LAYERS

1 STRUCTURE , MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES

low-res

As the task was to combine both Shiau Yu’s and my structure, we decided to make use of layering which was the technique employed in constructing her primary structure.

STRETCHED SURFACE

gum

We had to work within the limited supply of gum we had and hence had to have other materials with could substitute the gum ( oh man should have gotten more gum from Malaysia ).

OMG I REALLY LOVE THE INCONSISTENCY IN OPACITY AND THICKNESS AS WELL AS THE STRETCHED MARKS AND MATTE SURFACE HOHO

Alternative Materials

  • Stocking → which did not work out as the tension it exerts when stretched over the bamboo structure was too strong and caused the contact points to break.
  • Slime → we could not get the right consistency and it was way too glossy and did not retain a stretched surface like how to gum did.
  • Jumping Clay → it was rather opaque and hence could not let much light pass through hence we were restricted to working with the positive and negative spaces. Likewise, it did not offer the texture of a stretched membrane which was what we set out to achieve.

FINAL

Eventually, we still managed to work with the amount of gum we had on hand. YAHOOOOO

Medium: Gum, Bamboo sticks, masking tape

Sadly, our lamp shade only manage to cast soft shadows hence we did not meet the criteria of the job brief where on of the objectives was to create distinct shadow shapes.
