4DII : Installation : Process + Final

Concept

Scraping off the previous idea of Existentialism, we have finalized our whole concept into a post apocalyptic bunker with narratives scattered throughout the room. Audiences get immersed into it as they explore the abandoned room gathering pieces of information of that happened in this bunker. With these information, they will form their story of what went in the bunker. (which you are going to figure out now~)

Plot & Character Development

With Ruyi’s advice, we worked on creating a plot within the bunker. Here’s the gist of it.

And that’s why our installation is called Bunker 143.

143 stands for “i love you” with the numbers of letters in each word. Out of love, sometimes the choices we make in turn contribute to our end. In Chinese, “爱死你” means i love you so strongly till the death of me. It can be seen in our narrative. The father went to took his child’s blanket despite the bird flu outside. He soon caught on the virus and died. The mother killed her child to free her pain and misery from the virus. She in the end committed suicide because of the grieve and guilt. So, its really “我爱你爱到我要死”.

I love you so much until i want to die.

Conceptualize idea into reality

  • Reference images

Image result for post apocalyptic gif

We are inspired by the “isolated from the world” feel when creating this bunker.

  • Memories

At the same time, we wanted to evoke memories from the audience and set the premise of a loving family in the bunker. Hence we dug out our old stuffs and found some precious items from our childhood. Another reason why we used old items was also to give a time stamps of the period when the family were trapped in the bunker. All these objects are carefully selected to convey the lifestyle and information of the characters. The drawings and toys to show the innocence of a fun-loving child even in a desperate situation. The father’s devotion to ensure the child was catered to even if the objects resulted in clutter and were useless in practicality. The mother’s pre-existing condition of anxiety and unstable mental state through her medication.

  • QR- Audio diary

The speech in each audio log was designed in such a way that the audience could start with any one and still be able to piece the story together. This was to help the audience as there was no feasible way to guide them in sequence without disrupting the interactivity and immersiveness of the set.

Audio Diary Log 1

Intro – “Febuary 28, it’s been 2 weeks since my family and I entered this bunker. Both of them are holding up well, they seem okay with this arrangement. Everything will be well soon… right?”

Audio Diary Log 2

“April 17, The room seems smaller than ever, there are too many things in this bunker. Why did my dumb husband bring so many things? Do we really need the old snow-globe? It reminds me of our honeymoon in Paris from way back. *Sigh…*”

Audio Diary Log 3

“May 30, she looks so happy, playing with her dolls. her toys are all over the place and it’s been getting in the way, but she’s happy so I’ll bear with it. She keeps asking for her blanket, but she still seems to be having fun playing board games with me and drawing. I’ve been cleaning up after her non stop but if it keeps her happy I’ll do it. I can’t wait for the day we can get out and she can live properly again.

Audio Diary Log 4

“August 26, We have enough food for another 6 months, if the virus doesn’t clear up by then then what will we do. I tried telling him but he kept saying it was fine, that we would be ok. But what if we aren’t? Why can’t he see that we’re in trouble, why does he never, ever understand. If he cares so much for the child why can’t be understand that having enough food is better for her than having all these toys. I don’t know how to do this anymore, he isn’t taking this seriously. ”

Audio Diary Log 5

“Oh no oh no. . . .he went back to get her blanket. She wouldnt stop crying… He said that it will be okay and that nothing bad will happen. FOR GOD”S SAKE THERE IS AN EPIDEMIC OUT THERE and he. isn’t. back…its been 3 hours… oh no oh no… if something happens…. He is back he is back!!!”

Audio Diary Log 6

“…He died today.” *long pause* “How could he leave us just like that? Just for that stupid blanket. I-I can’t take this. I need to lie down.”

Audio Diary Log 7

She keeps sneezing recently, and she looks so pale and skinny. back before he died she kept going near him, I’m sure she’s caught it. she looks sicker every day, I can’t watch this again

Audio Diary Log 8

*sighs, soft crying, then thumps onto the floor*

  • CCTV

Surveillance footages were taken by each of us at different locations to cover more ground. We simulated the way how surveillance camera locate and shoot. Thus the videos mostly show panning shoot recording empty spaces that lack of humanity to create the post-apocalyptic situation the family faced previously. The CCTV footages pans on empty areas, and it gives a feeling as though something is going to pop out at you.

Multiple screens were playing on a several laptops in different parts of the room, with one master projection against the wall.

The main projection is tested out with different cellophane colour over it. The red was too harsh like horror movie while the blue gave the desired cold, distant atmosphere that we were striking for.

  • Sounds

The sound is constantly on loop. With the dominate sound being the cricket sound overlaying the whirring noise from the fan. The mix of unsettling mechanical noises and the sounds that you can hear at night when you are alone walking on the street adds to the sense of isolation in this bunker.

  • Glow paint

It is to emulate the presence of blood. Allows the audience to ponder what exactly happened on that area. Especially when Audio Diary Log 8’s QR code is situated there.

Outcome

Feedbacks

Most of the story are pieced together. Some form their own version of story from all the information like some thought the mother was uncaring and self-centered and some had different ending to our plot. All sort of interpretations are welcome! It shows the audiences are engaged in our set. What im really happy about is that the nostalgic objects in the room did trigger memories and their association to it. They were mostly the drawings and five-stones. Huimin enjoyed the room a lot as it resembled the 60s game that she played.

Reflection

It was very interesting to find out how each audience interpreted the set and perceived each part of the room differently. It was amazing how we could find that room that work so well with the vibe that we are going for. Although the blood could be more realistic if there wasn’t logistic issues. Nevertheless, our team did a great job and we worked well to put off this installation with various elements.

Yaayy!!

Every ending of an installation

At the very end, u can see our awkward thumbs up shot wink

Holiday Movie Analysis

Silence of the lamb

When Ruyi first showed us this clip, I was deeply entranced by the great acting skill of Hannibal and the dynamic interaction between both characters

So, Yi Ling, Clara and me watched the whole movie together! Yeah!

This is my analysis on the film.

Themes of the Silence of the Lamb
You have to courteous to others in order to gain courtesy

Agent starling has treated Hannibal like a normal human with respect and courteous. Hence Hannibal has done so back to him, constantly helping her unlike what he did to the psychiatrist and the lady government person.

Gender prejudice
Agent starling works in a male dominated environment. When they found the body, her boss originally wanted to exclude her from the conversation thinking she can’t handle it. The police officers also were reluctant to accept her order to leave the room only when she asked nicely then they left.

Human rights
Just because we are seen “normal” compared to those who have mental illness, does it give us more rights than them? The doctor treat Hannibal as an experiment and not a person. He wired into their conversation and confiscated his treasured things.

Manipulative
This film is loaded with manipulative scenes like in the start from how Starling’s boss manipulated her to take on the mission. The doctor strike a deal with Hannibal and Hannibal manipulated the guy that shoot white liquid on Starling to kill himself.

Overarching theme: Dun judge a book by its cover.

Hannibal doesn’t seem like what he seem in the start. In the start, he was portrayed as a very terrifying person kept at the edge of the cell with special windows to keep him out of harm. However, at the end, he seem like a nice person as he help starling. Bill was also another one. Even his partner didn’t know the truth about him before he died. Starling’s boss may seem like a nice person but is he really like that? Him manipulating Starling and some clues hinted that he may not be what he seem to be.

Cinematic prop

Lamb is seen in Starling’s nightmare with association to people who commit crime.

Her dad died in the burglars’ hand. Afterward when she couldn’t save the lambs in her uncle’s farm from being slaughtered, she started dreaming of them. Subconsciously, i feel that the lamb represent her dad so she had strong determination to save them. But she wasn’t capable at that time. Thus if she solve the crimes, her nightmare will stop.

Butterfly = change. Its a symbol for bill desire to become a woman. As he got rejected to become transsexual, he seek other methods to become a woman. Butterfly go through metamorphosis to become a better self. Bill desire to become women so now he’s in a cocoon state but once he gather enough women skin and wear the “women suit”, he would become a beautiful butterfly.

Another example is the butterfly chime spins with two butterfly image originally then it became one after buffalo bill got killed. This is to show one “butterfly” is down.

Blade runner

Themes of Blade Runner

Racism

I feel that the term skinjob, used to refer to robot with human skin, sounds so racist. They are given emotions so to call them such superficial term i find it very degrading. It is a common quote name used by the police to classify these group of people.

Identity Crisis

Rachel is faced with the truth that her memory are fake and that she is a replicant.

Over-arching theme: who is the human and who is the replicants.
Human are coldhearted and has no empathy as compared to the replicants. When Derek killed the replicant on the street, the humans weren’t even shock. Robots repetitively demonstrated kindness and compassion in the film. Hence the line between human and robots are hard to distinguish apart from their body structure.

Cinematic prop

Boiling eggs represent the manufacturers of the replicant. It shows that they are in deep water. There are 3 eggs. One egg was dropped in Sebastian ‘s kitchen after the eyes maker died. The remaining two represent Sebastian and the boss.

Train to Busan

Although this wasn’t recommended by Ruyi, i happened to watch this film so i’m going talk about it.

This film talks about family ties and explore the humanity behavior when they are at their worst situation.
These are the 4 type of people that i observed.
1.selfless- help people out in trouble even though they are in precarious situation eg. The burly man.
2. Selfish- try their best to survive at all means even to the extend of sacrificing other people live eg. the antagonist
3. Leecher-follow the most powerful/informative person and survive through the help of people eg. the beggar man
4.blind followers- blindly follow the order of other people because they are in fear and in need of someone to lead them eg. passengers on the same train

Themes of Train to Busan

Self-sacrifices for a greater good

The beggar man and the burly man sacrifice themselves to save the women and child.

Value the importance of spending family quality time before you regret.

What’s the point of being so busy when you will regret spending so little time with your family. That’s why Gong Yoo cried as he regretted not being with his child, watching her grow up before he committed suicide.

Teamwork

Selfishness will get you to nowhere. Everyone would die if they didn’t help each other.

Over-arching theme: Moral values and kindness must be upheld at all times.

Cinematic prop

The train of morality (dissected in various cabinet)
The protagonist undergo change from a selfish person who only care for his and his daughter benefits into a selfless man. This is seen especially when he said sorry to the burly man when he had no other choice but to leave him to save the man’s wife and his child.

The friends’ cabinet. When they reach his baseball friends’ cabinet, the baseball dude faced a tough situation. It is to hit his friends and save his and his current comrades’ life or not and die. If the train didn’t enter the tunnel, I have a feeling that the baseball dude will choose to die judging from his later action when he choose to become infected like his girlfriend.

The selfish crews. Not only did they lock the survives out but they also chase them away when they came into the cabinet 15. Its funny how they decided to secure the doors to prevent the survivors from entering instead of  locking the opposite door and keep themselves safe from the zombies. That’s why they died.

The evil man takes the longest time to convert into zombie. Zombie has the meaning of losing one will and only has the instinct to eat regardless of what happen to u or the people around u. Thus i feel that he’s already half zombie. He only has the raw instinct to survive like zombie, no heart and soul for people around him.

Installations Fieldtrip

Yess!!! We went to artscience musuem for our fieldtrip! This is the coolest fieldtrip as i really enjoyed here and *cough the tickets are expensive cough cough*.

I’m armed with my camera and head to the first pit.

NASA- A human adventure

I’m crazy for space exploration so you can tell how excited i’m right now.

When i first stepped into the exhibitions, i was greeted by portraits of famous figures like Leonardo Da Vinci. Honestly, i can’t really tell their significant in the role of space exploration. I know a bit of Leonardo Da Vinci dreamed of flying and so his diary had illustrations of flying mechanism. So, i went to do deeper research, The portraits actually belong to famous writers and artists that dreamed about going into space. Indeed, without the “foolish dream”, all these won’t become a reality.

And of course, this exhibition is filled with lots of spaceship components like engines and more. The sets are pretty huge.

They split the rocket and displayed it in pieces. Here’s a reason why they can’t display the real thing.

An interesting article on the first creature that went to space. Apparently they sent rats up too. I was quite shocked to know this. They were sent to their doom. There were debates about animal cruelty going on behind this article. It certainly contributed a lot to space history. At the same time, I kinda want to volunteer for this mission when i’m old and can’t afford a ticket to sit on spaceship. Just sent people like me up and there won’t be this issue.

I always had this bad impression that astronauts had a horrible palate. That’s the only thing i worry if i get to fly up on space. I can’t eat pasta, ramen, fish. Goodbyes to hot food and rice. But, I WAS WRONG! Their menu list is long!! They also catered to different countries’ preferences. Good job there! The visual maybe lacking but damn i want to try their food. One serving over here, please~ :3

The big boy is here now! Those game for a space experience can hop on this ride. That’s what Yi Ling and me did!

Warning: No visual here. Only response to the thrilling experience. The response are really loud, so please NEVER put on your earpieces. The response are mostly given by Yi Ling. I find it quite funny so i putting it up here. HEHE!

I dropped my phone in the middle of the ride so please play the clip in the background VERY softly as you read my post 🙂

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvP56f-rnGY

(There’s some scenes from 1:00 onwards)

For a $6 ride to experience the short thrill of leaving earth accompanied with sounds of american voice narrating, i think it was okay. The only down side is the visual. The video is so near my face and its so pixelated. My mind would be so gone if i were to stare at the video throughout the whole ride. I think i would come out puking.

My favorite piece of all. The interactive revolving globe. As it spin, you can control which planet you want to see up here as well as its speed.

The Nasa exhibition is mostly about the history of space; how it came to reality and what went into building the equipments. I feel that its a very informative enriching journey. However, it lacks the “wow” factor. I think i would be seeing more about the space discovery rather than the history behind it. Nevertheless, its interesting to know about the history of space travel.

Future World

It is about the future park that the artist envisioned.

The first time i stepped in and this is what i see.

SO BRIGHT! SO COLOURFUL! All of us are instantly hyped up.

The installation is so interactive and immersive. The sound is so dreamy, playful and inviting. The song “lalang lalang” is so catchy and easy to sing too haha! So, here my photo take. The third photo looks like a yellow turtle hehe.

My coloured jellyfish “escaped” to the HD underwater world.

This installation is so inspiring and fun. After going for both, i realized that a successful installation really let the audience forget their existence and be immerse in the environment that they are in now. That’s the charm of installation to communicate to the public in a new world. One important factor that really engage audiences is the interactivity which is why the future world exhibition appealed to me more. Apart from it connects to my love for colours, the innocent and fun factor really feel like a paradise for kids and beyond. I mean who can not have fun here?

Last pit stop of the day: Jendela.

This installation is pretty cool. The video is projected on the floor in a circle, so you have to go near and look down like you are examining it. It started with the focus on human then slowly panning out to the city, earth surface, planets and ending with the cosmic universe. This work suggest that the Buddhist cosmology is a fitting framework in order to understand the different segments of contemporary Thai society and the cyclical nature of its politics. I think the medium is quite fitting to portray the artist idea. Buddhism holds an important role in the Thailand culture. It prevail in people’s daily life, so the circle, which represent infinite, also show how Buddhism being perceived by them too. so The slow panning of the whole video create a timeless illusion as it moves from people to universe.

Finally, i would like to thank Ruyi for choosing such an awesome place for our field trip. I really enjoyed everything.

Cheers!

4DII: Final Project Proposal

EXISTENTIALISM

Group Proposal

Main Idea:

Our idea for this narrative site specific location is a set up in a post apocalyptic abandoned Singaporean bunker. The premise is that the room once belonged to a family of 3, and was abandoned after an unseen environmental calamity. The audience’s role will be to explore the space and slowly see what happened to the previous occupant, contemplate their place in the world, and possibly how to get out of the confined space.

The focus of the set will be on lights, sounds, and interaction.

Themes:

    • Existentialism (Feeling like a small person in a big world)
      • We want the audience to question who they are in the world and make them feel ‘small’, by showing them how people can just get up and disappear, leaving behind everything they value, and thus making them question if anything they do really matters if they can be wiped off the earth so easily.
    • Memories
    • Change (Isolation, loss)
      • In our hectic world, we are only able to slow down and think only when everything we know is gone. No distractions and no one around. This is when we are truly ourselves.
      • Forces the audience to slow down and think about themselves once all people/distractions are not in their immediate surroundings

Planned location:

  • ADM print room on second floor
  • One of the crit rooms
  • A small room

Lights:

  • Use of projection with video documentations of previous occupants, different portraits in black and white grain (Surveillance type)
  • Galaxy projection
    • Painting on transparency like in the project “Stellar”
    • To create another dimension within the same space. It also makes the room look futuristic which fits our post apocalyptic bunker set
    • It also gives the feel of floating away from your current reality into one of contemplation and reflection
  • Putting coloured transparency or cellophane paper against flashlights to create a coloured lightbox effect.

Sounds:

  • Futuristic sounds (Soft siren whine, radio noise, fan whirring)
  • An omnipresent narrator narrating in an ASMR style
    • ASMR as it can be comforting when tranquil, but as well as discomforting when you’re in a crisis
    • Undecided whether it will all be the same voice or different person to each object

Interaction:

  • Mirrors/reflective surfaces, seeing your reflected self everywhere
    • You are only with yourself.
    • Emphasizing the feel of isolation and the audiences’ place as a human being in a world larger than they thought before. In the room, there are no people, only the items they left behind and ghost images of the audience themselves.
  • Tangible items strewn around them that can be picked up
    • Triggers a unanimous, nostalgic emotional memory in audiences
    • E.g. A worn-out doll, old music box, plane ticket etc.
    • At the same time, the narrator will be narrating a memory associated with each of the items around the audience

References:

  • Stan Brakhage “Stellar” – Inspired to steer our light logistics according to his methods as well as to obtain the galaxy feeling which is crucial for our theme, so as to evoke a sense of loneliness and isolation in a vast space.
  • Black Mirror (Mirror/ reflective surfaces), our theme is similar in exploring memories and loneliness

Methodology:

  • Audience is brought into a dark room and made to lie down on some mats (childcare type)
  • They open their eyes, facing the ceiling projection of the slowly shifting galaxies
    • Story is that since civilisation (people around you) is gone, it’s easier to pay attention to the environment around you with no rush.
  • Around them are objects belonging to others, but most likely will trigger some sense of nostalgia and own memories to come forth. It makes you think of your own life. Your existence.
  • The narrator will be giving some history behind each of the object under the guise of the previous owner, prompting the audience to consider what the object means to them
  • The whole experience in own space is subjective. It is for you to explore your own existentialism and existence.

Discussion on Nicolas Bourriaud’s Idea

Describe a future form of post production art that does not exist today but that you can imagine twenty years from now.

I think that the content of post production will be the same just like in this video.

The borrowing of ideas from what we are exposed to and either expand on the idea or use the same idea and produce it out with new technology/ method. The future is unpredictable and full of rooms to explore. I once had the idea of a unconventional plastic surgery method. As plastic surgery is trying to obtain a desirable portrait on how we hope to look like, i hope it would be more within our control rather than on our people’s hand. To think of it in another way, it is like getting a photo from internet and print it out to get the physical form of the photo. Hence i thought of what happen if we could have a machine like sunscreen spray where instead of changing our skin colour, we could change our facial features. So basically we get the face we hope to achieve from internet then send it to the “printer” and we put our face in the machine and when its done, it will be like a layer on our face so we don’t need bandage all around our face like mummy and we could go out straight. It’s a weird idea that i thought of.

However as i type i once again confirm the idea of NICOLAS BOURRIAUD that “no idea is an original idea.” As everything we exposed to are a source of inspiration for us. This make me think that inventors like Albert Einstein are really amazing. They produce original things that is missing in life but are really beneficial to the world. From then on are just borrowing of ideas. However i do not undermine this point. As Ruyi showed us films using the deconstruction of existing films to convey a strong message. I felt the films were consciously edited and use appropriate footages to express the idea. Using footages that we are familiar has a message by itself, so editing it build on the message and give new perspective. As well as allow for critiquing on the source. The beauty of remix is also stated in Nicolas Bourriaud’s thesis. Using films that we are familiar with. there’s a direct immediacy as the audiences don’t have to be reintroduce to the work again.

Even though Ruyi suggested us to post our works on CreativesCommons, i still find it uncomfortable to do so… Im happy if my work could inspire people, but you never know how people would interpret your works in a different intention from how you hoped.

As a summary,

But, this is my pov of CreativeCommon. Unless CreativeCommon lets artists set rules on their own works so that people who use their works does not distort the artist’s intention,

Artist Inspiration on Expanded Cinema

Today we are taught on the aspects of expanded cinema.  Expanded cinema is a development film beyond seating so its more interactive and let audience be more engaged and active in it.

5 elements to note:

  • sound
  • media of film- how the film is projected and medium involved
  • space, site
  • audience
  • screen

Below are the artists that i found their works very inspiring.

Doug Aitken

He has created a body of work that explores the evolving ways people experience memory and narrative and relate to fast-paced urban environments.

This art piece is projected around the museum and only start playing at night. The song in the film is called “I only have eyes for you”. It’s a very old and popular song. This song evoke a nostalgic sense to people who passby there.

This song is about a guy(Dick Powell) fell in love with the girl(Ruby Keeler) from the movie, “Dames”.

There’s lot of repetition of the woman’s face in the music video. It give a slight comedy and creepy vibe that the girl is only all the guy can see.

By using multiple screen repetition to project the film in a 360 degrees view, so that audiences can see it from any angle, it really suit the song meaning of “I only have eyes for you.” As this piece play at night and bring about familiar emotions to the passerby, i feel that it could also comfort the people walking alone in the night that you are not alone in the big city.

Avant Garde films

An experimental way of making film by going beyond the limitation of resources and cameras from the 1920s.

Stan Brakhage

I really love this. The visual is so beauty and the method is like mark making. He used film strip as a canvas and pasted materials on it. This expanded the traditional method of film.  It really blow my mind and make me question the boundary we set by ourselves with things we familiarize with.

Image result for Stan Brakhage

Peter Campus

Another experimental video that i like a lot. This is just creepily beautiful.

Multiple screens experiment

With the use of multiple screens, audience is immersed and bathed in your work in that space; or even overwhelmed by the information provided given if that is the artists intention. When there’s more information, audience can also curate the source more effectively.

Shirin Neshat

The effective use of two screen with contrasting images convey a strong message of status and emotions of females in the Middle east. The female is singing emotionally without any words and there’s no audience in front of her. Her voice is also overwhelmed by the male singing. The male on the other hand, sings with ease and had an audience when he doesn’t face them. It show that males naturally have an outlet source to express their emotions. While the female look hidden in the background with her back often shown in the dark stage display the idea of how women is not supposed to perform live and have audience to listen to her feelings from where she comes from.

4D II: Curry Murder Process & Outcomes

Reality (Presentation Day)

Expectation (Post-Presentation Day)

I was initially very excited for this project on the possibilities of creating my own sounds as Ruyi showed us a video on how to create folley sounds. I was very enthusiastic and went around with zoombox recording various sounds. However i ended up didn’t use any of it. It turned out to be my most stressful project as i tend to overthink everything and felt very lost for what to do for the sound. After Yi Ling, my teammate, presented her video. I realised that i should start small and hence a new version with folley sounds film is created!!

Although its too late for submission, i had fun creating my own sounds and this film is close to how i envision the end product to be so here is it!

I will talk a bit about my original film as i missed out some points on the presentation day before talking about my new film.

First of all this is a class activity which has been blown into a full-scale project. Surprise, surprise! We grouped up into fours. My team consist of Yi Ling, Hui Min and Yu Qing. We were inspired by the well-used of non-chronological narrative from Memento.

Then we were going on the line of having a psychological horror film and all agreed on the curry murder idea. We proceed to shoot!

The panning of the house was actually the toughest. We tried out different method before reaching this method which give the most stabilized panning due to lack of budget haha!

Hui Min as the stabilizer to secure the camera so it will be steady and give less “seasick” panning.

Solo Action

After sieving out the good and bad takes and shared among each other, we are all on solo mode now. Editing and creating sound are the main components for assignment 2.

Plot

The plot revolves around a couple’s argument that went wrong. That drove the husband crazy and killed the wife. Then the husband decided to COOK her bodies and serve her as curry “chicken”.

(SICK but WHEN DO U HAVE THE CHANCE TO DO IT) heh

I decided to add my own take on this and give more reasons for why the husband killed her. In my story, the wife is more sophisticated and more educated as compared to the husband. She cheated on him yet acted so mighty and attacked on his weak point. He had an inferior complex on his lack of education so he really lost it when she cheated and called him “stupid”.

Character Profiling

To separate between educated and less educated, i decided to give them different voice. I wanted an accent for the English speaking wife but i can’t find anyone who could do that so i decided to have a go at it and failed. Hence i differentiate them by one speaking in English and the husband speak in Chinese and Hokkien. I visualised the wife as a superwoman who is capable outside and inside. That’s why the husband is so clumsy at house chores like cooking and the first meal he cooked is his wife. So ironic.

I was inspired by Last Year at Marienbad where there’s lot of repetition in the narrative. Hence in my film, I focused on giving the husband more power and having his stream of conscious repeating things that matters to him which are family and his education. I made the word “stupid” the loudest and have a constant audio gain because this word is what really trigger him so it’s “nearer”, more personal and constantly ring at the back of his head. Hence his thoughts are louder than what he said in real life.

Juxtaposition

  1. tension of husband -> boiling water
  2. trigger point of husband -> snipping off the tip of the plastic bag that contain carrot
  3. feeling the breath of death wife -> tasting the curry with finger

There are many more so watch my film and have a guess wink

These are the additional portions i added into my new film.

For the speech, i wanted to play with the irony of this whole situation with the values of the husband. He’s the one who care about his family yet he commit this act. Hence i placed the dialogue like “how could you do this” on the wife murdered face. The phrase “you have a family” slowly evolve into eat family. The chinese word “Jia” for family can also mean eat in Hokkien.

BGM: Jigglypuff by PPOMO ASMR

She’s my favourite Asmr artist so if you like asmr be sure to check her out!!

I wanted some echoy music to express the flow of thoughts. Then i encountered this music and thought why not this? It a familiar song that can evoke people who watched pokemon to be amused and have a nostalgic feel. Yet when play against this, it distort their childhood song into a whole new meaning. Jigglypuff sings to put people to sleep like how the husband put his wife to “sleep” too.

Folley sounds

Here to the most exciting part in my new film- the folley sounds!

  • Wife narration– my voice. It was really fun to roleplay and i even did her suffocated sound.
  • Husband narration– my dad voice. My dad is a peaceful guy so it was hard to make him angry. I tried to record my own voice and change the pitch but it sounded unnatural. Hence i stayed with his narration.

The rest of the sound i did it in 2D lab. It was a spontaneous thing when i recorded all these sounds with my phone. The brackets are the starting time of the sounds.

  • Feet kicking(0:57) made with beating my wallet on a table.
  • Stab wife (1:28) used the tofu skin im eating and stabing it with my food. I overlay the juiciness sound with the metallic sound from the spatula gliding on cloth.

  • Chop wife (1:32) done using the brush that was long coated with paint so it produced the squishy sound and matched it with the spatula rubbing against a wet cloth.

  • Chop chicken (1:37) used the brush and move against the glass window. It surprising create a very realistic sound even with bone cracking effect too.

  • Chop potato (1:03& 1:43) used the brush again and played with the sides and frequency.

Final orderly editing sequence for better viewing

I’m done with this assignment yeah!!!

I shall leave with grace off to the final assignment!

Last Year at Marienbad (1961) Narrative Analysis

For this class assignment, i partner with Yi Ling to watch this film!

Chronological order of the movie: Very inconsistent and irregular.

Q: Do you think the way this film is told works best for your story? How would you retell the story?

Yit Ling –  Flashbacks of the relationship between Emily and Alexy can be incorporated. Whereby Emily constantly shows affection to Alexy, would help in the story line of my film to build the history between them, so that the viewers can be more engaged in their relationship.

Yi Ling –  Flashbacks of the relationship between my grandmother and I can be added into the film as we reminisce about my childhood. I think the characters in my film in this case ought to be realistic with the age when it comes to flashback. Like when the flashback scene comes on, a child version of me and a younger version of my grandmother ought to be there.

Q: What makes this narrative (Last Year at Marienbad) work?

– The story centrals around Frank’s point of view about the female protagonist. Hence, it entwines the past, present and future of their relationship together.

– Metaphorical interpretations of their hallucinations/ potential conscience brings about depth of the characters and their inner struggles.

Q: Does this non-linear narrative work for other films

-Sci-fi, Fantasy and Thriller films would go very well with this form of narrative, such as The Time Traveller’s wife,

 Interstellar

and Alice in Wonderland

What we like about this film?

– The cinematography is amazing. Everything seems aligned perfectly.

1

 Line of symmetry

-We liked how they connect one of the hallucination/past memory with the present scene with the same dialogue, but different scenario. For instance when Frank was counting in the room with the female protagonist as he try to incur memory out from her in the past, the scene changed into the ball room scene where the female protagonist’s husband was counting the cards.

-Flashing of the 1 second scene whereby the female protagonist is holding her shoe, when she is in fact in the bar tells us that she might have remembered something about the past she cant recall.

– The multiple reflections of the female protagonist in the mirror can be interpreted as her different selves in the past, present and future.

3

– The triangle arrangement of her own reflection can symbolize loss and confusion of her current situation, as well as the past she don’t recall.

4

Doubts about this film:

– We do not understand the purpose of having the freeze moments, whereby only one person moves. The movements are focus and exaggerated.

– We do not understand why they kept repeating the dialogue over and over again in different scenes.

– Frank always used past tense to talk to the female protagonist, so we had this illusion that Frank can travel through time. However , if it is really the truth, why would Frank lose to the female protagonist’s husband in the gambling game? Is he a psychopath who is trying to enforce certain ideas onto the female protagonist, or is he trying to mold her into the memory he believes in??
