Interactive Narrative: Sharing 11

Riverdale Comic Creator

https://riverdalecomiccreator.tumblr.com/

The website is a narrative site where the user can choose to interact with it via scrolling of the mouse or just letting the site auto scroll. It is interesting where the narrative is portrayed in the form of a comic book.

It can be argued that it is not interactive storytelling but I personally feel that it is in a way where the user can have a choice to interact or not. It brings comic books/ stories to the digital platform where it used to be available in prints only.

It may not be related to my final project but I felt it was good to explore different types of narrative interaction to expand on my understanding of it. I could probably use it for my further projects that I would be working on.

The Witcher 3: Wild hunt

http://thewitcher.com/en/map

The website enables the user to click and scroll through the map to explore the area. It shows a detailed map of the location and the red icons enables one to explore the place when it is being clicked.

Information of place

Inspiration: The placement of the elements in the interactive map can be used as a guide to know how to make the board game not too crowded and flow at the same time. Instead of clickable icons, the coloured dots will have cards to reenact the information displayed.

The simple colour scheme can be a way to join all the look & feel together. In terms of cultural festivals, there are many colours involved to show a vibrant style.

The Magicians

The website displays a map and when different locations are chosen there will be a storyline will appear on the right side. Arrows are seen to navigate around the map or the user can click on the different elements shown.

Development: The board game can take reference of how the player will navigate through the site to the board game. The different elements show different story line could be a way of showing the cards when the player stops at a coloured spot.

Future development: There could be a way to make the board game digitalised so that the players can play online with their friends without having to bring a physical board around.

Rogue One: Star Wars

https://swro.fcinq.com/

The website allows the user to login in via their facebook messenger or continue via a visitor view. As they progress on there is a mission they have to accomplish. It seems like a documentary game narrative as the user gets to experience the whole mission game play.

Difficulties: When referencing the website of smooth flow, I need to think of ways to allow the game flow to work out nicely so that the players are able to learn more about the different cultural festivals in Singapore. I need to find a balance to the learning and playing of the board game experience.

Plans: I would be asking my friends to try out my board game to see if the game rules are clear and how they react when playing to further improve the loopholes.

Pottermore: Patronus

https://my.pottermore.com/patronus

The website is a simple click interaction where you will be able to create your own creature depending on your choice. You can read more about the creature you have created here: https://my.pottermore.com/user-profile/patronus. Despite not having an explicit storyline, the user can interact with the creature.

It is an interesting approach to allow the user to interact with a mythical creature based on their choices chosen. It can be a way of interactive narrative.

Van Tich (Once Upon) A Vietnam's folktale boardgame

Van Tich (Once Upon)
A Vietnam’s folktale boardgame

Website: https://www.behance.net/gallery/46592347/Van-Tich-(Once-Upon)-A-Vietnams-folktale-boardgame

The game is based on a story book, Van Tich. They transformed it into a game where it is based on the terrain of Vietnam. The players have to collect a set of cards to meet the king’s requirement. They have to roll a dice to move forward.

Inspiration: It will be quite similar in terms of the map where I would be trying to use Singapore map while incorporating different elements that represent the festivals. The different dots on my game will have different colours to draw the cards accordingly.

Tokaido

Tokaido

Website: http://passportgamestudios.com/game/tokaido/

This board game allows the players to slowly explore and experience Japan in the ancient Tokugawa dynasty. The game is a slow paced game where the players will have to complete the journey and the players will collect cards along the way. As they purchase or get cards with different points, the player with the most points wins. It is a relaxing game to experience the zen feeling.

Inspiration: This could be a way for me to portray my cultural festival game where the players can understand the festivals better through the game play. There will also be cards that gives them information of what places to visit or food to try or understanding more about other’s festivals.

Sochi 2014 Interactive Map

Sochi 2014 Interactive Map

Website: http://sochi2014interactivemap.com/#

The website allows the user to drag around to explore Russia, Sochi involvement with olympics in 2014. There are some animations in the background with catches the attention of the user. Some of the graphics will change from a normal dragging hand cursor to a click hand cursor where more information is given about the specific area.

The draggable background image with hovering of individual elements for more information is something I would like to explore for the technology part.

Inspiration: The design showcase is similar to how I would want to portray the cultural festivals in Singapore. The simple hovering gives the user bitesize information which can spark their curiosity to want to learn more about them. The draggable function enables the user to go to discover different festivals and immerse themselves in them.

The Production Kitchen

https://www.jacquico.com/

It is a simple drag around website where the users are able to see the process of baking. There are some animation around as they explore the site. There are some interaction within the site where the can press ‘a’ and ‘d’ to move the ball and click to colour the food with the colour palette.

I feel that this can be incorporated with my interactive narrative idea where the user can drag around Singapore map to explore the different types of festivals we celebrate here. Probably they can interact with some elements to have fun at the same time.
