Yeah! Final submission! Project 1 is over! Total there are six pieces of mark making to be submitted. In this section, I will stated the definition, technique and tool, and finally description of the work.

Name: Attraction

Definition: Attraction means a person or thing draw your attention [1]

Interpretation: A person who get my attention or I draw the person attention unintentionally. This attraction will make me want to know more about the person and vice versa. And this attraction may or may not lead to relationship.

Technique & tool: Paper cutting method to create the white lines and pasted over a grey paper. The grey paper was painted with mixture of Chinese ink and water. It is painted with gradient from dark to light. The light part is to show the main subject which is the connection of two different parts. Furthermore it is to show the sparkle of connection.

Description: In this case, I represent a rare case that both parties attracted to each other. When they attracted to each other there is a tiny connection between them. Hence a line connected between two ends.

However, it is just one thin line connected and not many lines are connected because the attraction only happens in a moment. The parties do not know each other and if they get to know each other, either the attraction is gone or they feel more for each other. As they feel more, all the lines will connect together and form a thick line. This thick line formed by many thin lines I called it as love. Love to me is a strong feeling. It does not come easily and go off easily. Hence many lines come together and tangled represent love.

Why I choose paper cutting because I saw a few works in googled that fascinated me. The artist create many strands of hair by paper cutting. I find it is challenging and delicate. I loved how I can see the flow of each strand of hair and the complexity. Thus, I want to challenge myself and at the same time, I want to tell love comes from amount of effort. If attraction can lead to love, there is a lot of time spend to nurture it.

Example of paper cutting for hair:

Name: Hope

Definition: To want something to be true or happen and normally have good reason to think it might happens [2]

Interpretation: It is an unsure feeling that whether I will succeed or not but more on positive side that I believe I will succeed. For example, I have cancer and was incurable for that time until someone invented a new medicine to test out, i feel there is hope. I feel there is something to help me, it may not succeed but i wish it would succeed. There is something to expect for my illness to be healed.

Technique & tool: The method for this piece is simple, just tear the papers and pasted each papers over one another to form different layers. Then correction pen was used for white dots. I neither have done any research for this method nor reference from any artist. I wanted to have a random fuzzy marks for the black paper hence tearing would seem to be a suitable way.

Description: The middle part represents hope and it is spreading its light throughout the darkness. The darkness represents negative feeling such as feeling of devastated. When there is something positive to expect, the positive feeling slowly spread out. The white lines with little tiny dots represent the positive feeling. However the hope is not fully white because, hope do not guarantee the result is what it is expected.

Name: Amazement

Definition: Amazement which means extreme surprise [3]

Interpretation: My definition is combination of overwhelming surprise and thrill or excitement. If I felt amazed is not just merely surprised but I also felt thrill. For example if I went to Flower Dome in Marina Bay Garden for viewing Sakura, I was amazed by the beauty of Sakura and felt excited and pleasure at the same time.

Technique & tool: I used Chinese ink and painted by the bottom of a small bottle. It is not a full circle. For the outline of the circle, I used broken glasses to pull the ink. The white circling line, I used correction pen to scribble around.

Description: The circles represent surprise and the white line represent excitement or thrill. When I am happy or in excitement, my body language is not still, I would move or dance a little hence the white circling line represent my body language when I am happy.

Name: Irritation

Definition: A feeling of slightly angry or annoyed [4]

Interpretation: Someone who get on my nerve but I did not explode to anger. Just slightly angry and would control this anger until my limits.

Technique & tool: I used Chinese ink and used broken glasses to draw the lines. It is perfect tool for this emotion as it has sharp edge. When I used it to draw the line, the sharpness of the line is shown.

Description: Irritation is different from anger. Anger is more explosive like storm and thunder but irritation is slightly anger so I did not draw the lines very dramatic. The anger in irritation still able to control so the line are together and with systematic rhythm. However, each time I try to control my anger, there are sharp lines trying to provoke me.

Amount of time spent: 30 mins

Name: Grief

Definition: Extreme sadness especially by someone’s death [5]

Interpretation: It is an intense sorrow that I can’t see any happy things in my life.

Technique & tool: I used burning method for Grief. And pasted the papers into different layers.

Description: The first thought came to my mind when I see burning of papers is death. We burned things for death so in next life or they are in other world, they live comfortably. Therefore, this piece of work is related to grief. Moreover, the white part represent positive energy. However, when I am in sorrow because of someone’s death, the energy is low and the darkness would envelope my positive energy. I could only see darkness in the world. It is hard to be parted from the loved one.

I used reference from Kate MccGwire, an sculpture artist. She has this piece of work burned. I like the burning lines and there are many layers of paper. If I have more time I would like to try putting more layers of paper. However, simple is good too.

Name: Fear

Definition: An unpleasant emotion due to there is something dangerous/threatening you are worry or frighten even it may not happen [6]

Interpretation: An emotion that caused by insecurity. For instance, stepping out of my comfort zone, I will scare of unexpected event happens (negatively).

Technique & tool: I used Chinese ink mix with chili sauce to get the texture of the lines. And used paint brush to make the strokes. After that I used wood knife to make the lines. The background I used clay and tooth for making the marks.

Description: Most of the time I feel fear hence I get used to the fear. The systematic flow shows the constant fear. So whenever I stepped out my comfort zone, this fear just flow silently. The background showed the uneasiness and scary is to represent the outside the comfort zone.

Amount of time spent: An hour plus
