Reflection:

During the process. I did face some difficulties for the idea forming and editing. So I made different drafts but luckily come up with the final. I am appreciate the process as it is a chance to improve myself.

 

F2D 2 Project 1: Process and Research

The future job I wish do are fragrance evaluator (given up),
astronomer, cellist, chef. So here are my sketches.

0213_2My future job as fragrance evaluator was given up, because of some problems with the composition.

My first future job is: astronomer

For the second draft of sketch, I tried to substitute my name into physics equation,(use physics equation to form my name), but my classmate said they would misunderstood that I am a mathematician. So I decided to use stars to form my name, which is the second image.

But I found that a bit boring. Meanwhile, I noticed that the background couldn’t really remind people of starry sky. So I changed the background.

In order to give a hint that I am an astronomer, I looked for the image of astronomer with telescopes. Also the direction of the telescope will  guide the audience to focus on the physical equation.

Here is my first image.

1So the final image of astronomer include the symbol of starry sky, physical equation, man and telescopes.

 

My second future job is: judge

Initially I wanted to hind my name inside some objects like gavel and balance, but it was not that obvious. So the first draft was given up.

I searched for image of judge, the judge’s wig gave me inspiration. Then I decided to use wig form my name, which is the second draft of sketch.

Here is my second image.

I chose the color of brown as background in contrast with the foreground white to make my name stand out.

2So the final image of judge included the symbol of wig, gavel, balance and book.

I decided to use music notes to form my name.

free-abstract-sound-waves-hd-wallpapers-1920x1200For background, I wanted to use sound wave to give a hint that I am a musician.  The problem for using the first image is that the background is too bright, interfere the deliver of visual information. So I use the second image instead. But the problem comes again, the x and y axes are too black, and interfere the image. I did try change the background color. But finally find a way to solve the problem.

Here is my third image. (Sorry I don’t know why but the color (especially background color) is weird when I upload it onto oss)

Anyway, the background color which is the cold color, in contrast with the foreground (cello) which is the warm color, to give more energy to the image.

Initially I wanted to use different food to form my name, but I felt that it was a bit boring. Instead of using English name, I decided to use Chinese name. I choose one Chinese character within my name, which is Jing “婧”. I looked for different version of “婧”.

I noticed that the 篆体 version of “婧” seems to be more interesting than the 楷体 version of “婧”. It is more dynamic and it flows. It is curly like spaghetti. So I decide to make the image of a plate of food with my name “婧” hidden like spaghetti inside.

So the final image of chef included the symbol of spaghetti, cabbage, broccoli and beef steak.

F4D 2 project 1: Fan-fiction

(This story is written based on Natasha’s Virtual Reality Story that she created. I used her story’s essences and created this fan-fiction of mine.)

 

Part 1

 

INT. CENTRAL LIBRARY- MORNING

 

A little girl was reading a story book about traveler. She was excited about it then turned to her mum.

“Mama, does traveler really exist?”

The mother smiled to the girl.

“I don’t know darling. I have never see them before.”

“Look at this mum”. The girl was attracted by one of the image in the book. “Travelers are gift!” The girl shouted loudly.” I want a traveler as Christmas gift mum!” She was too excited that her neck turned red.

“I wish I can give that for you honey, but I am not able to.” The mum said.

At a corner of the library. A boy heard this conversation. He’s face was pale. He lowered his hat so that nobody could see his blue feather around his ear.

“That is the nature of human”

The boy was shocked by the voice, his face was even paler.

“Calm down, boy.”

The boy raised up his courage, then raises his head. He saw an old man in front of him.

“Don’t be scared…” The old man got closer to the boy then spoke besides the boy’s ear.

“Because…” The old man smiled. “I am also a traveler.”

 

Part 2

 

INT. CAFE- MORNING

 

The boy seated on the chair. He couldn’t stop looking at the old man.

“He is a traveler! Same as me!” The boy told himself. He couldn’t control his excitement.

People seldom heard about travelers in this century. Those special race of people who have ability to ability to turn back time were being largely captured by human. They are treated like gifts, slaves and being killed, only a few of travelers stayed alive. In order to protect themselves, some of them escape from cities, some of them hide in the city.

“You seems to be happy to meet me” The old man said.

The boy smiled, but soon he looked nervous by kept observing the surrounding.

“No worried, this café is a club for traveler. It is safe here.” The man noticed his nervous, he gave the boy a cup of coffee.

“As a traveler, what do you think about yourself?” he asked.

“Mom said rewind (time-travel) is the ability that human never have. It is a gift that god gives us.” The boy said it proudly.

“I used to think it that way too.” The old man signed. He looked at a certain point in the air as if there are something there.

“But the truth is that, rewind is not a gift, it will never ever be a gift. It is a punishment.”

It is summer, the café is hot, but the boy felt as cold as it is winter. He could imagine his blood became red ice. He wanted to speak, but found himself hard to express. Before he made sound, the old man said something again.

“By the way, my name is Abel, nice to meet you.”

 

Part 3

 

INT. CAFE- MORNING

 

“Those people kidnapped both of us. The man shot me. Eden was too scared to move. I had no choice but snapped my seal with her hands. Before I heard the next shot, I was gone.”

“Then?” The boy asked curiously. “When did you find her again?

“Never.” The old man said.

“What?” The boy was shock.

“I couldn’t find her from then on. I was alone for 60 years.”

“Is she dead?” The boy soon realized that he asked a silly question. The Traveler’s lifespan is bound to the lifespan of his host. If Abel is alive, Eden must be alive.

“I traveled to the past thousand times, before we were kidnapped and before the man shot me, trying to change the past.

The boy’s facial expression became strange when he heard his. He hesitated for a few second, then said: “Don’t you know that…”

“Yes, I know.” The old man looked tiring. “One of the theory for time travel says that…”

“Even when parties travel back in time, the future they left cannot be changed.” The boy helped him said that out.

Silence…

“Rewind is not a gift, it is a punishment.” Now I believe that what you said. The boy signed.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

F4D Meta: Fashion

For fashion, I am inspired by the fashion during Jin dynasty. Here is the background information of Jin dynasty.

“The Jin dynasty distinguished as the Sima Jin and Liang Jin, was a Chinesesdynasty, empire, and era traditionally dated from ad 265 to 420. It was founded by Sima Yan son of Sima Zhaowho was made Prince of Jinand posthumously declared the founder of the dynasty. It followed the Three Kingdomsperiod (220-280 AD), which ended with the conquest of Eastern Wuby the Jin.”

Here are some costume during that dynasty.

During Jin Dynasty, government officials have their official robe depending on the hierarchy from official rank 1 to grade 9 (descending). Officials above rank 5 wear purple robe. Officials  in rank 6 or below grade 6 wears red and green robe. I am inspired from this.

In my world, the costume will be similar to the style of costume during Jin dynasty. For government officials, S wears green robes, SS wears red robes and SSS wears purple robes.

 

F4D 2 Meta: Authority

For authority, I am inspired by the animation Gangsta

In this animation, those people who called “twilight” has the superpower include 5 grade: S, A, B, C, D (descending). I am inspired from this.

  In my world. People’s superpower is from SSS, SS, S, A, B, C (descending) . The society’s hierarchy is determined by people’s degree of power. C will enter lower class, B will enter middle class, A will enter upper class. Those people who have power above S will  work in government. SSS will have the strongest authority.

  Most people don’t have emotion connection to their family. But for those people  who have emotion connection to their family, would like do training to increase their superpower. By increase their superpower, their will be able to enter higher hierarchy in society and then provide better quality of life for their family.  However, once their power and social status change, government will reassign them into a new family. So here is the dilemma. In order to find out the secret about how exactly the government assign their citizens into different family, some people increase their superpower above S then work for government. But those people who work for government will lose their memory, of course, lose their family. This is the opportunity cost.

F4D2 Meta: Home

Hey everyone. Basically, I am inspired by the animation BLEACH, there is a place called Rukongai ( Wandering Soul City). It is where souls live when they arrive in Soul Society. Souls dwell until they are reincarnated into the human world.

The Human World and Soul Society are parallel to each other and are two sides of the same coin. Families separated by death are rarely reunited in the Soul Society unless they arrive in Soul Society together. People live nestled together like a family of strangers.

“Rukongai is full of families that are not related by blood.” Here is what interested me. How can people become families even without blood relation?

Therefore, I decide to create a world. In this world, all families are without blood relations, what bonds them together is their powers. The Government  defines different types and levels of powers, then assign their citizens to group into different families. Citizens don’t have the right to choose their families. Moreover, once some of the citizen’s power growth,  the government will evaluate his or her power, then reassign them to new family according to their power. Should we call it a “family”? Should we call it a “home’?  That is the dilemma and irony of this world.

F2D Project3: Ego

Inspiration

I get inspiration from some images on printest. 04For this image I got inspiration from traditional Chinese architecture expecially Gugong in Beijing.

12For this image I got inspiration from porker and Japanese toy.

Explanation

My first series of images are me+making decision=confused. Because I am a undecide person. It is difficult for me to make decison. That’s why I create this.

My second series of images are me+see elephant in the dark room= turn on the light. Elephant in the dark room usually means people avoid and not to solve some problem because of some reason. But I hope to be  a problem solver. Initial the elephant was in the dark room. So I turn on the light to let everyone see the elephant.

My third series of images are me+imbalance= balance. In daily we always need to balance things. For example, students might need to balance between study and play. Hence I tried to show the importance of balance here.

My fourth series if images are me+atmosphere=affected. Because everyone will be infulenced by the environment they are in and the atmosphere they feel. I use poker to show “porker face” and use the color of black and white,to show me without influenced. Then I use color in the second and third image to show that me was affected.

F4D Project 3: Genre and Narrative – the Net

Concept

Storyline

The story is about a girl who is unwanted by her father and stepmother, got comfort from a online stranger. She decided to meet the stranger, but kidnapped by the stanger, then she struggled and tried to get out of the place.

Inspiration

Our film is based on “Hansel and Gretel “. Hansel and Gretel is about two young brother and sister kidnapped by a witch living deep in the forest in a house constructed of cake and confectionery. The two children save their lives by outwitting her.

We try to add a modern twist to the fairy tale.

Firstly,  we designs a online hoax instead of a candy hoax based on modern background.

Archetypal Character

 Secondly, we try to combine two characters Hansel and Gretel’s personalality into one character. In original story, Gretel is cowardly while Hansel is brave. In our new story, we design Gretel to be cowardly at first, but with the development of the story, the character growth to be a brave person.

 However, we still try to keep the concept of the original fairy tale.

1.Exposition The stepmother and father decide to abandon the kids in the woods. Gretel’s first phone call, her father doesn’t allowed her to go back home.
2. Inciting Incident The stepmother and father abandon the children again. Hansel and Gretel failed to find home. Gtetel’s second phone call. Her father doesn’t want to visit her.
3. Rising Action 3.Hansel and Gretel  discover a in a house constructed of cake and confectionery. Hungry and tired, the children begin to eat the rooftop of the candy,  the children enter the house which belongs to a witch. The online stranger comforts Gretel online, they decide to meet.
4. Climax The witch locks Hansel in a cage, and forces Gretel into becoming a slave. The online stranger kidnaps Gretel.
5.Resolution Gretel kills the witch then frees Hansel from the cage Gretel struggles then gets free from the rope, found her weapon and be prepared to againsts the stranger.

Challenges

Shot Compositions

For shoting, it is hard to take different range of shots at the same time. So we shot our film in the order of  long-rang shots, full figure shots, mid-range shots, close-up shots. Then combine them together during editing.

For lighting, we have a scene (which is the last scene) in a dark room. We turned of most of the light but just leave one light. But we soon realized that if the light is too dim, it will be difficult for us to shot, so we decide to shot in a normal light first, then change the color during editing later.

Editing Techniques

We have long-rang shots, full figure shots, mid-range shots, close-up shots in order, so what we need to do is to combine them.

For color correction, we set the color into black and white to represent the past, then set the normal color but with less saturation to represent the present. Initially we wanted to use white subtitle, but we realized that white is unclear expecially when some scene are black and white, so we change the subtitle into yellow.

For sound, in order to avoid noise, we delect the initial sound of dialogue during shotting, then re-record it in a quite place. Moreover, when there is a dialogue, we will lower the volume of background music, so that two sounds won’t mix together.

For background music, initially we used the horror music, but doesn’t really fit out film. Our finally background music is called “Heart cry”by Drehz, which is actually a song that usually used for contemporary dance. We choose this song because it has different layers, which gives the feeling of gradation when the story develops.

Gretel stares at the reply for a long time and smiles.

Gretel takes the phone then put down the phone. Finally, she makes a phone call to her father.

GRETEL

(Carefully but hopefully)

Daddy, please, can you visit me during holiday?

FATHER

I am afraid not, darling.

Gretel stared at Wilson’s name on the computer screen for a long time. Finally she types.

GRETEL

I don’t know you, but I really want to meet you……Should we meet, Wilson?

She hesitates for a long time, but finally clicks: “Send.”

WILSON

Sure.

Gretel looks hapy.

FADE OUT

INT.SOFA AREA-AT NIGHT

GRETEL

(Crying)

My father doesn’t want me to go home, because my stepmother doesn’t like me, what should I do?

Gretel feels cold and hugs herself, Wilson takes out his jacket and passes it to Gretel. Gretel cries for a while then raises her head, Wilson passes a tissue to her.

WILSON

(Softly)

It’s okay, everything will be alright.

Gretel uses the tissue to wipe her tear, but stars coughing. Wilson passes aa cup of water to Gretel. Gretel drinks the water, then looks at Wilson.

GRETEL

(Dizzily)

Wilson, I feel sleepy.

WILSON

(Smiles and hugs Gretel)

Have a nap.

FADE OUT

INT.DARK ROOM-AT NIGHT

Gretel wakes up. Looks at the surrounding and feels scared. Lower her head. Remember  her father’s saying. Slowly raises her head, looks determined ( Hansel part). She clams down. Find a tool, struggle then gets away from the ropes (takes a long time). She hears the sound of steps. She is scared again. She looks around and notices another tools under human skeleton, hestitates but plucks up the courage to picks up the tools. She hears the sound of steps. She stands besides the door, grabs the tool then slowly raises it with determination.
