Project 3 (Next Task)

Standard

continue from task 1

From the feedback and mistakes made previously, I came up a new design:

  • Using Complementary color to color code the different pages.
  • (Orange page) Using matching illustration to fill up the empty page.
  • (Green page) Simplify the illustration (so it can be identity by the phone)  and provide visual cue as the page’s number.
  • Give a lot of bleeding to prevent misalignment

Results:

Border for the instruction

More issues:

Misalignment due to the thickness of paper

Messy layout

Weird imaginary

Bleeding issue and more misalignment

Viewer cannot flip back the brochure accordingly.

Feedback:

  • Leading
  • Narrow margin
  • Remove unnecessary border to resolve the misalignment issue
  • Emphasis on the numbers
  • Shift the game’s instruction to it’s own page

Project 3 (Task 1: Design Exploration)

Standard

1. Existing brochure design

Using illustration and it’s color to differentiate how it is going to look when folded and open.

Using folds and die-cut to make the illustrations from different page appear to be a single image.

Using cute illustrations and die-cut to differentiate the pages.

2. Playing with folds

I will be working on my own FYP which is a mobile app for students learning Chinese. This app consists of 3 games and each game require an image to trigger the game (AR).

What I mean by an image to trigger the game:

First mock-up

  1. I started with a simple 2-page fold, with my mascot at side.

2. Then I cut off the edge so the page looks like a speech bubble.

3. But when I open the folds, I realized the paper is too weak.

Second mock up

1. For the 2nd mock-up, I started with a 4-page vertical fold with the mascot in mind.

2. With this layout, I am able to put emphasis on the mascot and make the brochure ‘more 3D’.

3. However the first page is wasted with the cut.

Third Mock-up

As this brochure is about a Chinese education game, it will be interesting if the brochure itself is able to teach the viewer Chinese. Hence I came up with the idea of folding according to the stroke’s order of 火 (le mascot).

  1. I started with the cut out of the individual stroke. With the individual page I am able to visualize how it should be folded to follow the stroke’s order and where can be cut and where can the information be placed.
  2. With the order in mind, I came out with this fold ^

3.  Next, to test the layout and cut, I did a quick mock-up in AI and printed out to check the result.

Selected folds : Mock-up 3

The idea of this entire page is to have all the image in one page so that the viewer and scan all the images without flipping and is able to read the overview as they go through the game.

How the brochure work:

The front of page 1 is the Logo and short intro of the app and the back of page 1 is the overview of the app.

The front of page 2 is the instruction of the first game and the back is the image that will trigger the  game.

The front of page 3 is the instruction of the second game and the back is the image that will trigger the game.

The front of page 4 is the instruction of the third game and the back is the image that will trigger the game.

The last page contains the QR code to download the app.

Feedback:

The instruction’s page is not interesting enough. The back of the brochure when folded look weird.

First print out:

After printing this in A2, I realized the photograph and illustrations look like 2 separate design. So I decided to add more illustration on the photograph.

Final print out

To summarized my take for this assignment, the poster is not about escaping reality or a program that will cure the patient, it is about how the program is able to change the way the patient look at their own condition. As I believe Art and Health shouldn’t be a program that will only help the patient to forget about their problem temporary but a program that will benefits the patient in a long term which is to guide them to see another perspective of life and then to keep them positive.

From the feedback received, I have changed the slogan to “The Happiness From Arts” , so it sound like the program is able find the patient’s happiness back.

2 Proposed layouts:

The symmetrical layout: The poster is differentiated with 2 sides, the left side is the side of life with Art and Health program which is presented with color and fun illustrations, another side is another side of life without Art and Health program which is darker and boring.

Asymmetrical layout: Emphasis on the fun side which is the side of life with Art and Health program.

Feedback:

Play around with the fonts, so that it can direct the way.

Play with the font so the image and the word are one.

Other feedback:

  • Character a bit scary
  • Character should potentially be a patient from Ng Teng Fong hospital. The race and the age of the patient.
  • Different side should have different clothes
  • Tagline should be bigger
  • Flow not strong enough

My take on Art and Health program:

Art and Health program is targeted for patients who will be hospitalized for a long period for time, as short-term patients are usually rushed to discharge to not waste resources. Hence my take for the poster should be something the long-term patients can relate to, things that can be found in their surroundings, which is the hospital’s equipment. Reason is because, I want them to believe that whatever is shown in the poster is achievable with their conditions, and they will really be benefited by participating in the program and not something that seem unreachable with their conditions.

Another target audience of the poster are the visitors or the short-term patients that can potentially be the volunteers of the program. The idea is to gain their empathy from the condition of the long-term patient, show them how trapped the patients are feeling. The poster should give a different vibe from the other publicity materials to show the contrast of the life of the patients and a normal life.

Brainstorm map:

Moodboard:

Sketches of my designs:

Chosen Slogan: Art Changes Life

Idea 1: A patient participating in Arts and Health program changing sad emoticons to happy emoticons. This show how Arts and Health program can change the life of a gloomy patient.

Idea 2: (Mixed media, Photography with digital illustrations) A patient lying on the hospital bed with fun illustrations around the patient. This show how Arts and Health program can change the low spirits place to a better (fun) place.
