Project 2a: Locale Research

Initially, I wanted my zine to be based on NUS, specifically, the Ridge View Residential College (RVRC) area. A close friend of mine currently stays there and is always going on and on about how scenic her area is and the many pros of staying in the RVRC. However, after my first visit there, I sort of got stuck a little. The place is very nice: it is picturesque and had this sleepy, laidback vibe about it. Having said that, I did not really know what angle I could take in my zine.

I tried to expand it to the entire NUS campus but a visit to the campus ground again just left me overwhelmed and on the verge of having a mental breakdown as we were due to present our findings as well as the angle for the zine in class the following week.
It was a visit to the Singapore Art Museum the weekend before the presentation that led me to the current location for my zine: the Bugis and Bras Basah area, focussing specifically on the 2 main museums in that area, namely the Singapore Art Museum and the National Museum of Singapore. The original idea behind the zine was sparked when I was walking around the exhibits and it suddenly occurred to me how the exhibits changed quite a bit. That thought led to me thinking, how museums were like short-term accommodations for artworks and various exhibits. With that in mind, I started to create the slides for the presentation in class, deciding to focus specifically on the Singapore Art Museum.
To be honest, there was not a lot of information I could gather from that one trip on a Sunday afternoon. Plus, it would not have been very accurate either as there was an event going on at that point in time so things were a little different (it was the last weekend for Singapore Design Week). Much of it was secondary research (information off the internet) and based on my past visits to the area. Also, as I was mainly at the Singapore Art Museum to check out an exhibition, I ended up not being able to cover a wider area and that contributed to the lack of information as well. Below are the slides created for the class presentation.

I knew the concept was not strong enough so I did go back to the museum after. However, more stuff cropped up (because why not eh :’)) and that led to some changes in the direction of the zine. These changes will be touched upon in the process post.
