Foundation Drawing Final Project

Foundation Drawing Final Project- Diptych

Title: True self

Medium: Pencil, Mix Medium Paper

Synopsis:

Through this diptych drawing, I would like to convey the message of sometimes people tends to put up an enclosed self or a “mask” when they are outside. It is always when we are back home, that we take off the “mask” we had and it is the most comfortable place that we are willing to be/show the true self that we are. Hence, I have represented each of the enclosed self and true self by an enclosed and opened bag at different settings. One situated at outdoor and the other one in an indoor environment(home).

Foundation Drawing Project 1

Foundation Drawing Project 1 – Sequential Image

Title: Growing Up

Medium: Pencil

Synopsis:

A series of sequential images that portrays an internal monologue of myself thinking back and comparing my present with my past memories of the process of growing up.

2D Assignment 3 – FINAL

Assignment 3 – Final

1) Happy strawberry milkshake!

Color scheme: Triadic (red, blue, yellow)

Style: Simplistic vectorized style

In this row, I wanted to portray the excitement that I always have when I go to theme parks while riding rides such as roller coaster. Hence I’ve chosen a more cheerful palette to represent the emotion.

2) Pretty egg tart!

Color scheme: Triadic (Pink, teal, yellow)

Style: Simplistic vectorized style

In this row, I wanted to portray how happy I always feel after shopping and spending on things to pamper myself! Hence I’ve chosen a more cheeky playful palette!

3) Panic pufferfish!

Color scheme: Analogous (red, orange, yellow)

Style: Simplistic vectorized style

In this row, I wanted to portray the fear I had for cockroaches! To me, they are really dangerous creatures. The moment I saw them I legitimately just flee. The second panel was in the shade red to show that the cockroaches are “dangerous” to me, it also portrays how panic I will feel once I saw them. It is like a siren alerting in me! D: Following by the third panel with more of a yellow sunset toned down color from the red to show how relief I felt after running away from the cockroaches.

4) Awkward ostrich!

Color scheme: Analogous (Green, teal, violet)

Style: Simplistic vectorized style

In this row, I wanted to portray how I always felt during Chinese New Year family gatherings. The blues just symbolizes the fear and uneasiness feeling I had when I’m being questioned by them. In the second panel I’ve used more of a blue shade to represent fear, the fear of me needing to entertain their questions. Violet is a mysterious and moody color that just symbolized how I would like to hide myself away from all these questions and attention. Hence in the third panel, I have used violet to show how I hide and camouflage together with the willow in order to avoid them.

WHY CHOSE THIS ART STYLE:

Being from an animation background I have always been doing digital environmental/character painting etc that is more free and instinctive style. I have always seen vectorized style everywhere on posters and have always wanted to try it out. I like how clean and simple the style is yet at the same time the usage of colors and the stylistic style really attracts me. Hence for this project, I wanted to try something different from what I used to do.

DIFFICULTIES ENCOUNTERED:

Firstly, during the brainstorming of ideas, I was too literal. So I have to try my best in thinking out of the box. Secondly, choosing a single color is easy, but choosing a palette/series of colors that has to bring out the narrative/emotion is a totally different story. At first, I was really having difficulties with the pairing of colors and also on how to apply them on to the design I have. Some things just didn’t look right when you change their colors yet at the same time you want to try your best of only sticking to the palette you have. But I’ve learned that it is okay to have other colors in my design and its ok to not stick to colors just within the palette. It is about finding a balance and unify the entire look as a whole. Lastly, the using of new software to create my design that I’m not accustomed to didn’t turn out as expected. I learn to adapt to what I can do within my abilities instead of keeping hogging onto something that may waste even more time or won’t turn out as nice.

TAKE AWAY:

I’ve learned that colors are all about having balance and harmony, but I know I have more to learn from. As colors is really not an easy thing to master. I’ve also learned to have better time management because 12 panels are quite a lot and I really have to pace myself.

2D project 3 – Research & Process

I have always preferred simplistic/minimalistic styles. Hence for this project, I’m driving more towards simplistic style and would like to try my best in portraying emotions with the color used.

STYLE RESEARCH

Here are some of the styles that I’ve researched and would like to try out for this project!

STYLE  1 (In a shape)

STYLE  2 (Minimalistic)

STYLE  3 (Vectorise)

STYLE  4 (Wavy line cuts)

After consultation and some thought through, I have decided to work on the vectorized and wavy line style for my project 3! I used to do more of free style digital painting, hence for this project I would like to try a style that is more clean!

COLOUR RESEARCH

For color wise, I preferred triadic or analogous palettes and would be using them in this project. To me, they are more interesting and they have more variations of colors to experiment/work with as compared to monochromatic or complementary palettes! ><

Color palette 1

(Strawberry + roller coaster = Strawberry Milkshake)

Going to a theme park, sitting a roller coaster has always been a very fun experience for me. I used to drag my friend to go for the ride with me again and again because it was so fun! Hence, for this row of panels, I have chosen a more cheerful pastel palette to bring out the excitement and happy mood of the narrative. It will be triadic colors (red, blue, yellow)!

Color palette 2

(Egg + Shopping for baking cosmetics = Pretty egg tart)

To me, shopping is also an enjoyable/happy experience and retail therapy works really well for me! HAHA! SO for this row of panels, I have chosen triadic colors of red, blue, yellow to work with as well. However, having a slight twist of shades to it making it a little bit more vibrant than the previous palette and red will be in a more pinkish shade to give that feminine/shopping feel to it!

Color palette 3

(Pufferfish + Seeing cockroaches = Poof pufferfish that fly away)

For this row of narratives, initially, I was quite lost and not knowing what sort of colors should I go for to portray the emotion of fear. After researching about emotions and colors, blue seems to be the color that represents fear. However, using blueish palettes to bring out how I felt when I see cockroaches just doesn’t seem to fit LOL. BECAUSE I SWEAR I WILL REALLY FREAK OUT SO BADLY IF I EVER SEE ONE OR HAVE TO BE TRAP TOGETHER WITH ONE (real-life experience :”( ) So, in the end I decided to go with red to show danger! HAHA by using the analogous palette of red, orange, yellow.

Color palette 4

(Ostrich + Chinese New Year gathering = Camouflage with willow)

For this row, I wanted to show the feeling of awkward and uneasiness. During Chinese New Year, family gatherings are just not very pleasant when your relatives just start asking about your studies, future and love life. So, it kinda felt really uneasy being put in such situation and I would feel some sort of fear of being asked by them. So I’ve chosen the color blue and purple to show those feelings by using the analogous palette of blue, green, purple! 🙂

PROCESS

First Brainstorming session

Initially before the consultation, I thought this project needs to be abstract and make sense out of it, but apparently not and we could go as crazy as we can with the narrative of this project! It is really cool because such concept is quite new to me haha. Same thing again I guess many of us encounter the same problem of being too literal again with what the fruit/animal we choose, limiting ourselves with their abilities ending up as a certain expected outcome. Same goes for me.

Idea 1- Strawberry goes to theme park happily with parents

Idea 2- Octopus attending CNY gathering and got questioned by relative to the extent it wants to hide and camouflage.

Idea 3- Pufferfish + shopping = Poof up pufferfish unable to fit into the clothes she bought

Idea 4- UNKNOWN

Second Brainstorming session

After the second session, the ideas is more confirmed. I’ve also changed some stuff along the way as I want to make it more relatable to my own experience. Some of the above sketches are some of the exploration of ideas that I have. In the end, I have settled with some of the situation and emotions I want to portray!:)

Idea 1- Strawberry + roller coaster = Strawberry Milkshake (Excited)

Idea 2- Egg + Shopping for baking cosmetics = Pretty egg tart (Happy)

Idea 3- Pufferfish + Seeing cockroaches = Poof pufferfish that fly away (Fear)

Idea 4- Ostrich + Chinese New Year gathering = Camouflage with willow (Uneasy)

Third session

Only manage to do up 1 row of panels 🙁 Continued with the second row in class. Initially, my plan was to try 2 styles one of it using photoshop the other would be the illustrator (because it is easier to do the wavy style in illustrator).

Ms. Shirley show and taught me how to do it in illustrator in a really efficient way and I was totally mind blown and really thankful of! As I was more farmiliar with photoshop and never really touched illustrator before so this is my first time doing it.

(When I try it…)

I tried replicating the style that I have researched but it just doesn’t turn out as nice as the references that I had and I didn’t like the outcome of it. Also at the same time, wanting all my 4 rows to look unified and harmonious as a whole when being put together. I decided to just stick to one style (vectorized style) throughout all the 4 rows of panels.

At first, I wasn’t sure of how I can pull off the color schemes in each equation. However, throughout doing the panels I have figured out that since my style belongs to the simple and clean kind. I could make my background color the individual color I have chosen in my palette and then from each palette I focus on that one color and further input other colors into it. When the whole equation is being put up together, the color scheme eventually worked out and manage to unify with each other!:D
