Drawing – Figure Drawing & Watercolor Painting

In class, we went on to learn how to draw hand and head. Like the proportion of our palm to our fingers. How each fingers have 3 joint and the ratio to each parts. During my last assignment, I left out the hand part and didn’t draw it in because my hand always turn out looking weird. Still trying to get the idea of positioning the hand so that it looks natural and nicely placed.

Here is our prof Woon lam trying to explain to us the bone structure of a human.

img_2289

He also teaches us how to draw head using the volume. How the head is tilt in different angle, when it’s lying down or facing different direction.

He went on to teach us on water color painting. It’s amazing how he uses one color and created so many different gradient to it by adjusting the amount of water use. This is some of the painting he does in class to show us how we can play around with water color.

We went on to try out on our own. I went on to explore on some colors, however my painting is a bit too safe. I didn’t dare to add more water to create the different tone. Where my painting turn out to be too flat.

2D – Project 2 Silkscreen Testing

During class, we try out silkscreen printing for the first time. We are tasked to print our design on transparency.

img_2315

From coating to exposing and then inking the design, I find the whole process was interesting.  I realize some part of my design doesn’t come off very well. It might be the gray scale or some parts of the design details is too small to come out nicely.

img_2273

After everything is done, I try inking it on paper. However, the first try fail because there was too much ink and it smudged. I continue a few more times with lesser ink, and the details come out more and more clearly.

img_2281img_2280fullsizerender

I decided to change the design after consultation with Mimi, thus I have to remove the emulsion away using some chemical.

This is the first time I’m doing silkscreen printing and the experience was good! Looking forward to printing my design on tote bag on the next lesson! Meanwhile, I will be working on improving my design now!

4D – Project 2 Concept Development 2

After doing more research, I decided to work on Pair. I went on to do some test shot.

I tried taking photo of one object against white background. I want the viewer to start thinking what is missing in the photo.

1018

I went on and try taking another photo, which is to show some part of the missing pair in the background. However, I receive comment from my friends that it turn out to be too obvious and literal for the viewer. Thus, I decided to use the first approach which is shown above.

I went on to research on more different type of items that comes in pair and continue with the shooting. I am done with my project 2, and will upload everything once the presentation is over.

4D – Project 2 Concept Development 1

I want to work on my Project 1 which is on the topic pair. However, I do not know what can I do to make it stand out from Project 1. Thus, I went online to search on pair. All I get was couple photo everywhere in google. This is not what I want to work on. Thus I was kinda stuck with my idea here.

ss

After consultation, I realize my friends and Robert love how my initial idea was on Project 1 which is taking object against white/black background as compared to my Project 1 final submission.

Initial Idea:

Final submission:
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
The background is fighting for attention and it is too complicating that the main object does not stand out.

Pair
I went back and thinking if I should continue on this topic or come out with a new one. I went to look at different magazine to get inspiration. As I was going through the magazine, I realize how magazine only shows one side of the shoe in almost every photo that is related to shoes. So I wanted to focus on only shoe for found images. However, Robert throw me back a question, “what are you suggesting by simply looking for just one shoe?” Then I realize there is no purpose to this range on found images. Thus, I decided to abandon this idea.

Make-up
As I was going through the magazine to look for pair, I came across many girls with make-up images. I wanted to portray how can make-up change a girl confidence/self esteem and etc. The comment I received was it will be a more interesting approach to look for images without make-up because that would be a more critical stance on how woman are always portrayed with make-up in the media.

img_2220 img_2219

However, this two idea was too literal to match the idea. I have to think is there any other way I can look at this two idea different?

Robert suggested that the idea is to flesh something that is originally not there in the images, and not use them as an accompaniment to illustrate what is obvious.

Thus, I went on to research more on still life photography.

Robert Mapplethorpe

He is an American photographer, known for his sensitive yet blunt treatment of controversial subject-matter in the large-scale. His photo are mostly in black and white medium. He also experimented with various materials in mixed-media collages, including images cut from books and magazines. I like how he uses a simple background to allows the audience to have the full attention on the object itself.

I should research more before concluding on which idea I want to work for in Project 2. I tend to drift my thoughts towards something too literal and that is something I should work on.

2D – Project 2 Process v3

Life’s a climb, but the view is great. – Hannah Montana: The movie

After receiving some comment on the previous post, I decided to use the first design as the design should be based on my quote only. I changed away the background as grey will not appear as such when doing silkscreen.

This is the updated version.

This was the previous design. 3

2D – Project 2 Process v2

I went on to google more on different movie quote. I came across this movie quote and find it interesting. I watched the movie before starting on the composition.

Hannah Montana: The Movie – Life’s a climb. But the view is great!
He tells her that Hannah is going out of control and Miley needs to gain perspective and remember who she truly is. Instead of leaving for the World Music Awards in New York on a private jet, the Stewarts land in Crowley Corners, Tennessee, their hometown, for Miley’s grandmother’s birthday. Miley is angry at her father for the switch but Robby Ray points out that this is the life she could’ve been leading if she was not famous.

I came out with 3 different design for this quote.

1. With mountains and ladders to symbolize climbing in the scene. The sunset at the background is to illustrate on the view. Good things always come after some hardship.

3

2. Miley Stewart is struggling with her alter-ego and her popularity as Hannah Montana and keeping her double-life a secret from the media. Thus this design shows both side of her, one where she is just an ordinary country girl where another is the life of a singer.

4

3. This design shows whatever Hannah likes or love to do. It’s all inside her, be it singing, dancing, or being a country girl. It is all part of her life and all the end of the day, it’s just doing what she love.

2D – Project 2 Process v1

We are tasked to pick 4 movie quotes and create a visual narrative that expresses each quote.

I did a few design on different movie quote. However, after consultation I realize my design are all too flat. I created the visual based on the quote itself, where there is no deeper meaning to it.

Finding Nemo – Just keep swimming.
During the chaos and blinded temporarily by the dust, Dory accidentally drops the mask into the darkness below. Marlin gives it up for lost but Dory cheerfully takes him into the depths, telling him to just keep swimming.

In this design, I was only thinking on adding Nemo in and swimming in the ocean. I should add in more element to bring out the quote instead of just this.

What a girl wants – Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?
To please her father and his social circle, she abandons her old style and dons the upper-class sophisticated look, and behaves herself.
Ultimately, Daphne rejects her new self because it is not who she is. She returns to America, and restarts her work as a wedding server.

why-are-you-trying-so-hard-to-fit-in-when-youre-born-to-stand-out

In this design, I want make one of the girl stand out from the rest. Thus I added some filter over one girl while the rest just blend in at the back.

It’s a wonderful life – Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.
George Bailey is about to kill himself, and they need to send an angel down to Earth to stop him. They select Clarence, a somewhat down-on-his-luck angel who hasn’t earned his wings yet, but who they decide is right for the job. The senior angels promise that Clarence will get his wings if he succeeds.

everytime-a-bell-rings-an-angel-gets-his-wing

In this design, I picked out the keyword of the quote which is bell, angel, wings. End up the design turn out to be flat. It’s not as interesting as the quote is, like what’s the meaning behind this quote? On what circumstances will a bell ring?

Titanic – You jump, I jump.
As her boat lowers, Rose decides that she cannot leave Jack and jumps back on board.

you-jump-i-jump

In this design, I used a sinking boat to illustrate the scene and the silhouette of the scene “You jump, I jump” as seen above where they are holding on to each other. This design end up to be too direct again.

Mimi gave me some suggestion on different approach. Like looking at different book cover. How they uses image to attract audience attention.

There are also some interesting movie poster design too.

I am still trying to improve on my design, figuring out the technique to use in different individual.
