Final Lines Work-in-progress 4: When one table is not enough, use 2

Standard

FINALLLLYYY i am almost there! After i got most of my lines settled, i worked to confirm the emotions once again. I felt that this was a better way for me as I didn’t only want to see the lines as a single thing. I wanted all of the 4 panels to flow like how emotions are all related to each other and turn into one another.

20150910_001002-33

I tagged each lines to the emotions, by feeling how it comes across to me and also little notes to why this particular line suits this emotion

20150910_000914-32

20150910_001012-3420150910_211106-5520150910_023101-51

I purposely didnt want to cut the lines into the correct size or stick them down to the frames until i am completely sure that that is what i wanted. I wanted to have the freedom to keep changing and finding the arrangement that i like.

With the bird’s eye view of everything,i will know what worked and what didn’t. I didn’t like the current lyrical, but i like the medium (glass deco ink) but the lines made here didn’t resound to me as lyrical, hence i went to make a new one.

Feels more lyrical now, isnt it?

One collage that i really like

One collage that i really like ^^

20150910_233912-59

Once i have more or less confirm the postions of the lines in each panel, its cutting time! (It was such a challenge to cut them as I was afraid that there would be something wrong or i might see something better after i cut) However, i guess this is also part of the process, learning to accept what I have done and also be brave.

20150910_232817-58

My first cut.

AND ITS DONE!!!! it may look like a simple process but the cutting and placing them at the correct position took me so long ;A;

These are some of the monoprint materials leftover that i used. Thought they would make interesting lines and variation too.

20150907_004503-13

I love the gaps that were created inbetween

toiletpaper

They were messy if it was place as the lines directly. I scaned them in and the lines look wonderful

20150909_230512-30

trying out to see if i can collage in the kitchen towels into the shapes

20150910_020617-50

I also tried cutting out the kitchen towels in pieces to collage them into a line

20150912_210520

This is the piece of plastic that i used as a base for the monoprinting ink. And i thought why not? let me make something with this too. So i crushed the plastic and did scratching and swirls on it. The result wasnt as good as i predicted it might be, but it was a good experiment

20150912_210607 copy

And of course, i will need to print it on paper. it was printed without any rollers, I simply used my hands to press the ink down

While i was placing the lines, i also suddenly had an idea of scratching the paper with a needle.

Scan 6

It was on a small piece of paper as i wasnt sure how it would turn out

20150912_205945 copy

and i decided to try it on a full A3 size paper. The marks above were made when the paint is not completely dry, I liked that effect better compared to the ones that were made after the paper dried completely (bottom)

Referencing is really important: Lines can be found and used everywhere?!

While i was browsing for books in the ADM library, I accidentally came across this artist, Antony Gormley. He is a British sculpture that has made a huge amount of interesting installations at many places.

I have mainly picked out his installations which are related to our project!

20150901_165917

This is a series he made, showing the energy of a human possess. really love the “eplosive” lines

I didnt have a chance to use these in my project time time, but it is definitely useful for further projects and inspirations.

Up Next is Peter Foucault! Thin lines, Collage (i need to this this), robot drawings, somewhat probably inspired by Jackson Pollock too?

These are created with swinging of the dust wiping brush with chinese calligraphy ink!

Several more tries.

The sense of direction and the aggressiveness from the brush strokes

The ink blots are left by having the ink on the previous pages passed through. They are joined up like “connect the dots” with the glass deco liner

Marks are created randomly with splatters and a wooden stick dipped in ink. Combination of Sol LeWitt and Peter?

20150901_161828

Surprising Monoprint that created surprising results~

Peter Foucault’s works are a mix of precision vs energy. There is a sense of wildness u see in Pollock’s work and yet the details in LeWitt’s works. He is really an interesting artist i want to know more about. It helped alot in my

I really had fun during these creation. It was a mix of “wanting to know what you want to do” and “be bold and forget about whatever restrictions”.

With the proper researches that i did, i had a few references artist in mind. Mainly they are Jackson Pollock, Peter Foucault, Sol LeWitt, a little bit of Andy Warhol and Alexander Cozens.

Lets start with Jackson Pollock! Unrestricted lines! Curves! Strength! Flow! Action!

I remember one of his techniques was to use the Japanese paper, and making the ink seep through. Hence i increased the amount of ink used on the first sheet to create these. (i had 3 to four paper)

2015-09-03-23-24-36_deco

I really love this. The Energy that can be seem merely from these strokes. Powerful strokes (and splattered ink) in one direction

They are mainly created using Chinese rice paper, Copier Paper and with Chinese ink and Poster colour.

Early Monoprints and automated techniques

Image

Monoprinting when i didnt have any reference artists in mind. Just doing whatever that came to mind.

20150901_160850

This was very interesting as this print is actually created by wiping the glass table with ink on it. As I realised that it actually creates interesting visual texture, i decided to swirl it to create a sense of direction/movement

20150901_160923

With the link on the table(again) i decided to dilute it with water at certain areas and added some paint. I also used the spray bottle(sprayed on table) before gently pressing my paper on top

20150901_161000

Another attempt at table wiping, those strong lines at the end are actually…… (fingers)

20150901_161358

This idea was actually created by twisting and twirling kitchen towels and pressing them using the machine (inspired by Lipeng’s prints). I really like the mini textured lines that was printed too. And of course, i did not throw the kitchen towels away! They are valuable and they are printed with ink too!

20150901_161421

Masking tape creates great block out~ and very clear negative spaces

20150901_161555

reprinting of the same tissues?paper?

20150901_161540

20150901_161630

I used the roller and pressed some ink on one side of the paper. Was thinking of trying out Rorschach Technique, folded the paper into half and this was what it created. It didnt have the same value because the ink has already been half dried? I suppose i will need a wet ink to create that

20150901_161649

usually we will only think of using pencil with brass rubbing techinique, however i had this checkered cloth, and was wondering if it will work with ink too? And indeed it did!

20150901_161736

This was probably done with tea leaves~

20150901_161810

I was just drawing and splashing ink on the plate itself directly

20150901_161838

The papers used here came really useful during my creation of lines XD

20150901_161905

SPLATTER!! and letting ink drip. One of the more natural way to see how ink flows~ It kinda look like a giraffe with a tree isnt it ww

20150901_161921

FUMAGE ON PAPER TOWEL! it was easier to get marks on here..maybe because its thinner? however it is easier to “brown” the surface too

20150901_161932

FUMAGEEE on drawing paper. I really like doing this ^^

20150901_161946

Fumage on chinese rice paper. Due to the super thin paper, it got burnt easily

20150901_162021

Strings and ink. look at those furry ends. i love them

20150901_162210

Mini Flowers?ww

20150901_162219

The patterns created by this fern is really unique <3

20150901_162245

They look like they are drawn by a almost dried flat tip marker

20150901_162259

double print on one surface~loved that “shadow”/depth effect created with each tape

20150901_161144-min

This was another one created with spraying and “cleaning” the table

20150901_161703-min

Rolling the roller multiple times on different paper creates a different texture

This is a gallery of automated techniques and monoprints that i did earlier! As they are all in A3 size, i wont be able to put much of the original prints in my sketchbook and it would be a waste to not document these.

Peter Foucault! and some of my works

Standard

With some researching on the internet, i found another artist that creates interesting works! The artist is Peter Foucault.

In his latest series, he created a robot which can perceive sound, making use of sound in the environment to create art pieces! The art piece created is similar to automated techniques due to the end result cannot be predicted due to the never constant human traffic.

Some of his other art works,

It was initially just twigs and dried leaves when i first started out the monoprint. As i continued on, i didnt want to destroy the design that were made earlier, hence i used the twigs to splat ink and draw lines randomly. I am quite pleased that it came out so nice! Time for more experiment!!

These are the works that i really like from Jackson Pollock. The depth and the movement that can be seen from these random lines. I will definitely try this.

20150901_183326

i like these simple, flowly lazy looking lines

20150901_183342

the splashes is definitely something that i will try to include within my creations

20150901_183400

they look like cute little spirits dancing

Other than the very dense pieces like above, these were a series that caught my attention too! Its not very complicated but with this limited amount of strokes and splashes, the effect and emotion that is created is very impactful.

While reading the interviews found in “Jackson Pollock Works|Writing|Interviews”, i found something very useful.

20150901_183626

It is regarding the technique he uses to create some of this art.

20150901_183637

The way different papers work is something that I need to considered too.

The sentence he said that hit me really hard. And something that i feel that we should consider about.
