A Journey through the carpark (Preview)

A Surveillance. Draft of all drafts

This video is just a preview, it really is the draft of all drafts. It does not include any audio, I’m still working on that. I have yet to edit the photos too in terms of brightness and saturation etc. I also realised some of the photos aren’t that good so I might have to change them.

With regard to my previous post, this preview strays a little bit away from my initial idea of a ‘documentary’. (I’m still trying to work it out.) This video covers a different aspect, one that involves the issue of privacy. It is really quite experimental. I was trying out After Effects, trying to mimic surveillance camera footage and decided to try it out in my video.

The issue I had with the documentary idea is that I am completely terrified of using voiceover, to me it seems like a make or break thing. Finding a suitable voice would also be a problem.  I find that in some occasions, the voiceover could overpower the visuals and I don’t want that. I’d much rather have the photos speak for themselves, though I know I run the risk of nobody knowing what’s going on in the video. I guess that’s for me to figure out. I might try to incorporate the ‘surveillance’ footage and my photos with captions instead of voice overs.

Assignment 2: Conceptualising the idea

Video coming soon.

I had quite a bit of difficulty coming up with a good feasible concept for this assignment. The ideas I had for this project ranged from covering the then ongoing general elections to documenting the journey and lives of construction workers in Singapore.

The reason why my very first idea did not work was because of time constraints. There were too many events (e.g. rallies) happening concurrently within a short period of time thus making it difficult to take sufficiently good photographs.

My second idea also posed a challenge, as I knew some of the photos I wanted to take would be close to impossible; one example would be that I would not be able to document the foreign workers’ dormitories, as I would not have had access to them. The photographs that I could have taken would have been very limited. I also found out after the lesson on week 5 that this topic had already been explored in more depth than I could ever have done by my professor, so I decided to change my idea to something that was hopefully fresh and exciting.

There was some mention about being ‘scientific’ in week 5 and I decided to explore the scientific realm but I still did not know what photos to take or how to link science with the topic of ‘Journey’. While walking home one day, I decided to explore the multi-storey car park. Low and behold, I managed to find some interesting areas and items in the carpark (I also managed to somehow get lost). That was how I decided that I would base the project on the multi-storey carpark, a facility that seems to be highly underappreciated despite being used often by many.

Currently I’m thinking of making the story similar to an animal documentary except that the animals are automobiles ‘resting’ in their natural habitat. That would be my attempt to merge science with the project. I suppose there would be some sort of humour and cynicism to my project. But that’s just one story idea, another idea would probably be the exploration of a familiar yet unfamiliar place and trying to escape, I’ll have a clearer idea as I put my project together.

Assignment 1: Self-Portrait (final)

‘The Lost Road’

This photographic series entitled ‘The Lost Road’ includes three black and white photographs. They depict my current thoughts and mindset about my life. I wanted to portray a more sombre mood with this series. As a whole, they represent my desire to find a good ending in life, something that I can eventually achieve after all the work and energy that I have spent. I currently feel that I am working hard with no end goal in mind and that has resulted in me feeling really lost and in dire need to find the light at the end of the tunnel. The everyday has become very mundane and a struggle as I slowly run out of motivation.

These are the photos from my final work for this assignment.

The first photograph in the series represents my ascend and progression in life. It is a slow, tiresome and lonely ascend. As with everyone else’s life, there are also ups and downs. The ‘light at the end of the tunnel’ is represented in the second photo in the series. There are many objects which we tend use everyday but never really stop to notice their importance. These objects could be used for long periods of time, working non-stop for hours. One of these objects for me would be the fan. It is a pretty simple machine, often overlooked but used quite frequently. I would liken myself to the fan, working as best as it can but does not really go anyway, stagnant to say the least.

Assignment 1 (work in progress)

Photos (drafts) for assignment 1

Self-Portrait

There are two different sets of photographs in this post, one set from my original idea and the other, from my new idea. The original idea was to portray myself through the contents of the refrigerators in my house since to me there really is nothing more unnerving than a stranger looking at the contents of your fridge, what you have inside and how items are arranged, it speaks volumes about one. However, the photos did not seem to be able to tell viewers much about me as a person since the fridges were also shared by my family members. Thus, these photos were not so suitable for the assignment of self-portrait.

Here are the photos from my old idea.
