Double Vision Trip?

Did i obtain a double vision from this trip or was i actually knocked out and seeing double visions?

To be honest, this trip was too experimental for me to understand most of the films.

The first film i watch was “Where’s Francis?” 2 men are buried under the ground, showing only the head conversing with each other. It reminded me of this ridiculously funny scene in Shanghai noon.

I can see in this film that the the two men are actors still waiting for the director to yell cut after thirty years. The whole concept was so absurd and ridiculously entertaining. After reading the brochure, i realised Francis is the man that directed Apocalypse Now (set in Vietnam but shot in Philippines). This film is to tell us how war victims are often forgotten. I find the concept brilliantly executed. I like how everything look so lighthearted like a comedy but it reveal a deeper intention and tell the situation that war victims faced.

The variety of shots used is pretty limited. Wipe pan is used when they are conversing. Close up and medium shots were used to show one or both of them talking. I learn that with a strong content and dialogues, the audience can also feel the emotions in the film.

The next film that i watched was “Nailed”. In the beginning, my classmates were making a bunch of noise when they were watching this film and when i looked over i saw a religious scene of a lady having her feet stabbed by nail. Ruyi was telling my classmates who were horrified the reason behind it. Apparently the Catholic devotees is nailed as a re-enactment of Jesus Christ’s crucifixion on Good Friday. I was appalled. At the same time i was intrigued by the scenes so i decided to watch it from the start.

The narration were muffled and i didn’t manage to stay through. However i do noticed the artists like to juxtaposes human with animal. There are two shots: the pig is being tortured to death is juxtaposed with a baby. I thought of the pig is like a baby because it can only scream and cry and you have no idea what it is saying, but it is suffering. Reincarnation was also brought to my mind. As there is this phrase, ” a life for a life”. Hence i thought the pig being slaughtered for religious purpose gained a new life as a baby because it died for a good course. It is very far-fetched but yeah that’s what i thought. Another shots being juxtaposed are the ox (or was it water buffalo) working hard stamping on the field and a man waking up from the soil and stamp the ground. As this is a film about religious, maybe the artist’s intention is to convey that humans are no different from animals until they experienced the pain that Jesus felt. It is shown at the later part where devotees got crucified which i didn’t stay through to watch.

I went to research about the crucifixion in Philippines and found that the highest record of a person being crucified is around 27 times and he was given the role of Christ. undecided

Yi(t) Ling Movie Trailer

Our group or as known as Ling Teh Kam-pany (Derived from our names), consists of Kam Yit Ling, Clara Teh Ke Wei and myself, Seng Yi Ling. And here, we present to you our very own movie trailer for our final 4D assignment of Year 1 Semester 1…

Movie Title: Yi(t) Ling
Genre: Fantasy + Psychological Horror

3 Act Structure

Beginning (Act 1)

Yi Ling is a shy and quiet person. Once focused on a task, she is far from being distracted. Sadly, she is ostracized by her classmates as she seemed rude and had a stuck up attitude. Her classmates disliked and gave her a hard time. Until one day, her new classmate Queenie decided to befriend her.

Rising action

To her dismay, Queenie sold Yi Ling out to fit in as she got ostracized by their classmates when she was seen hanging out with Yi Ling. She ganged up with her classmates and forced Yi ling into room rumored to be haunted for fun’s sake. When Yi Ling managed to open the door after much struggling, she was transported to another dimension where there were doors which led her to places as a ghost tailed her.

Middle (Act 2)

Encounters with the ghost tells Yi Ling that the ghost wants her to stay in this dimension and never go back. The spirit was motivated by loneliness which both characters shared and was enraged when Yi Ling refused to stay.

Ending (Act 3)

The ghost is in actual fact a manifestation as her alter ego. The other dimension filled with doors was a symbolism of change Yi Ling faced in her life. And the only way Yi Ling can get back to her world is by killing a part of her: Her Alter Ego.

We watched many horror movie trailers as a form of research and shared our experiences and views on past movies we’ve watched that could be of assistance to our movie trailer! 🙂

Crimson Peak (The Ghost was constantly present, but not shown blatantly.)

Black Swan (Killing of her Alter Ego)

The Babadook (Ghost was a manifestation of main character’s fears.)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5WQZzDRVtw

The Boy ( Placement of background music.)

Placement of background music was very on point here – it had us 3 covering our ears and half shutting our eyes in fear to watch the trailer. The initial beginning of the trailer has a soft mellow piano tune when the female lead approaches the mansion, and the drastic change of music when they revealed The Boy to her sent shivers down our spine. The sudden change of music instantly let the viewers know what atmosphere the trailer aims to set: Simple life of the girl -> Horror of her lifetime.

Blair Witch Project (Handheld camera shots to show desperation and fear.)

Coraline (Travelling into another dimension, and use of different colour for different world)

In Coraline, the saturation of her world is low and colours are dull like the reality she lives in. In the other dimension, she enters a door where saturation is high and colours are vibrant and lively like the life she yearns to live in.

Editorial

Blackout shots – Blackout transition shots are a recurring motif. It is used as a representation of time lapse. When used in our trailer, the following scene will be of another place and another time. In addition, length of transition creates suspense and indicate a tonal shift in the scene.

Color  – Adjusting of color to establish different dimensions were used. In the real world, colors are more saturated and was brighter; whereas in the other dimension, saturation was kept to a minimum and brightness was decreased to emphasize on the stark differences in both worlds, so as to make it more spooky.

Background music and audio – Music were used to build up the anticipation and gives the audience the emotion they ought to be feeling a specific sections of the trailer. For instance, mellow piano music at the start to give a soothing feeling, and high pitched fast paced music at the climax when main character was being chased down.

Parallel Universe – At the scene (0:45) where the main character exit onto the parking lot, the composition has a mirror image  reflection on the extreme left of the shot, to enhance the parallel universe feeling.
Staircase scene shows main character running up the stairs away from the Ghost, but she remains on the same level as the stairway    in the other dimension is an infinite loop (0:58 – 1:09) .

Shots Established

Still Shot was used at the start of the trailer, where a serene feeling is given of the school environment. (0:09)

Fast Pan + POV at the scene where main character looks around perplexed at the new dimension she entered (0:49) .

Dolly In and Out scenes are present at the scene to show the ominous door (0:30) and the scene where zooming in on her expression to show that  she is perplexed after opening the door to another location (0:48).

Mid-shot was used at the scene where main character is pleading the classmates to let her out. (0:40)

Handheld shot when the main character is running up the stairs. (1:01)

Low Angle Shot at the scene where 3 Classmates (Dawin, Jon, JiaQi – Thanks guys!) were gossiping about the main character. (0:22)

Trucking Shot was used when classmates (Thanks Queenie and Debbie!)were pushing the main character inside the haunted room. (0:35)

Close-up Shot was used when main character was wrenching at the door handle when she is locked in (0:41). And the part where the main character’s phone is ringing (1:25).

Canted angle shot are present when phone is dropped amidst the struggle when pushing the main character inside the haunted room (0:37), and the scene where the ghost is wrenching the door to be opened (1:14). This is to create drama and suspense.

Slow Pan is used at the transition scene where the main character looks into the mirror and the reflection looks back at her (1:39- 1:42).

Challenges Faced

  • We tend to forget that the trailer is 2 mins and thus, eventually worry that our trailer does not convey our plot properly; but at the same time we don’t want our trailer to be a 2 min summary of the movie (given that it is a MOVIE trailer).
  • Finding an appropriate location which conveyed the intended feeling was not easy. Our main character’s setting is in a school environment and hence the school was used. But for the horror aspect we had to find narrow and dark areas within campus and that was difficult. Given that we even trespassed ongoing construction sites in school.
  • Suitable. background. music. was. really. hard. to. find.
  • Miss Ruyi mentioned that our logo and lobby music was not very appropriate for our Horror trailer, but our group felt that the logo was a good representation of our efforts as a group and the elevator music gave it a merry feeling. This will create the drop of emotions when the horror aspects of our trailer is revealed. 🙂

Feedbacks and Critiques
  • Bar chart results obtained from Ms Ruyi’s Google survey for our group were more towards the positive end of the spectrum.  (thank you!)
  • Sound effect can be toned down to hear narration of the alter ego better in the end.
  • The starting music doesn’t match with the rest of the trailer , perhaps a non jazzy music that foreshadows the story?
  • Show that the alter ego and the main character are two compelling personalities/ people by including more interactive scenes between the 2. Perhaps by voice over of dialogue between 2 person or a struggle between the 2.
  • Yi Ling can act! (Yi Ling says thank you >~< )
  • There were different shots to show the mood of the character.

Reflections

In this project, i touched on most of the roles except for editing. I enjoyed being the cameraman the most. Trying out different camera angle, using different methods to achieve that effect, i felt that i got connected with the werid goofy side of me. There is only me and the camera. I like to capture things i like with my camera and keep it as a memory. I can openly take videos of my teammates and classmates without letting them know about my feelings. This movie trailer will be my treasured memory for this class.

Also how big is the chances for the title of my first movie trailer to be a combination from Yi Ling and my name? I find it so cool! I can brag to my friends that i have made a movie trailer about myself and show them that. They would be tricked with the opening and then after they watch finish, i can’t imagine their faces hahahaha! Earpieces is a must to enhance the horror experience.laughing

If u guys have any constructive criticism or comments that we’ve missed out, do leave a feedback down below! WE APPRECIATE IT

Me, My Blood in Colours

I had a lot of fun and sufferings in this project but if i looked at the photos, its all worth it! *with tears in my eyes*

I have finally created an Instagram because i’m quite happy with the photos i took. The first few posts will be on them! Follow me @ y.up.g.downv if u guys want to see it! Haha!

Without further ado, these are my previous posts of ego projects for better understanding on my project:

Concept and Artists Research

Disastrous Day and Video

So let’s get down to my longest post ever!

Everyone of us is unique. We certainly don’t fit into the characteristics of our blood group sometimes. This whole compositions show the contrast between my blood type like how i’m expected to behave according to the characteristics of B blood group and how i will actually react in that situation.

Colour Representation of me and my blood type

ME- Blue

I have always feel that i’m a passerby in my life. There is no where I truly belong. Rather than giving a form to me, I have chosen to represent myself in blue hue to show traces of me that i have been here. Blue is limitless like the sky, so carefree, relaxing and deep like the ocean, sad and lonely. Whenever u saw blue in the reality rows of compositions, you have spot me!

B- blood group- Yellow

People with b- blood type are generally creative, carefree, passionate and live in the moment. I feel that yellow represent them the best because it is the colour of sunshine. It show joy, happiness, spontaneous and energy.

Compositions

With reference to the blood comic personality, People with B-type blood tend to ignore teacher’s instruction to stay behind the line. They would simply cross the line even though the teacher is looking. They are rebellious and don’t confine to rules. This is how the narration goes for this row: With b-type’s creativity, they will think of ways to have fun. Asking them to obey rules is impossible. Instead, rules become their playground. They will break rules for fun to get reactions. Therefore they are always rebellious.

slide1

Medium: Food dye, water, medicine droppers and transparency paper

Process: Food dye mixed with water and dripped using a medicine dropper. To have a bright yellow background, yellow transparency paper is put on top of a board. Water is added on the surface of the paper so that sculptures can be created when liquid is dripped on the puddle. It’s the same for the blue composition except it is done in a bowl.

B Type’s Creativity: The juxtaposition of the pillar, crater and tiny water droplet at the top of the crater is a rare image captured in that split second. Creativity is essentially a burst of ideas flowing out in that moment. There are different forms within that circle giving the impression that lots of ideas is going inside b type’s mind. Following the darker orange hue from the droplet to the crater, crater to pillar and finally going to the edge of the circle. It tell the whole process of brainstorming like how an idea branches out into much more ideas and ultimately having a solid concept and all that is left is to execute it. Orange is used to show the creativity and energy.

Obey Rule: If u ask them to obey rule, they will simply disregard it. The pillar signify rule. The vertical line of the pillar express authority and rigidness like how rules is inflexible and demand people to follow. The pillar is straight and tall yet very thin. It relates to how b type think about rule. Living in Singapore, the city of rules, the pillar become very tall, containing a list of things to comply. However, they don’t care about it. Hence, the pillar is fragile and broken at the top. Dark blue is used to show the seriousness of rule.

Rebellious: Being rebellious, they can’t be control and will break through anything that is holding them back. The water droplet having the motion line of it flying upwards expresses the freedom it felt from escaping out of the thick walls of rules that is trapping it.

For each composition, monochromatic is used to depict how B type people feel and react in a rule setting where everything is systematic and follow one order. Hence a single colour. However if you look at it in a big picture, the 3 compositions form a complementary colour scheme. It show their defiant to rule. If you want them to do this way, they will react differently from your expectation.

For those who is questioning where’s yellow since it supposed to be the representation colour for B-type. Isn’t orange a mix of red and yellow? 😉 A combination of courage and creativity by B.

slide2

In contrast to the expectation of how i’m supposed to fit into the stereotype mold of my blood type characteristics, the real me is a lot more tamer and serious.

Medium: Food dye, medicine droppers and water

My Shyness: I’m a very shy person.  I will always be hiding in my shell and putting up walls against people to protect myself. For this photo, i did not only frame the water sculpture but more of the background as well. This is to create my small existence in the vast space to further emphasize my shyness in any environment. I decided to choose purple to represent my shyness because it is a mix of blue and pink which equal to me blushing.

Obey Rule: I’m quite a health nut and set rules for myself to live a healthy life. I follow a strict diet of not eating after 9 and not eating any unhealthy snacks including cup noodles. The stable pillar and same visual weight of the water droplets show the consistency I strive in my daily life.

Hidden Courage: On the surface, I look like a calm and obedient person. Someone who follow the rules just like the serene gentle feel this image give off and how water droplet follow the nature’s rules and create ripples of waves on the surface. However, if u look at the core, u will discover the darker side of me. I will summon my courage and break the rules if needed to. Sometimes when i overslept and woke up after 9, i would still eat the dinner my parents bought for me because I don’t want to waste food. I also trespassed restricted area to guide my 4D teammates (Yi Ling and Clara) to a filming location that i had found.  I decided to use blue as that is what people associate it with water. I want to create the impression that everything look normal on the surface and create my alter ego with its shade.

Monochromatic is used just like the above compositions because it is in a rule setting. This time, if u look at the compositions together, it is analogous cool to show my calm and quiet personality. They tend to retreat into the space because they are easy on the eye just like me who like to hide in the background.

I shoot all these on the water surface using the dripping method because i want to show that rule is everywhere around us. For example, when we go on mrt we can see a bunch of rules like “no eating” sign or else fined. Hence i want to show the interaction of liquid in air to convey the idea.

Before i start off the next two rows of composition, here’s a question to refresh your mind.

What do u think is the most efficient way of study for b- type? Is it continuously study, speaking out loud to memorize thing or start from the most difficult subject?

.

.

.

It is starting from the toughest subject!

B type people get distracted easily so if they do the thing they hate the most, they can use the remaining time to rush out their favourite subject.

slide3

Medium: Food dye, acrylic paint, milk, liquid, medicine droppers and syringes.

B-Type in school: B type are fun loving and spontaneous. They will be all over the place in school looking at things they are curious. Hence I make the yellow liquid having a sense of freedom, flying and widely spread out so that our attention with be on it first. The other colours representing their friends are rooted to the ground. For this image, i dripped droplets of different colours into the fish tank at the same time. I mixed milk to yellow food dye so that it will be denser than the rest making it sink faster. It will also have more visual weight because it is more opaque than others. This image had been inverted.

Study: Study require a balance between social life, school work and family time. It is fundamental for everyone so i used primary colour and asked my parents to shoot out the liquids using syringes underwater in a triangle manner. This is so that they will all collide showing they are of equal importance with b-type’s personal interest gaining slightly more priority.

Distracted: The measuring cup is a metaphorical representation of the subject that b-type people dislike as it follow a systematic order similar to rules. Hence they escape out to be free in the sky like the air bubbles escaping out from the measuring cup and going to the water surface. The constant motion of the air bubbles reflect how b-type people are unable to keep still as they are always distracted. Blue is seen around the cup to show the reluctance to study that topic. A ring of red is used to show passion and desire to escape out . Ultimately it become joyful after it escaped. Hence yellow occupied the largest space.

Triadic colour is used for this rows to show that in school, we are expected to juggle many things; school work, co-curriculum activities and personal time. Hence we need to strike a balance in our life.

In fact, shooting triadic compositions is pretty hard. It require two people to pour the liquids in. A strong chemistry and teamwork is needed to sync and add the liquids in time with the same amount of pressure to get these results.

slide4

Medium: Food dyes, acrylic, water, medicine droppers, milk and heavy whipping cream.

Me in My Room: My room is quite a mess. It is always clustered with things because i’m an art student. *Ahhem* ( Excuses) I used colours to represent the mess i’m living in, the small negative space is where i’m working. I layered the colours as a metaphorical representation of the things in my room according to how often i used or touch them. As a refresh, blue hue represent me. Hence the objects closest to me has to be my bed and my homework.  Yellow is the banana smell in the room because I would always forgot to eat them until the aroma comes out. Lastly, red belong to the my roommate’s side in the room. I used the medicine dropper and draw circles in the fish tank according to blue, red and yellow. I used blue and yellow food dye mix with acryllic and red acrylic with milk. The viscosity of food dye spread the blue colour out quickly so everything has to be done fast or the blue will occupy the whole tank.

Study: Study is the most important thing to me. I would neglect my own health and didn’t spend much time with my friends and family. It is reflected in the big bubble, having the most visual weight, is on the top while smaller bubbles are at the bottom. The smaller bubbles representing my family and friends and my own health are significantly smaller because i think of them less than study. Blue signify my study, red shows my family and friends because of my feelings towards them and the dull yellow reflects my unhealthy body.

Sleep: Whenever i want to study, i would often feel very tired and end up sleeping and waking up to study then fall asleep again. My stamina is very low when it come to studying despite my desire to do well. For this photo i used heavy whipping cream mixed with different colours to create the density so that it would have a cloudy effect like i’m in my dream world. Pastel colours is used to enhance the dreamy effect. Bright lights at the top is a metaphor for my conscious entering the portal of dreamworld and sinking deep as i fall into a deep sleep. There are yellow and green hues at the back as my conscious enter the portal to show the peaceful and happy state i’m in because i get to sleep.

It is mostly triadic compositions for this row same as the above row except for the last one. Analogous is used to narrate sleep to create a peaceful and relaxing feeling whenever i get to sleep. It is also the time when i forget about my study so i want to use a different colour scheme to express that idea.

All these rows of compositions, i shoot it underwater because i feel that study is deep in the mind. Thus, i want to show the density and weight of knowledge occupying our mind.

My Goals

Consistency

Over the weeks, my artworks have been all over the place like me. Being a very curious person, i like to explore lots of new things. Looking at my classmates’ works, i realized that consistency have been a missing element in my project. For this project, it became one of my prime focus which i feel that i did quite well.

Minimise the usuage of Photo Manipulation

I have to admit that i had failed for some image. As my concept is on self-esteem; seeking the uniqueness/beauty in an ordinary me, i hoped to achieve it without relying too much on photo manipulation. That would become artificial beauty. It’s like going for plastic surgery to  boost my self-esteem and not seeking the true beauty within me that make me special. Hence my goal was to only do the basic post production:

  • Cleaning up the background
  • Enhancing the contrast and saturation
  • Subtle color corrections (but no colour manipulation)
  • Cropping  and straightening the image correctly
  • Sharpening the image

However i had to go beyond the boundaries i had set for myself for some photos because of these reasons:

  •  Restriction on image size

Due to the given size, the liquids in some of my underwater images were out of frame. I had to move them and adjust them into the position i wanted within the frame.  After the process of moving it, the outcome of which liquid had been manipulated became very obvious as it can’t be sharpen and have a stark contrast with other liquids.

  • Unexpected good shot that fit into my narration

I had spend a long time planning on the colour harmony, tone and the juxtaposition of colours to emphasize the core colour. I did have some decent shots that fit into my colour scheme without have to manipulate the colour. However there will be the chance moment when i captured the perfect image that express the idea much stronger than the previous ones. Hence i had to manipulate the colour to fit my compositions.

Photos before Major Manipulations

img_1125 img_1521 img_1269img_1268

Problems

TIme- consuming

Depending on the complexity of my composition, it may take about 10-15 photos to get 1 or 2 photos that are suitable for my composition. It roughly took me about 1 hour to get one decent photo. Some photo take more than an hour. Time pass really fast when i’m doing liquid art photography. Its quite a mundane, repetitive and stressful process. Setting up the perfect environment for the shoot alone take up few hours already. Lots of lighting adjustment to do to get the studio effect and changing of water to clear away the polluted water. After each refill, the camera had to be refocus again. The fish tank is great to use for the shooting and but it takes up a lot of time fill it up and too heavy to carry by myself.

Colour Printing

As yellow represent the spontaneous in my blood type, the colour has to be bright and cheerful. I tested with different printers. The school printer gave a dull colour but sharper image. Although my home printer had a bright yellow, the resolution was bad. There were lines. In the end, the one that gave the best result was the printer out of school.

p_20161114_021605-300x225

(Sorry for the bad resolution taken from my phone)

The one on the left is printed from home while the right is by ADM.

Tough to do it alone without proper equipment

I can never imagine completing the project without my friend’s help. If he didn’t guide me the along the technical aspects and bring all his equipment especially the remote trigger which is an important tool to let me take photo by myself, i would have scrap away the whole concept. It took a lot of mental multitasking and deep concentration to do this alone. Squeezing the medicine dropper with one hand while clicking the remote on another. Checking the photos is another hassle until i suggested wireless streaming of photo into his laptop as i recalled seeing it before. He brought out his cable and connected his camera to his laptop. Photo taken on the spot is uploaded to lightroom and i can view at ease from a distance. All hail to technology and Siong June! My knees are saved from having to go up and down the bed frame continuously. He also helped out with the shoots when i do not have enough hands as i had to pour the colours into the tank. Also with the macro lens, its definitely much sharper and produce beautiful clear images. However if the liquid is not aim properly at the focus point, it create a blur image. Hence the D.I.Y stand is very important to eliminate errors and save time from needing to take more shoots.

Despite all the hardships, i really like the imaginative visual created from liquid art photography. Looking at the photo, i feel that all my efforts are worth it. Siong June and i have agree to team up to work on this project over the holidays! Yayy!! Initially i wanted to add cymatics in to my compositions but i can’t find a suitable speaker for it. Maybe i will try that out too!

Disastrous Day and Video

Okay its time to do this!

After plenty of research and much planning on the colour choices and compositions that i want to create, what’s left is to experiment.

My goal for project is to reduce the usage of photo manipulation as much as possible afterall i want to show the uniqueness of liquid in its natural form. Hence i did much careful planning on the colour theory for each images i have in mind.

My friend who is very knowledgeable in photography had kindly agree to guide me through the technical aspects on setting up the right environment for the shoot and using the camera. Before that, i had tried using a Nikon camera borrowed from school and the result was horrible. I didn’t manage to capture a decent photo so i was very grateful for Siong June’s help.

Day 1 of the Shoot

p_20161107_032347

These are the medium i used in my shoot.

Others are bowls, measuring cups and fish tanks.

To capture the liquid art sculptures. he brought all of his equipment.

  • Camera: Canon EOS 60D
  • Lens: Canon 24-70mm F/2.8 lens
  • Flashes: 1 flash gun and 1 studio strobe light
  • Tripods
  • Remote trigger

I was so surprised to see him carry such a huge long bag. He looked like he just came back from a long overseas army trip haha!

This whole experiment is split into liquid above the water surface (dripping scenes) and below the water surface (liquid flow scenes). I will be doing the dripping scene first.

I prepared different bowls to contain the liquid. In the end, i decided to use the white bowl so that no colour from the bowl will be reflected and muddled the coloured liquid later.

The setting up of the perfect environment for the studio effect shooting is so time-consuming. There was a cast shadow on the bowl that we tried different methods like changing the direction of the lighting and changing the shooting place from table to my roommate’s bed frame. Yes we did this in my hall and at my roommate’s bed frame haha! I have to say this till now i have no roommate. I’m not a inconsiderate person that ruined her place while she’s away hahaha! At the end, adding the studio strobe light solved the issue.

img_0013-2

First, i added water in the bowl and placed a coin in the middle to act as a focus point for the camera and for me to know where to aim my drip later. I mixed food dyes or acrylic paint to liquids and used the medicine dropper to drip the liquid on the bowl. There is not much different in the outcome of using acrylic paints or food dyes in the dripping scene.

Getting the right timing is the whole essence in this project. For this dripping scene which show the water droplets colliding onto the water surface in the bowl to form interesting sculpture, the shutter speed is set at 1/200 to capture liquid speed. In order to get the composition i wanted, i repetitively dripped on the water and change the bowl when it became too polluted.  It is definitely not for the impatient one. I had to go down to check the photos then climbed back up the bed frame and down again. While i was on top, i was in a squeezed area because my surroundings are all paints, so i can’t sit in comfort. After continuously doing this for hours, my knees started to hurt but i had to endure.

After getting the drip compositions done, the next will be liquid flow scenes. Basically coloured liquid will be flowing in a fish tank filled with water. I thought the scenes can be easily done because liquid flow slower in water and the compositions i had in my mind are more spontaneous and less confined to the structure i sketched in my journal like the dripping scenes. I had never expected it to become a nightmare. Initially i used a fish tank i made during my polytechnic life but the side cracked after refilling it a couple of times. The table was flooded. I had to clear up the mess and called for help. My parents came with a fish tank borrowed from my aunt. It turned out to be a pretty large fish tank so a lot of time are spent refilling it to pass a certain level for the liquid to have enough room to flow.

p_20161030_163618 img_1242  p_20161107_010902

The medium i used to experiment for liquid flow are heavy whipping cream and milk mixed with food dye or acrylic. Cream has more density and a higher viscosity than milk, so the outcome was it appeared denser and had lots of creases. The green liquid in the photo is achieve with heavy whipping cream and blue is done with milk. For the yellowish green liquid, it is achieve with food dyes.

 Day 2

Siong June borrowed a macro lens. Woohoo! Never expected it but thanks a lot!

With previous experience, i went to borrow a lighting set from school and bought other medium i want to experiment.

Add on to the equipment list

  • 100mm Macro lens
  • 1 Strobe light

I thought the shots using his normal camera lens was pretty good but the macro lens gave a way clearer and sharper image. It was stunning.

However before that, lots of calibrations like the lighting had to redo again. Few hours gone.

When everything is okay, here’s another issue. With the macro lens, the depth of field is smaller, so the water droplets have to dripped very precisely or the droplet will end up looking too blur to be used. I ended up taking a much longer time to get a suitable photo for my composition. The whole workflow speed had slow down. I had to find a way to fix the dropper so that it can dripped in the correct place. I taped the dropper to a piece of wood and secured it to my stool. With this d.i.y stand, the dropper is fixed in a spot and the droplets fall accurately into the middle of the bowl.

I realized for the dripping scene to achieve the crown in the composition, the height where it dripped and density of the liquid are crucial factors to achieve the result i wanted. If a low density liquid is dripped at a high distance, the crown will be very tall and thin. The sculpture will not be form if the dense liquid is dripped from a low distance. The best is to have a high density liquid dripped from a high height to get a crown that is wide on the top with some spikes coming out.

I explored a bit with oil and soap. I wanted the inks to float on top of the oil, but I never expected them to sink instead. As for the soap, when i pressed my soap bottle, it came out in a long strand. It looked like a torn spaghetti piece and did not give any interesting effect. I doubt it can be used in any shoot.

Lastly, a video of how i do the dripping scene by myself laughing

Concept and Artists Research

Frankly, i am not an open person and neither am i ready to bare it all out…

I prefer to talk about me in a more detached manner so i decided to talk about an issue that me and some people are facing.

My low self-esteem.

I have always doubt myself, thinking i that i’m not special.

Everything about me is average.

What is my purpose in life?

But…

Coming to ADM, every time i showcased my work, i gained a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. When my classmates gave me positive feedbacks like how they find my works interesting and seeing how different our works are from each other, i realized that we are all special. Everyone see things differently. I may be quiet and shy but my art speaks for me.

My concept is to encourage people like me who are doubting their self-worth that we are all special in our own ways! Its an EGO boosting project!

I thought of using blood as a comparison to my real selves because it is very relatable to how people normally think my personality. When they ask what blood type i am, they naturally fit me into the mold of that blood group’s characteristics, but i’m more than what my blood says about me. We are more than what life give us.

I saw the distinct behaviour difference in me and how my blood type B is represented as. I’m a mix of A or O type depending on the situation.

Somehow i always end up dozing off when i’m study so i’m like AB hahaha! Need to plan my time well to absorb the information.

With this concept in mind, it comes to the execution part. What form do i want to present me work in? The possibility is endless as there is no restriction this time round. Its all up to my imagination.  I knew i want go about it in an abstract manner.  That is when i thought of personify blood with liquid. I researched a lot on liquid art and encountered a new world, deeply entranced by the beauty of it. I decided upon liquid art photography right then.  This is a field i have never done before. I did plenty of artists research to have an idea of what i can achieve from this experiment with the equipment i can get to the best of my ability.

He explore liquid art photography for three years and explored using many different methods. He shot them with a pellet, bend it with an air stream, work with fountains, soap bubbles, smoke, the combinations are endless and only limited by the imagination.

These are his drip on drip works.

Water are mixed with ink, food dye and other medium like milk to achieve the colourful visuals.

Water droplets dripped from medicine droppers or water drop kit collide at a precise timing to form these imaginative beautiful water sculptures.

Dropping

This project titled Dropping is a tribute to the master of dripping technique, Jackson Pollack.

He was a big fan of the chaos theory, the process is quiet similar. He used sunflower oil instead of the usual water mix with ink to achieve these.

Blackground

Blackground is achieved by pouring the varnish into the water. It’s not easy as he just described, because he spent a lot of time building all that stuff that now he use to shoot varnish into the water. Most of the time he can catch something beautiful just by chance but it’s very very important to find the right light and, the hardest part, find the perfect mix between varnish and water and the way to pour this mix into the tank.

I love the effect of these mixture forming a density mass. It look very surreal like a crumbled piece of an expensive fabric. Liquid in liquid always have a light feeling because of their fluidity but now it make me question the weight of the mass. The blending of colours also create an interesting visual imagery that can be further explore.

Liquid Flow

These images are created by manually dropping cream or water, coloured with food dye, into a small aquarium filled with water. The images are then rotated 180 degrees . Some are altered using the mirror and flip technique.

Liquid art photography uses the most ordinary medium and create the most beautiful mystifying photos. It is a sight that not much people know of. ( When i was borrowing camera equipment in the school lab for this project, no one ever heard of this.)  This form of art really express my concept that everyone is unique. Water being the most ordinary form in our daily life. If we spend some effort to look at it more closely, they are so beautiful that they don’t lose out to anyone.

—————————————————————————————————————————————————————————–

I have zero experience in using a professional camera nor adjusting the right setting to shoot. I’m basically like a fish out of water. This will be my hardest project with my lack of knowledge and having to accomplishing it within a short time frame with piling stack of homework. I’m quite intimidated by my own ambitious but let give this a “shoot!”

Wish me luck! X.X
