I mention in my previous post, where the skull representing the death on Jack. While at the back of his mind, he have never forgotten about Rose till the last minute as you can see in the design where there is roses and a woman face.
Anyone can be anything – Zootopia (2016)
In my previous post, I mentioned that the geometry effect I use for the animal was too off from the human face design as the lines are not prominent enough. Thus, I went on to explore more on different images and this is the latest design. Where a woman trying to become something that she want to be. I uses animal as they all have different personalities, it is able to bring out the idea of what the woman is trying to achieve. Be it the characteristic of a wolf or a cat.
I realize now that dying is easy, living is hard. – If I Stay (2014)
She sees Denny in a room with a patch over his eye. She overhears the doctors say that both Kat and Denny are dead, and that if Mia wakes up at all, she is going to be an orphan. Fearing for Teddy, Mia runs to his room to check on him and promises to never leave his side. Mia runs downstairs and sees Teddy’s room empty. The doctors talk to her grandparents and inform them that Teddy had an epidural hemorrhage and they couldn’t save him. Mia breaks down and realizes Teddy will never get to grow up and live a full life. This sudden shock physically disturbs Mia, and the doctors take her out of the ICU for further medical attention.
The quote says that dying is easy, I uses a girl hanging upside down because she doesn’t know what to do anymore and the rope to represent how vulnerable life is if she decided that she wants to end her life. She is still struggling between living and dying, there is something on earth that she doesn’t want to let go, which must be something beautiful and would make her want to stay. So should her expression be happy or sad? Thus, I use flowers to cover her facial expression.
She wake up to a typical morning, nothing seems unusual to her. However, things start to get strange when she starts brushing her teeth without toothpaste, wearing socks with only one side and same goes for the shoes. More and more things are missing from her daily life. What had happened?
I plan to work on my project 1 and 2 for my project 3 which is on the topic pair. Through the video, I want the audience to find out what is missing in the video. and how are some items automatically link together without us saying because we are so used to seeing them together.
I will continue to do some research on how I want my video to be presented, in term of the layout and background and what are some other approach that i could use to make my video better.
I have to come out with 3 more design linking to any movie quotes. I went on and search some of the movies that I watched and did the design based on this quotes.
I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise. – Titanic (1997)
The ship breaks in half, lifting the stern into the air. Jack and Rose ride it into the ocean and he helps her onto a wooden panel only buoyant enough for one person. Holding the edge, he assures her that she will die an old woman, warm in her bed. He dies of hypothermia but she is saved.
Most people was thinking why did Rose let go of his hand after saying this sentence “I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise.” However, it was referring to the promise that Jack want Rose to not let go, as shown in the images above.
I decided to use a skull to represent the death of Jack, but in his mind he still cannot forget Rose. Thus, i added a lady to represent Rose along with the flower rose. However what are some different approach that I could consider was to make the lady the main object instead of the skull. It is because that sentence was said by Rose and she will never forget the promise that she had with Jack. Or using this design but add in some details to symbolize titanic which is to add some ocean waves, etc.
Anyone can be anything – Zootopia (2016)
In the town of Bunnyburrow, Judy Hopps is performing in a play for a talent show. The theme is that animals used to only be predator and prey, but now they have evolved to the point where they can all live side by side, and every animal can be whatever they want to be.
I use a human face and at the back of her mind there is always something she wanted to be which I use animal to represent it. I tried using the transform approach and make the lady transform into anything she want to be.
Something to improve on is the animals. As compared to the lady with thick and thin line, the lines of the animal is not prominent enough. Thus I will consider changing it to images like this.
Still trying to improve on the design and will upload the updated version soon.
I have never notice how some things in life are pair together by nature. When I start to realize how things are linked to one another, I start to have this thought in my mind; what if one of them is missing one day? This series of photo includes items that are standing alone without their partner. The items are deliberately placed on white background towards the left side of the frame to bring out the emptiness on the right where their missing pair is supposed to be. This allows the viewer to start thinking about what is missing in the photo. This is where they will start to realize how their brain subconsciously link the missing item with the one displayed.
The process of coming out with items to photography was tedious. I have a hard time thinking of what item have a missing pair. I tried separating them into two different category so that I can narrow down my selection. Thus, this was the few items based on whether they can function with/without one another and how our brain link two item together. I definitely learn a thing or two since project 1, receiving feedback on how to improved the project, like how I decided to use plain background to complicated background and back to my original white background. The overall experience was fun, and how the project improved since project 1.
Here’s the reason behind why I decided to do on the topic “pairs” is because I chance upon this quote. This makes me wonder, what are some other item that come in pair and everyone just think it is natural for this item to be place together, that we cannot separate them in a way or another.
After consultation with Mimi, I realize my previous work was too complicated. I wanted to use the ladder to portray the sun ray.
However, it kinda fail. The ladders is too distracting in the middle and it doesn’t seems to work in this design. Mimi told me to get inspiration from this artist, Dan Hillier.
Dan Hillier
I like how he combined the element together and give it a totally different feel. I tried to use this into my movie quote, however I need some comment on whether it works.
Life’s a climb, but the view is great. – Hannah Montana: The movie
This is my updated version. I did two different design. For the first one, I tried using trees, flowers, branches to illustrate the view. The girl was standing on top of the mountain looking at the view. The layout kind of like stuck here, I tried spreading the trees apart too but I’m not sure what can I remove or add on to make it more interesting.
For the second design, it was still the girl standing on top of the mountain. This time the forest is like surrounding the girl and she is looking at the view.
