Approach

There are two stages to my approach.

First method is the break down the quotes into pieces. After separating it, i would seek out the possible metaphorical subjects to represent that section.

Second method is to find tone behind the quote.

With that in mind, i did several sketches to plan out the placement of the subjects. As i sketched, more ideas flowed through my mind and the subjects changed accordingly.

During the process of Photoshop, one of my composition also went through another round of “make-over” which i would talk about the difficulties in Photoshop later.

My Goal

I want to challenge myself by using all the narrative techniques that i have researched upon. I am deeply inspired by surrealism, so my goal is to show that in my works. My curiosity may bring me to branch out to explore other styles too. However i will stay rooted and keep surrealism as my common art style among four compositions.

Theme

After my consultation with Joy, i saw a pattern among my sketches. My theme will be first world issues. I hope to raise awareness that although development is good, it also let us taken granted for many things in life.

First Quote: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while , you could miss it.”

– Ferris Bueller’s Day Off 1986

There will always be people looking down on phone walking. As a result, they fail to appreciate the things around them. I used hyperbole to depict the narrative. A slow moving snail man is so absorbed looking at his phone. Life move really fast like a meteor coming so close on him. If he look behind once, he can see the meteor coming to him and may have an exciting chapter in his life which is he live to see a meteor. I used scale and implied line for the meteor to make it look like it going to hit the man. For the background, I choose a grid-like building to represent the consistency and stable life of these type of people. Then it got destroy by the meteor flying in in a diagonal way to dramatize and create tension. I was inspired by pop art and surrealism in this piece. In order to have a comic style look, i flatten the building by reducing the shadows and contrast of it. I have also chosen an illustrated meteor to further enhance the pop art style.

Second Quote: ” What we have got here is a failure to communicate.”

– Cool Hand Luke 1967

I instantly thought of “ji tong yao jiang“. A chinese proverb that mean 2 people talking at different wavelength and not understanding each other at all. I simulated the situation in online dating when the chicken man and the duck lady tried to communicate with each other over internet. The thing on their head is a tool to detect brainwave. As their brainwave is on different frequency, they failed to communicate with each other. With the network result revealing their love chemistry is zero, they give up and leave. In online dating context, that would be swiping to their next partner that easy. In online dating, people always have the mindset that the next one will be better so they didn’t put in as much effort as they would have in real life conversation. The chicken body is inspired by anthropomorphism pop art done by Lisa Bengtsson. She put all the detail, characteristic on the animal face and simplify the body into a silhouette. I like how it capture my attention with its simplicity. I applied the same by using a sweater and remove the shadow. However I found it to become like a big black hole so I add dingbats to add visual interest to it. I did the same to the computer screen so it would guide our attention to the text in the center.

Third Quote: “All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you”

– The Fellowship of Ring 2001

When I see this quote, I remember the times we go to canteen to eat during break time. There are many different stores in front of us but we still can’t decide what to eat. I also feel that time is limited from the tone of the quote. To express the dilemma from having to choose, i made humans to represent food and parody the proposal scene. The delicious food are all proposing to the brain to ask it to pick them. I used repetition to show the multiple food choices. Proposing means the other person have to decide at the spot, so there is actually time-sensitivity in this manner of proposal. Facing with all choices, pressing the brain to choose, it become very frustrated. The hands squeeze the brain trying to force an answer out.

The Art of Living by Rene Magritte

Being inspired by Rene Magritte’s The Art of Living, i placed strong emphasize on the visual weight of the brain and scales in the composition. Initially the brain was flat and 2D, so i warped it to make it look squeezed and protrude the center. This really give off the impression that the brain is overwhelmed with all these food in front of it.

For the food on the heads of the human, there are Chinese, western and Japanese food like how a typical Singapore canteen would have. I put sandwich in the front to represent the sandwich in ADM that every busy art student would go for. Even that vending machine have choices on the favour. The hamburger also appear frequently to show the brain can’t make up its mind and go back and forth.

The humans are initially placed in one straight row, making the composition look flat. They are also very tiny, so it was hard to identify what they are doing. Working upon Joy’s advise, i gave it a perspective view by making them big in the front to small at the back and arrange them leading to the brain. Our eyes is naturally drawn to the brain, the biggest subject, then to the dark small subject. The perspective view from the food humans guide the eyes to the negative space in the center. At which the implied lines from glazes of the food to the brain lead our eyes back to it again.

Trials

Social media have a deep influence in how we perceive beauty as. There are many people resorting to plastic surgery to look perfect and beautiful to meet the expectation of beauty which social media had sculpted in our mind. In this composition, i thought of using illusion to express how it is able to hypnotize us that physical beauty matters a lot as well as to reflect the quote that it was able to fool the world that it didn’t exist. Barbie is used as a figure of perfect beauty that everyone wish to obtain.

In the first row of trials, i used television to represent social media. I had a dilemma in which should i make the barbie look obvious or let the illusion do its thing and let people guess what is it.

After Dawin’s group presentation, i develop a new concept for illusion. I wanted to create an illusion on the human face focusing into the eye where there is a barbie symbol with icon representing social media (wifi signal/ television) This represent the illusion that the social media bring cause the human’s eyes to only able to see physical beauty.

After consulting with Joy, she recommended me to look up on the surrealism artist Rene Magritte’s The Son of Man.

The phone containing Barbie icon was put on top of the girl face to show that she desire to become like that. The barbie sent out a wifi signal and the girl got hook by the possibility of becoming a beautiful girl like the social media portray. Hence, her antenna got connected to the wifi. Flowers represent the natural beauty of many other people that was also entice by social media tactics that they desire to go for plastic surgery. Hence, their antenna was connected too. I place the antenna in a triangle way, guiding the eyes to the phone then work around it.

Ms. Joy’s comment:

The three composition look complete. As for the last one, maybe its because lack of time, there are things to improve on. There could be a mirror reflection of the girl to the barbie showing her desire instead. The flower on the sides could be wearing closet to show they are also seeking perfect beauty.

I feel the same because i have consulted her last minute so the concept is not that fully developed yet. I think the closet also show the flowers have become vain that is why they want to go for plastic surgery.

Struggles

Resource: I had a lot of difficulties finding the suitable images. I had to simply my ideas a lot and use a much common subject so that the images can be obtain much easier. For the third quote, there are actually three completely different composition before reaching the final most simplified version.

Photoshop: It was very time-consuming because it was my first time doing it. I made a lot of mistake in there. One time, i forget what did i click that the image tab is gone. I was completely lost. Luckily my friend who is very pro in photoshop help me resolve it through watsapp easily. He didn’t even need to touch my laptop to solve the problem, talk about GODLIKE!

Reflection

I quite like the project this time. I been wanting to explore photoshop so this is a great chance for me to do so. I feel so proud of myself in able to achieve this and learn a lot at the same time. I also managed to complete the personal goal i set for myself except for the caricature which i feel will look out of place from the compositions. Ohh well. I feel so inspired by this project that i want to continue doing quote interpretation in my own free time. My first project would be on my current favourite song Nandemonaiya by RADWIMPS. Their lyrics are so beautiful and dreamy~~

Silk Screening Day

Finally its Silk Screening Day! I been looking forward to this! I have no idea what to anticipate but it sound so impressive.

Okay, let the process do the talking.

Firstly, we had to wash and blow dry our screen frame to make sure its clean.

Then we were went to an enclosed red room where no outside light was allowed to be present because it would affect photosensitive emulsion that we were going to use. Heard it would be harder to wash out the residue if it got expose to light. (That process turn out to be the most painful thing to do…) We coated the netting of our frame back and front with the blue photosensitive emulsion before placing it in the dryer.

After which, we were taught to place our transparency paper and frame into a huge machine that radiate a strong beam of light. It look like a tanning machine. Now that i think of it, it felt like we send our frame to become tanned and come back looking all fancy with tattoos haha! The light causes the emulsion to harden and bind to the fabric. Where the light strikes the screen, the emulsion will bind, making a solid layer. Where the light is blocked (where the black image is placed) the emulsion remains water-soluble.

After exposing the screen, we went to wash the residue using the jet spray. That was the toughest part. The residues turn out to be quite stubborn to remove. We spent a lot of time trying to scrap off it. That was when Yi Ling mention about the waste of water. It then dwell in me the whole time when i washing it… I find that this system can be improve better by having a higher pressure jet spray to speed up the process. Another thing i realized was darker image make the residue remove much faster and easier.

After the cleaning up and drying the frame, we can finally print our design on the tote bag. This is done by applying a thick layer of ink over the top of our frame and pushed the ink across the designs with a wooden wiper tool.

I find that the second trial give a better finish. I was happy to see the lace on the duck’s clothes printed out quite well. However we are going to print it on tote bag. The material is much rougher and the holes are bigger than paper, so it hard to predict the result.

A problem with reusing the frame too much time is that the holes will be clogged ruining the image.

TIP!

What happen if there is too much unwanted ink appearing on a spot?

Is your frame lopsided?

If yes, this instruction may be beneficial for you.

Proof!

1. Spread out the tote bag and hold down the sides with weights.

2. Ask a friend to hold down the lopsided part of the frame.

3. The most crucial part. Always make sure your friend never leave his/her hands off the board even after you have spread the ink. This is to ensure there is no gap letting the ink to leak out to the bottom due to the lopsided frame.

4. Put down the wiper tool and hold the sides of the frame together with your friend.

Chant 1,2,3 please make it turn out beautiful~~

5. Lift up the frame together and the design would come up nicely.

Theory behind it: The excess ink leak out due to the lopsided frame. The trick is to instantly lift the frame so there will be no time to let the extra ink go through, ruining the design.

2D- Artists’ Research

DADAISM

Dada was an art movement of the European avant-garde in the early 20th century. It emerged amid the brutality of World War I.

The beginnings of Dada were out of disgust for the ‘reason’ and ‘logic’ of bourgeois capitalist society had led people into war. They expressed their rejection of that ideology in artistic expression that appeared to reject logic and embrace chaos and irrationality.

Dada represented the opposite of everything which art stood for. Where art was concerned with traditional aesthetics, Dada ignored aesthetics. If art was to appeal to sensibilities, Dada was intended to offend.

Hannah Hoch

Hannah Hoch was a well-known member of the Berlin Dada movement and was one of the originators of photomontage.

Known for her incisively political collage and photomontage works, she appropriated and rearranged images and text from the mass media to critique the failings of the Weimar German Government.

In her pioneering artwork, she addressed the issue of gender and the figure of woman in modern society in the form of photomontage.

Höch drew inspiration from the collage work of Pablo Picasso and fellow Dada exponent Kurt Schwitters, and her own compositions share with those artists a similarly dynamic and layered style.

SURREALISM

The Surrealist movement started in Europe in the 1920’s, after World War I. Its roots were found in Dada, but it was less violent and more artistically based. The Surrealist artists sought to release the creative potential of the unconscious mind by using irrational juxtaposition of images.

André Brenton, known as the “Pope of Surrealism describe surrealism as a “fusion of elements of fantasy with elements of the modern world to form a kind of superior reality.”

AFTER THOUGHTS FROM RESEARCH

Design Principles: From my own and my classmates’ presentation, i learn about various design elements and principles and would definitely apply them to create a more visually interesting composition.

Further define my style: Fantasy is always what i try to achieve in my work. I feel that Surrealism is the approach i would dive deeper.

Exploration on narrative techniques: Never forget about constantly improving myself, keep on learning and exploring new things is how i roll. Anthropomorphism, parody, metaphor and hyperbole. My goal is to include all in my compositions.

2D Experiment

Further explorations at school and home.

Home experiments; bring out the scientist in me!

Express Hurt/Sadness using alcohol wipes, tissue and cotton wool .

Putting another newsprint on top and rolling over it using wall paint roller!

Turn out to be a complete fail because i use acrylic paint as the base so it dry up fast. Only the alcohol wraps is shown. i reused the blank space at the bottom and try out other mediums like sponge.

Used a spinning top. The sharp line strokes that fly out in a circular manner reminded me of sparkler. I associated this to amazement.

Rolling my toy car over the paper. Noticed the line is vivid in the start and slowly fade out with grid mark across.

It is done using dish wire scrub to create a swirl. The lines created some are very thin and some are thick with a bit of wobbly. Confusion is seen here as the unsteadiness of the mind.

LOTS OF GLUE- the mixture of tears and mucus. First line ink is spread using toothpick, second uses wire dish scrub, third uses cotton ball. Exploring Sadness.

Dried appearance of glue. Like how its translucent sometime and create textured surface on the paper. I brought this piece to show Miss Joy during group consultation and she suggested i look into the properties of paper. So did I in my later stages of experiment!

Throwing of materials- Anger/ Rage

Result turn out disappointing because i wanted to see splatter brought out by throwing things.

Brought this up on group consultation and decided to reduce the amount of water and use more ink to get a bolder mark. (Suggested by Alyssa )

Got the result i wanted! It definitely look angry to me now! Tried out rolling the balls on the paper too.

Preparing to cultivate mould on paper for Disgust

Top 4 strips uses mascarpone cheese with different paper material and amount of water added to it. Lastly is overripe banana peel.

Forgotten to take photo of the end result after a few days. Basically the cheese didn’t rot after a few days which was against my expectation because it has the most moulds spotted compared to the other food in the youtube video. Self-experiment is really important. The banana peels on the bleedproof paper rot fast, turning complete black and leave lots brownish tiny spots on where it was. The inner side of the peels were still a bit moist. Cartridge paper did not have quite a good result as the banana peels have dried off making it hard to remove from the paper. It didn’t rot as fast as the one on bleeding paper too.

Bread moulds result was stunning, exactly how i wanted it to be in a short frame of 3 days.

First try with cooking oil and water. Viscosity and diffusion applied. Like the effect of how ink particles doesn’t spread in oil while water does the exact opposite. Such an interesting result on one piece of paper.

Trying out of different ink colour. White will fade as it break down into light grey in diffusion from oil to water.

Like the glow of cooking oil against the light. Thought of using it for attraction

Love the tiny vibrations on the thin line.

Wish i could replicate out the line. However after several trials of controlling the amount of oil with water and also where to put the oil so the big blop of water can “accidentally” interact with it. It was all futile attempts…

Flowers on monoprint

Feel like longing to me. The gentle gradient background and the jarring white blank petal have such strong contrast. The image keep calling out to me to put the flowers back to its own spot.

Failed piece. Look dull and flat.

Did monoprint for many leaves to do collage.

white vinegar and oil create such interesting texture to the paper! The combination of them break up the ink molecules and freeze them leaving clusters of short frenzy lines. At some point it even look like scumbling with gradient. Definitely worth exploring more!

Saw an elephant! The body of the “elephant” remind me of brain and the frenzy line linked me up to Fear! Afterall fear is all in the state of mind!

White vinegar and soda fuzzy and produce lots of bubbles. Really feel like a science experiment now 😀 However the result leave little to desire only grainy and slight smoky effect being noticed.

Glue is coated before adding paint through syringe. Love the gentle flowing line and bubbles.

Doesn’t this look like jellyfish?! <3 The bubbles made by the syringe are too thin so it cant last long before bursting. If it work, i would definitely go for AWE!

White vinegar with oil. The result is not that striking as compared to black ink on white paper.

Extroverts vs Introverts

The theme that i’m doing is on Extroverts vs Introverts.

Extroverts are outgoing, dramatic and expressive about their feelings. They get energized with a big groups of people and express their feelings in the raw state.

For this, i used primary and secondary emotions to show that they usually doesn’t filter their emotions regardless of where they are. They shine like a light in the public, so i usually use white paper to show their positiveness.

Introverts are shy,soft-spoken, passive, usually like to be alone and tend to think before speaking.

For this, i use tertiary emotions and black paper to express their complex feelings and their mental state.

As there can only be 3 not an even number of emotions in each category, i struggled to show the contrast emotions between extroverts and introverts. As such i decided to tell in a story format for the reason behind the placement of the lines.

Extroverts

Their origin of Love come from their family.

They have a strong Affections for being with people.

Being with their big group of friends make them Joyful.

They get lots of different emotions through the conversation with their friends such as Surprise or Stupefy when their friends said something super dumb.

Anger and Rage intertwined when they see someone they treasured get bullied.

There are times that they will feel Sad and Fear too because we are all humans.

Introverts

When they are Attracted to someone, they would behave Awkwardly in front of them. This make them feel Embarrassed and wish they could do better. Getting rejected by the one they love is like a shot in the heart, leaving Sorrow in them. People’s conflicts Disgust them and they would avoid them at all cost. They like their own personal space and not having it is akin to Claustrophobic. They like to Enjoy life, find Amazement in it and can be Lyrical sometimes too.

EXTROVERTS

Love

Process: My family and mine thumbprints on to the paper

Reasoning: All love origin from family so i used it. Elegant, gestural strokes show that the beautiful, timeless love between parents and child. The strokes are all connected no matter how fragile they seen to be. It show that no matter how tense or distance the relationship is, there will always be a line of connection that is unbreakable.

Affection

Process: My thumbprints

Reasoning: Somehow i was reminded of the love between extrovert and introvert. Extrovert tend to be more affectionate while introvert is passive. I use the gestural wind like movement in the beginning and show my thumbprints “chasing” after the wind (introvert), wanting to show affection.

Joy

Process: Collage of monoprint leaves.

Reasoning: Extroverts get their joy from being with people. Life is normally link to plant, so i want to use collage of plant to represent the people in extroverts’s life. For which i cut into different shapes of circles to show different part of leaves kind of like puzzle.

Problem: Initially thought of using milk, drops of paint and dish soap to create Joy. With the introduction of soap to the pool of milk with ink drops, there is a chemical reaction creating waves and pushing the ink into random direction. Feel like Joy for extrovert is like this because they would bounce everywhere when they are joyful or excited.

Surprise

Process: Syringe with white ink from high angle

Reasoning: Conversation is like injection of information from external source without the pain factor. Shock is expressed through the sharp pointy lines emerged from the spots of ink.

Problem: Initially wanted to show the flow of electricity on paper. Theory is use ferrofluid and spread it on a paper with saltwater. Ferrofluid is a liquid that has magnetic properties. Saltwater is a good conductor of electricity. Create a electrolytic cells connecting one end of battery to iron element and other to copper element. Since electricity affect the magnetic field, there maybe unexpected result on the movement of ferrofluid. Even without the magnet, ferrofluid may move itself because it contain iron in it so it may move towards copper element. However all this is just theory without experiment.

Tried making ferrofluid using laser jet toner and vegetable oil. Laser jet toner is said to contain iron particles so when magnet is near it, the liquid will become a ball of spikiness. However the toner in my house doesn’t have iron in it strangely. I feel disappointed to end an experiment that i was eager to work on.

Stupefy

Process: Syringe with ink from high angle and dabbling it with tissue.

Reasoning: The grey effect from using tissue to dabble it dull the whole picture. This reminded me of the brain stopped working because of the stupidity of the information.

Anger

Process: Throwing with golf ball and cotton ball and ink.

Reasoning: Throwing things in anger to show the emotion on paper. Controlled the amount of paint mix with water to get a bold splatter effect from the golf ball. From the left to the right, the anger get stronger as the imprint get more bolder.

Rage

Process: Punching with a plastic glove on

Reasoning: A larger intensified emotion is released out by punching. Plastic gloves created jagged lines because of the creases. The composition has more tension to it.

Sad

Process: Ink and glue

Reasoning: Extroverts are positive. Even though they are sad, it only for a while because they overcome it easily. Hence I didn’t cover up the whole paper with black. The streaks of black lines has mostly stop flowing down and so did not cover up that column on the left. I want to show that they have stopped feeling sad and start to go back to their cheerful self.

Fear

Process: Oil, white vinegar and ink.

Reasoning: Fear is all in the state of mind. It started out small with you breathing normally. As it progress, the fear manifested and you gasping for air. Eventually everything will calm down and return to normal. This whole line is done by the difference viscosity of white vinegar and oil to show the separation as seen on the left. Ink on the oil form small bubble like people breathing underwater. The short chaotic line caused by the white vinegar resembled the brain undergoing a shock state from fear.

INTROVERTS

Attraction

Process: Cooking oil, flower

Reasoning: Introverts does not express their emotions out well. On the surface they look like a blank paper, unreadable emotions. If they like someone, they will always be by their side, watching them and giving all their best to help the person. Deep down, their love for them is glowing like a bright star! Therefore i use the property that cooking oil glow under the light to show their deep attraction.

Doesn’t seem to glow too well because it’s been a few days already.

This is how the glow effect work at their best.

Awkward

Process: Separation using cooking oil and water. Ink dripped at the end.

Reasoning: Using the different viscosity of the two liquids, the ink pattern will be different. With the ink molecules maintaining their round form unable to blend in with the oil to the fluidity of ink inside water region, awkwardness is achieve. This show the feeling of introverts wanting to blend in with people and wish to “flow” well in conversation but they cant shake off the awkwardness.

Embarrassment

Process: Glue, ink spread with cardboard sheet.

Reasoning: Introverts get embarrassed easily. Overload the newsprint with glue will change the property of the paper making it translucent. I made the cross sign throughout the line to represent the unwillingness to be in view. However in reality as much as we want to hide away from people out of embarrassment, we cant do that. Hence, the see through hole in the middle of each “X”.

Sorrow

Process: Glue and ink spread with wire dish scrub.

Reasoning: Glue is a mixture of tears and mucus. To spread it with dish scrub with make the lines looks messy showing unsteadiness of one emotions. Hugh amount of black ink moving down represent the amount of tears flowing down, almost darkening one world. Introverts can be too emotional sometimes.

Disgust

Process: Rubbing mold bread on to the paper

Reasoning: There is no better way to express disgust than to use the rotten food to evoke that emotion. Rubbing rotten bread spread the moulds onto the paper. I can still smell the rotten bread in my room when i lay out the paper 🙁 I swirl the rotten food on the paper and let nature take its course on the paper. The end result is quite good as it look like waves of disgust about to consume me.

Moulds grow fast in my hostel than at home. Took 3 days only to become this state. Worry about my current state of living now.

Claustrophobic

Process: lighted incense

Reasoning: Introverts value their personal space. If taken away from them, in extreme case, they would have claustrophobic.

Showed a path of space getting narrower as it goes further. Eventually they give in to their fear and get trapped. Played with positive and negative spaces to tell the story. Used fire to show the unpleasantness of nature because incense create smoke and weird smell which i don’t like.

Enjoyment

Process: Oil, water and ink

Reasoning: Introverts enjoy being in small company. This image reminded me of the game called catching, I used to play that with my friend when i’m very young. The two slightly bend. gestural big dots with gradient shows movement. The smaller dots and ink in the water region pointing at the same direction towards the big dots add tension to the picture.

Amazement

Process: Spinning top with block ink.

Reasoning: The sharp rapid movement of lines in circular manner reminded me of sparkler. I would always feel amazed seeing fire shot out of it and yet i’m at such a close distance feeling oddly safe and loving it.

Lyrical

Process: Spinning top with acrylic paint.

Reasoning: With the use of a heavier density paint, the line created are thicker. I rolled my spinning top over some big blob of acrylic to spread it. The uncontrollable stroke create spontaneity in the paper, expressing lyrical.

The problems i faced in this project is the abstract nature of it making me hard to understand and see the link between things. It was hard for me to come up with a theme become i cant link my emotions. When i came up with a theme which is ninja’s fighting style, it is very vague and abstract again. Talking with my classmates and listening to the group consultation is very beneficial for me. I have a much clearer view and approach on how i want to start on my new theme- Extroverts and Introverts. I feel that this project help to train my sensitiveness to object and get in touch more deeply with my emotions. I deeply enjoy the experimenting part of it. Connect with my geeky side 😀

Monoprinting 1

First lesson on monoprinting.

Doesnt know what to expect, so i brought lots of things that could not be used in machine press.

Things that i brought: chocolate bar ( the sides have jagged pattern), wire ball dish scrub, spinning top, mini toy car, sponge, feather and leaves and twigs that i got on the way to school.

Rolling on the linomat to get an even coating. Reminded of wall painting

First try! So curious how its gonna look!

Thought i did something wrong only to know i have to do reverse mono-print

Not bad for 1st time. Like the small burst of light at the bottom that look like sparkler. Amazed at how the sandy twigs that i picked up create such an unexpected surprise

Leaf imprint

Achieved with the brown string in the lab

Here are two of my favorite pieces. Both have the gradient effect and were done through machine press.

Wires that drop out from dish scrub look like moving microorganism in the print.

Using plastic wrap and leftover string imprint from previous monoprint, the focus is at the plastic print leading to the slight visible trail of the strings.

This made me think that i can control the emphasis and tone i want on the subject by playing with the amount of imprint i get from it.

Other important things to note are the control of pressure and the choice of medium to get the imprint.
