2D – EGO Project

Style/Inspirations:

To create a set of designs that are more in line with my personality and style, I decided to go for a style that was slightly more quirky. Keeping that in mind, I started on a moodboard to keep me grounded in my work, and to ensure that there was consistency and coherence in my overall design.

Process:

After looking through examples, I decided to use a mix of photography and vector art for my equations. I felt that the mix of photography (real-life) and vector art (drawn on – made up) were a good reflection of how we see ourselves – a mix of reality  and what we create for ourselves/what we perceive.

I first came up with some rough ideas and sketched based on the ideas I had:

After sketching and planning the composition for each picture, I started taking photos and using illustrator to draw out the vector art I needed.

Except for the finger in the very first picture, all images and illustrations were done by me.

Assignment 2 – Nursery Rhymes

LINE CHOSEN: SHE HAD SO MANY CHILDREN SHE DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO

FINAL 4:

listed below are my 4 final art works + a short explanation of each image

Scale-Drowning   AttackBirth Machine

(In sequence:)

  • Mother is crushed by the weight of her babies on the scale to signify how insignificant she is in power and control against her kids. The babies represent most of the frame to signify their dominance.  (theme 1)
  • Mother is drowning in babies to symbolise how overwhelmed she is by her duties as a mother (theme 2)
  • Mother is eventually driven crazy by the babies to symbolise the mental torture she goes through (theme 3)
  • Mother literally has ‘so many children she didn’t know what to do’, and is thus seen harvesting babies and stuffing them in huge sacks behind her. (theme 4)

INSPIRATIONS:

I was inspired by the works of pop art and how they made use of images from all sorts of sources to create a final artwork that was cohesive and able to tell a story.

I was also inspired by woman in pop art works such as those by Roy Lichtenstein, where the women would always look hopeless and helpless.

OVERALL STYLE/THEME:

I wanted to make my images more twisted and disturbing, and for that purpose I made use of a lot of doll images since they are always thought of as being haunted/evil.
