There were many famous ancient Chinese myths that talked about Romance; such as ‘The Butterfly Lovers’, ‘The Legend of the White Snake’, and the ‘Cowheard and the Weaver’. Most of them involved Forbidden Love, and also Heaven’s intervention (known as ’天 ‘). Interestingly, although situations didnt allow the two lovers to be together- these stories always ended with Heaven making it possible. It showed the Chinese ancient belief that as long as Heaven blesses the romance- no matter what the odds, their love would be made possible.

This pattern depicts two worlds side by side, with repeating textures and colours in them representing the desire between the two Lovers- and the golden glow represents the work of Heaven slowly descending and filling the separation between them, connecting the two Lovers. This banner celebrates a romance that has Heaven’s Mandate.

PAD: Heaven’s Mandate – Media Wall

Media Wall

Chosen song:

Quite relevant because the song is titled “Thy will be done” a phrase in the bible that submits to the will of God. This phrase was uttered in a very hard time by Jesus in doing the Father’s will.

Yet, If Heaven’s Mandate/ God’s will is in line with our desires… How precious such a thing is, because this means a ‘100% go’.

To me, the spiritual is a very sacred thing. God has always the final say. I desire to do and submit to his will, so how wonderful if it is in line with our desires!

Pattern, Art, Design (Design Rationale)

This  module, the topic for this project is ‘Fairytale.’

We had to pick 3 fairytales and do a pattern on the fairytale. I had researched for both western fairytales and eastern ones, and I decided to settle with Chinese Fairytales, or Myths.

I remember that there were many famous romance myths that I had heard of long ago. After looking through, I had selected these three romance myths.

The Butterfly Lovers

The Butterfly Lovers is a Chinese legend which tells a tragic love story between a pair of famous lovers- Liang Shanbo and Zhu Yingtai. Their love story is considered as the Chinese version of Romeo and Juliet.

The story happened in the Eastern Jin Dynasty (317–420). In order to pursue her studies, Zhu Yingtai  disguised herself as a man and decided to go to Hangzhou for further study. During her trip she met Liang Shanbo, a scholar from Kuaiji, they soon became good friends and then sworn brothers. They studied together in Songshan Academy in Hangzhou for the next three years and Zhu gradually fell in love with Liang. But Liang did not know that Zhu was a woman and failed to notice it.

One day Zhu had to go home as her father missed her so much. She frequently hinted that she loved Liang when seeing her off, however Liang was an honest and unassuming man and did not understand her love confession. But under, Zhu professed that she would be a match-maker to introduce one of his sisters to Liang. However, Liang’s family was poor and he did not arrive at Zhu’s family on time. Later Liang headed to Zhu’s family to propose marriage. Unfortunately, it was too late and Zhu had been betrothed by her farther to Ma Wencai, a son of an high local official. The two had no way to change it but to shed tears face to face. They promised at parting that even if they could not stay together during their lifetime, they hoped to be buried in the same tomb after death.

Later Liang was ordered to govern a county, however he missed her so much that he became ill and finally died. Hearing his death, Zhu vowed to die for love after him. On her marriage with Ma, Zhu went to Liang’s tomb to pay respect to him on the way. She was very grieved and prayed the heaven to open up the tomb. Then miracle appeared, the tomb opened as she hoped and Zhu leaped into it immediately, and then the tomb soon closed. Later on, the lovers turned into a pair of butterflies and the two would never to be separated again.

VISCOM1//PROJECT 2: Get Well Soon Card [FINAL]

In this project, we were tasked to create a ‘get well soon’ card for Ng Teng Fong hospital. It had to have some element of either die-cut or 3D attribute to it. For me, my card wasn’t really developed quickly and started my concept off an image that I saw in the past.

It was an illustration of a cat holding a needle, and stitching herself up, in a dance and graceful like manner. The owner was drawing this to express that her cat was on the road to recovery.  The idea of the stitching of the wound and the ‘bandage’ that was to hold the card’s outside. However, when presented, because I didn’t have the image, my classmates and mentor interpreted it quite very differently.

They brought up very important points like if the plaster/stitches are on the cover of the card, does it mean that when they open the card it is like opening a wound? Or the other way round, if done correctly, would mean that they are well enough to remove the ‘bandage.’

While struggling with visualizing my concept, I decided to change my idea. Of course, I drew my idea from my own feedback for one of my classmate’s works- About hands on the heart!! So here was my rough:

I thought of this idea because I felt like it was reassuring- like someone placing his or her hand on my heart to comfort or show true concern, I wanted my card to have that kind of therapeutic effect- Of really caring and reassuring.

Therefore, my design is showing a nurse at the front placing her hands on her heart, and when you open, you realize that it is a patient’s heart too.

Inside, another male nurse is bidding goodbye to the patient!

VISCOM1//PROJECT 2: COMBATING ZIKA OUTBREAK [2/3]

From this image, I had come up with ideas for also using fruits in my poster. I think fruits are a very good way of portraying people as vulnerable and weak; which we really are- The message of the poster is to remind the people that Zika can strike anyone and each one is not spared.

Spatial Design: Project 1 – Mapping Gillman Barracks

Lecturers: Laura Miotto & Regina Moeller

Title: “Hidden Gems Map”
Concept: Seeing the extraordinary in the ordinary, highlighting the overlooked.

Content: This map highlights the unique and overlooked things in nature, such as wildlife and plants.

In this Project for the Module Spatial Design, we experience mapping for a real location; Gillman Barracks. We were told to interpret the map in any way we liked; and make our map special by highlighting the different elements of the place.

We worked in groups and with other people. Here are their names!

Amanda Lu Pei Yu – Who drew and compiled the whole map
Yang KaiXin – Who drew the icons and the buildings
Nina Kong – Who sourced for material and the handle of the leaf

As for me, the role I played was providing the concept of the “Hidden Gems Map” and also the idea of the 5 sided leaf. I came up with the prototype, which later Amanda refined. I also did the little illustrations of the wildlife.
