Thoughts on “52 Procent”

19min, directed by Rafal Skalski, 2007. The main character is “Alla”, eleven years old in Russia.

Pacing is great. Don’t have to run along with the story. The duration of the documentary was also good. Didn’t get bored.

In the film, seeing the ballet selection process brought up images in my head of slaves getting their teeth checked, athletes training for some event. Or a military parade where the soldiers have to march in rank and file. It’s good to see young children working towards a goal and not just playing pokemon go. But I was fearing that the wannabe ballerinas may injure themselves doing their leg bends and stretches.

Prof. Moody pointed out several themes at play in the documentary – for age: young applicants vs older judges, mother-child relationship, and stuff on drama.

Thinking about the documentary that I’m working on with Kaizer, not sure how to work on the drama.b2
