3D | project impossible!!

For our final 3D project, Prof Peter, you overestimated us!!!

It was so hard I feel myself crying everytime I see the product…

Firstly, we were told to each pick a film/book/story and present it to class

And I chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory! 

I presented on a specific scene called “Up and Out”

I chose this scene, as it shows Charlie, being the last kid standing for the tour in Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, and them flying up and out of the factory, and viewing the rest of the spoil kids coming out from the factory, looking wrecked.

Well.. we presented this without knowing what our next project was.
And after presenting, Prof Peter gave us our project brief and we all died. 

We had to come up with a Rube Goldberg machine that links to the story we’ve chosen…

And so.. here’s my progress

Initially, I wanted to add tons of elements and happenings – to show what happened to each of the 4 kids. But.. it was just too tough

It’s hard making one thing work.. how to make a few more?!

Here’s my final!

There was tons of difficulties I faced during the project.
My initial plan was tweaked from my actual as some things couldn’t work.

  1. My Up & Out Pulley

The pulley initial didn’t work, and kept flying out of where it’s supposed to be stationed, resulting in the ball bearing to drop out before it reaches the top!

2. Balloon bursting

Having the balloon bursting was the toughest step. Most of the time, the force of the ball bearing wasn’t strong enough to burst the balloon, and no matter what angle I tried to change, it was still difficult.
Out of the 20 times I tried, only 1 worked (and it was during presentation)

3. Ball bearings kept flying out!! 

While the ball bearings are moving past the ramp, there were moments it kept flying and bouncing out of where it was supposed to be, due to the force, and angle!

4. Pulley of revealing the golden ticket

I initially used a string to release the ticket, but the string didn’t work.
And then, I tried using a clip, with the top clip lightly holding on to it, to ease the job of the ball bearing that’s supposed to make the pulley work.

The success rate of making everything work in one try was 0%.

Up till the presentation itself! IT WORKED FOR THE FIRST TIME 

But very sadly, no one managed to video it down (cries) 

I only have videos of having one work but the other didn’t, or me having to manually push it.

The reason for having this set up was to show the journey of the Charlie and the other kids! It first starts off with the ball bearing moving up and out (in relation to the scene)

Next, the ball bearing has ramps that shows the journey of the kids!

The ramps are coloured according to what the kids that went for the tour were wearing. On its journey down, the ball bearing will hit another ball bearing, which goes in another direction, and it bursts a balloon.

The balloon bursting action signifies how the other spoilt kids went the Chocolate Factory, all spoilt and stuck up, and thinking that they might inherit the whole factory, while in fact, they got taught their lesson, and left in despair. The balloon bursting shows how their little bubble has burst, and there’s no way they can inherit the factory!

And on the other hand, the other ball bearing moves off in another direction, and drops into a “bucket”, which acts as a pulley system, and it releases a Willy Wonka Golden Ticket. 

The release of the golden ticket shows how all these started, as the kids, including Charlie, won the ticket to the tour!

And with only having one ball bearing in the bucket, represents Charlie, for being a good boy, and not spoilt as the rest, leading him to inherit the factory!

With that, this is the end of Foundation 3D!

3D | making useless objects useful

For our second assignment, we were first tasked to bring 2 objects – one of importance, and one that’s useless but you still keep it. 

The 2 objects that I brought was an iPhone & Kangaroo Soft Toy. 

Any idea which category does each item belong to?

Well, the iPhone is the object of importance!

I chose it because, my phone is my life. It contains memories and moments of my life that I’d like to keep forever.
It’s the medium to store because my brain has limited memory (probably only 2GB)

And thus, the Kangaroo Soft Toy was an item that’s useless but I still keep it.
That kangaroo has been with me since I was 4, it has been sitting at my house for 17 years and I still never threw it away!
It was a souvenir from my grandparents when they went to Gold Coast when I was young and… it has been useless since then.
I really dislike soft toys. I find them really useless hahaha.
I’m not the kind of person that sleeps with a bed overloaded with soft toys, thus I think they are just a waste of space and money!!!
But I still keep the kangaroo from my grandparents… hahaha

 

Next, our second task was to make an abstract product out of recycled materials, with reference from the 2 objects we brought previously!

And… call me weird but.. I decided on the material first before deciding what to do HAHA

I wanted to make a product out of chicken bones (yes people I know I am weird okay embrace it) 

Next, I went to consult Prof Peter about what I should do!
He gave me an idea, by constructing an abstract kangaroo out of chicken bones!
So I went ahead with it!

My plan of constructing a kangaroo, was by sculpting one out of long balloons!
Sculpted balloons tend to not look like the actual object – showing abstraction in it!
And how to add the chicken bones into it, I grinded them.

But of course, I first went to collect chicken bones (from food sessions with my friends HAHA and they were all judging me)

Next, I washed and dried them!

After drying, it was time to grind them!

I tried 2 methods – hammering & blending

After the chicken bones process was done, I started with the sculpting of balloons!

I sculpted a kangaroo and stuck paper on it!
I used paper as a cover, as I was afraid that sticking the chicken bones directly might cause the balloon to burst/deflate.

Finally, I stuck the chicken bones onto the paper-balloon kangaroo!
Oh, and one thing! To add to the fluffy/furry texture of the soft toy, I added some fur (credits to my dog, Bailey HAHAHA)

Here’s my end product!

If you’re wondering why is there a tinge of green on the chicken bones, I DID NOT DYE THEM.
IT BECAME MOULDY HAHAHA
It was an accident!!! (but I think it adds to the whole aesthetic of the product)

I know from this angle it looks like a dick but… I didn’t think of it, until my classmates told me. The dick shape happened as I was using a sculpted balloon, and it’s hard to bend it down…

From now on, I’ll take note of my product, making sure it looks normal in every angle!

In conclusion, I guess you can tell I’m pretty weird HAHA

For this project, I went all out on the term recycled. 

I used a bunch of useless items and made them useful (by creating an artwork with it)

This links back to my object, as a soft toy is useless to me, but it’s useful to others!
There’s people who loves them, collects them, and sleeps with them, but that’s just not me. 

Just like the materials I used, they are useless to me but useful to others!

Chicken bones are useless but dogs love bones!!! 

Balloons are useless (because they burst) but kids love them!

Fur are useless to me, but animals need them to keep warmth!

With that, this is the end of the 2nd 3D assignment!

(Prof Peter if you’re reading this, please stop judging me and my kangaroo!!!)

3D | needles, paper, poking

The first assignment of Foundation 3D! 

Who knew…. will led to such a pain (literally)

We were told to make a plane out of thread – which meant sewing!! (i died i have never sewed so much in my life) 

I started out drawing random dots/lines on a piece of construction paper, and went on to sew it with needle and thread!

The first few tries was still alright, as we were new to it! Seeing the end product is pretty satisfying – it looks nice!

After a few more times, I gave up. 

It was tough working with multiple threads and holes, as while sewing, the paper might move and I kept ending up tightening some parts and some parts we looser.

After manymanymany study models that I made, I started doing the final artwork, with the plastic Prof Peter gave.

And here’s my final product! (I tried my best)

4D | vend for health

For our final 4D project, it’s a group work!
i grouped with Gladys & Qiu Wen.

Upon receiving the project brief, we were told to work on an object/location within the compounds of ADM, and we began brainstorming.

Unanimously, we all came up with the same thing!
We decided to work on Vending Machine – the best place to go for our hungry souls. We wanted to make the vending machine interactive, fun and to promote healthy living!

Our idea was planned with the mindset of having a collaboration with Health Promotion Board (HPB)

We will have a vending machine that vends out healthy food, instead of the usual unhealthy snacks and drinks.

For example, instead of having potato chips, we have veggie chips! Or if we have salted peanuts, we can change to almonds instead!

However, the buyer will not know about the change in product, until they selected their choice.

To explain better, we built a small vending machine prototype, with iPad as our machine screen.

The whole process starts when a passer-by walks past the vending machine. It will light up and greet the passer-by, attracting their attention and asking if they want anything. Next up, it will show the panel of food, letting the customer select the choice he/she wants.

Upon pressing, a surprise animation comes out, and we can see the changing animation of the original product changing into a healthier alternative!

It will then vend out the healthier alternative for the customer, ending with a quote to promote healthy living.

During the process of vending, we will have a unique jingle for each product – to keep the customer occupied while waiting.

We intend to have the interface appear more futuristic, while keeping the elements of it quirky and fun.

After presenting to the class about our project, it seemed pretty well-received!
Although it was voiced out that some customers might get angry for not receiving the item they wanted, the issue was resolved, as we intend to place a line of text on the vending machine stating “What you see might not be what you get“. Furthermore, our plan of collaborating with HPB will come into handy, as if used for a HPB roadshow, the audience will know this vending machine is promoting health!

All in all, I am satisfied with how the vending machine worked out! Although we kept changing our ideas, I am glad that we stuck to this final idea!

Initially, we wanted to host a competition between all the food in the vending machine, like a pageant contest. But we realised that the contest has no purpose, and if someone is there to buy food, they might get irritated by the long contest process.

But our final idea, has a clear purpose on promoting health and is a shorter process than our original!

And thankfully, we had a 3D vending machine prototype to aid us with the presentation of our project, if not, it will be difficult trying to explain our idea!

With this, FOUNDATION 4D IS OVER!

4D | sequential imaging

 

The third assignment, we had to shoot 90 images, and show it during class time.

My plan was to do a stop-motion video, with characters I drew!

The concept was a dream, and me fighting in the dream.

It started with me sleeping, and heading into dream mode, where I went to a boxing ring and fought three rounds with male A.

First round – we fought with cooking tools, and I won.
Second round – we fought with a soccer and tennis ball, and he won.
Third and final round – we fought with swords and I won!

So I became the overall winner.

I then left the boxing ring and walked into a pole, and landed in the human world.

My concept was to talk about the social norm between male and females.
Females tend to be spoken about being able to cook better, and males are better at sports, or fights.
Thus, I started with the norm of the female being better at cooking by letting me win the fight and the male defeating me in the throwing of balls.
The last round was crucial as it determined the winner. I wanted to prove that females are just equally as capable as males, and let myself win the round!

But, being able to fight is one, and characteristics of a person is another.
The last part of dream paper me falling into the human world is due to my clumsiness – where I knocked into a lamp post and fell down! (trust me, it always happens)
