Reflection

How did I come about selecting the movie quotes was based on the movie I watched. Also, I went online to search for famous movie quote and watch it before thinking of the design. Everyone have different understanding towards the movie quotes. It is dependent on how I look at it and try to work on it.

Throughout the process, I feel that I am slowly finding the direction of my work. I did not know what I should use to bring out the meaning of the quote. Therefore, I have to understand the movie quote before working on it. At first, all my design came out too literal and there is no depth to it. After several consultations, I feel that I did improve a lot in my design, for example the movie quote on Hannah Montana: The Movie. I am always not confident in my work on whether this will work out for this quote or not. Thus, the feedback that I received was very useful for me to improve on my work. All the references provided also allow me to explore more into my design.

This is also the first time I doing silkscreen printing thus it a whole new experience for me. Overall, it was fun exploring new things and looking at the final product was pleasing too.

2D – Project 2 Process of Totebag Making

From the beginning, we are suppose to pick one quote out of the 4 and transfer the design onto the tote-bag. The quote that I have been working on is:

Life’s a climb, but the view is great. – Hannah Montana: The Movie

I have changed my design several time, and this is the final design that I have transfer onto the tote-bag. I did the whole process of silkscreen printing again to get my design onto the silkscreen.
Click here to view the post on the process of silkscreen testing.

This is the design on the silkscreen.

2D – Project 2 Process v6

After consultation, these are the updated design from the previous development and there is one more movie quote to complete the whole project.

I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise. – Titanic (1997)

This is the updated design, where I added in the waves to symbolize the ocean. The whole idea is still the same as I mention in my previous post, where the skull representing the death on Jack. While at the back of his mind, he have never forgotten about Rose till the last minute as you can see in the design where there is roses and a woman face.

Anyone can be anything – Zootopia (2016)

In my previous post, I mentioned that the geometry effect I use for the animal was too off from the human face design as the lines are not prominent enough. Thus, I went on to explore more on different images and this is the latest design. Where a woman trying to become something that she want to be. I uses animal as they all have different personalities, it is able to bring out the idea of what the woman is trying to achieve. Be it the characteristic of a wolf or a cat.

I realize now that dying is easy, living is hard. – If I Stay (2014)

She sees Denny in a room with a patch over his eye. She overhears the doctors say that both Kat and Denny are dead, and that if Mia wakes up at all, she is going to be an orphan. Fearing for Teddy, Mia runs to his room to check on him and promises to never leave his side.
Mia runs downstairs and sees Teddy’s room empty. The doctors talk to her grandparents and inform them that Teddy had an epidural hemorrhage and they couldn’t save him. Mia breaks down and realizes Teddy will never get to grow up and live a full life. This sudden shock physically disturbs Mia, and the doctors take her out of the ICU for further medical attention.

The quote says that dying is easy, I uses a girl hanging upside down because she doesn’t know what to do anymore and the rope to represent how vulnerable life is if she decided that she wants to end her life.  She is still struggling between living and dying, there is something on earth that she doesn’t want to let go, which must be something beautiful and would make her want to stay. So should her expression be happy or sad? Thus, I use flowers to cover her facial expression.

2D – Project 2 Process v5

I have to come out with 3 more design linking to any movie quotes. I went on and search some of the movies that I watched and did the design based on this quotes.

I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise. – Titanic (1997)

The ship breaks in half, lifting the stern into the air. Jack and Rose ride it into the ocean and he helps her onto a wooden panel only buoyant enough for one person. Holding the edge, he assures her that she will die an old woman, warm in her bed. He dies of hypothermia but she is saved.

titanic-ill-never-let-go-jack-i-promise

Most people was thinking why did Rose let go of his hand after saying this sentence “I’ll never let go, Jack. I promise.” However, it was referring to the promise that Jack want Rose to not let go, as shown in the images above.

I decided to use a skull to represent the death of Jack, but in his mind he still cannot forget Rose. Thus, i added a lady to represent Rose along with the flower rose. However what are some different approach that I could consider was to make the lady the main object instead of the skull. It is because that sentence was said by Rose and she will never forget the promise that she had with Jack. Or using this design but add in some details to symbolize titanic which is to add some ocean waves, etc.

Anyone can be anything – Zootopia (2016)

In the town of Bunnyburrow, Judy Hopps is performing in a play for a talent show. The theme is that animals used to only be predator and prey, but now they have evolved to the point where they can all live side by side, and every animal can be whatever they want to be.

I use a human face and at the back of her mind there is always something she wanted to be which I use animal to represent it. I tried using the transform approach and make the lady transform into anything she want to be.

7

Something to improve on is the animals. As compared to the lady with thick and thin line, the lines of the animal is not prominent enough. Thus I will consider changing it to images like this.

Still trying to improve on the design and will upload the updated version soon.

2D – Project 2 Process v4

After consultation with Mimi, I realize my previous work was too complicated. I wanted to use the ladder to portray the sun ray.

wooden_ladder_stock_photo____png_by_annamae22-d7t7xfy 329acad3-d75a-4246-a009-4854944eb808

However, it kinda fail. The ladders is too distracting in the middle and it doesn’t seems to work in this design. Mimi told me to get inspiration from this artist, Dan Hillier.

Dan Hillier

I like how he combined the element together and give it a totally different feel. I tried to use this into my movie quote, however I need some comment on whether it works.

Life’s a climb, but the view is great. – Hannah Montana: The movie

This is my updated version. I did two different design. For the first one, I tried using trees, flowers, branches to illustrate the view. The girl was standing on top of the mountain looking at the view. The layout kind of like stuck here, I tried spreading the trees apart too but I’m not sure what can I remove or add on to make it more interesting.

13

For the second design, it was still the girl standing on top of the mountain. This time the forest is like surrounding the girl and she is looking at the view.

2D – Project 2 Silkscreen Testing

During class, we try out silkscreen printing for the first time. We are tasked to print our design on transparency.

img_2315

From coating to exposing and then inking the design, I find the whole process was interesting.  I realize some part of my design doesn’t come off very well. It might be the gray scale or some parts of the design details is too small to come out nicely.

img_2273

After everything is done, I try inking it on paper. However, the first try fail because there was too much ink and it smudged. I continue a few more times with lesser ink, and the details come out more and more clearly.

img_2281img_2280fullsizerender

I decided to change the design after consultation with Mimi, thus I have to remove the emulsion away using some chemical.

img_2278

This is the first time I’m doing silkscreen printing and the experience was good! Looking forward to printing my design on tote bag on the next lesson! Meanwhile, I will be working on improving my design now!

2D – Project 2 Process v3

Life’s a climb, but the view is great. – Hannah Montana: The movie

After receiving some comment on the previous post, I decided to use the first design as the design should be based on my quote only. I changed away the background as grey will not appear as such when doing silkscreen.

This is the updated version.

This was the previous design. 3

2D – Project 2 Process v2

I went on to google more on different movie quote. I came across this movie quote and find it interesting. I watched the movie before starting on the composition.

Hannah Montana: The Movie – Life’s a climb. But the view is great!
He tells her that Hannah is going out of control and Miley needs to gain perspective and remember who she truly is. Instead of leaving for the World Music Awards in New York on a private jet, the Stewarts land in Crowley Corners, Tennessee, their hometown, for Miley’s grandmother’s birthday. Miley is angry at her father for the switch but Robby Ray points out that this is the life she could’ve been leading if she was not famous.

7d2b54234a68fc2baab7459f34e2f265

I came out with 3 different design for this quote.

1. With mountains and ladders to symbolize climbing in the scene. The sunset at the background is to illustrate on the view. Good things always come after some hardship.

3

2. Miley Stewart is struggling with her alter-ego and her popularity as Hannah Montana and keeping her double-life a secret from the media. Thus this design shows both side of her, one where she is just an ordinary country girl where another is the life of a singer.

4

3. This design shows whatever Hannah likes or love to do. It’s all inside her, be it singing, dancing, or being a country girl. It is all part of her life and all the end of the day, it’s just doing what she love.

6

2D – Project 2 Process v1

We are tasked to pick 4 movie quotes and create a visual narrative that expresses each quote.

I did a few design on different movie quote. However, after consultation I realize my design are all too flat. I created the visual based on the quote itself, where there is no deeper meaning to it.

Finding Nemo – Just keep swimming.
During the chaos and blinded temporarily by the dust, Dory accidentally drops the mask into the darkness below. Marlin gives it up for lost but Dory cheerfully takes him into the depths, telling him to just keep swimming.

just-keep-swimming

In this design, I was only thinking on adding Nemo in and swimming in the ocean. I should add in more element to bring out the quote instead of just this.

finding-nemo

What a girl wants – Why are you trying so hard to fit in when you were born to stand out?
To please her father and his social circle, she abandons her old style and dons the upper-class sophisticated look, and behaves herself.
Ultimately, Daphne rejects her new self because it is not who she is. She returns to America, and restarts her work as a wedding server.

why-are-you-trying-so-hard-to-fit-in-when-youre-born-to-stand-out

In this design, I want make one of the girl stand out from the rest. Thus I added some filter over one girl while the rest just blend in at the back.

what-a-girl-want

It’s a wonderful life – Every time a bell rings, an angel gets his wings.
George Bailey is about to kill himself, and they need to send an angel down to Earth to stop him. They select Clarence, a somewhat down-on-his-luck angel who hasn’t earned his wings yet, but who they decide is right for the job. The senior angels promise that Clarence will get his wings if he succeeds.

everytime-a-bell-rings-an-angel-gets-his-wing

In this design, I picked out the keyword of the quote which is bell, angel, wings. End up the design turn out to be flat. It’s not as interesting as the quote is, like what’s the meaning behind this quote? On what circumstances will a bell ring?

its-a-wonderful-life

Titanic – You jump, I jump.
As her boat lowers, Rose decides that she cannot leave Jack and jumps back on board.

you-jump-i-jump

In this design, I used a sinking boat to illustrate the scene and the silhouette of the scene “You jump, I jump” as seen above where they are holding on to each other. This design end up to be too direct again.

Mimi gave me some suggestion on different approach. Like looking at different book cover. How they uses image to attract audience attention.

There are also some interesting movie poster design too.

I am still trying to improve on my design, figuring out the technique to use in different individual.

2D – Project 1 Final outcome | Reflection

IMG_1976 IMG_1977IMG_1982 IMG_1980

Emotions can be so easy to feel but hard to express. In our everyday life, we see and feel emotions everywhere. How do I express it in art? I went to look up on the different definition to get a better understanding of each emotion. After, I went online and research on emotions and did some drawing in my sketchbook before trying out on different tools. Those drawing make me have a clearer picture of the emotions.

During the weekend, I get whatever material I can as my mark marking tools. Then continue trying out different tools and get many different pattern and texture. How do I use these tools to express the emotion? At first, I did not take into consideration of the emotion while doing it. I tried experimenting with the different tools and found out which tools and pattern can suit a certain emotion.

I applied the things that I learn in class and the process of experimenting different tools in my final outcome. I learnt that everyone have different perspective in emotion and feel it in a different way. How I express that particular feeling is what I feel about it that others might not agree. Overall, it was fun exploring so many different kinds of tools and the learning outcome was great.
