Project 3: EGO designs

1. ALONE + OUT AT SEA = REFLECTIVE

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

When I am alone, especially in bed at night, I have a tendency to overthink about life in general. Be it thinking about work, self-doubt, relationships or the future. Because I am alone, I have no need to put up a front for anyone else and I am bare/transparent to my own feelings and emotions.

MeProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset

Hence this is depicted in the “ME” through the use of reflective paper and a transparency which I drew of myself to represent transparency and reflectiveness of self. Initially when i came up with this idea. I just wanted to stick the transparency on the reflective paper. But when i put the two together, I found that the reflectiveness of the paper creates a 3 dimensional feel if i elevate the transparency which creates the illusion of “2 MEs”. I thought this was a perfect representation of how torn i feel sometimes when I am alone. Torn between the feeling of being optimistic or pessimistic and self-love or self-doubt.

SETTINGProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset

The setting I chose were waves to represent “waves of emotions” or the tranquility I feel when I am alone much like the feeling when I am out at sea. The waves were presented with different colors to show the different emotions such as jealousy, sadness, love and happiness.

screen-shot-2016-11-15-at-12-08-16-amscreen-shot-2016-11-15-at-12-18-33-amscreen-shot-2016-11-15-at-12-26-03-am

I played around with the different compositions, printed it on transparency and pasted it on white paper.

OUTCOMEProcessed with VSCO with a6 preset

The outcome of the two would be reflective. I actually struggled a bit with the composition of this but i decided to slice up an image of waves and paste it over reflective paper to show the feeling of being torn in the midst of self discovery.

2. UNINSPIRED+EXPLORING NEW PLACES= INSPIRED

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Often when I travel, I feel greatly inspired and a sense of enlightenment from discovering new places and meeting new places.

Process
I wanted to try something different and experimented with the use of paper collage. I cut up different patterns, shapes and color from magazines to create texture and shapes. I also made use of paint to further bring emphasis to the idea. Dull colours= uninspired, Bright colours= inspired. I also tried to make it more interesting by sticking cardboard behind to make it “pop-up”.

3. WITH STRANGERS+MEETING NEW PEOPLE=HESITANT

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

For this, I chose to use analogous colours such as blue, green and purple to create a serene and comfortable design. I also chose to use cooler tones to portray the idea of how much more introverted or not as expressive I am especially when I am meeting new people.

Me ( with strangers )

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

I posterized a picture of myself on photoshop and painted a self portrait using hues of purple, blue and green. I also added a touch of neon paint in my designs to further enhance the colours better. For the background I was inspired by the references below of using unmixed acrylic paint to create splashes of colour.

Setting ( Meeting New People )Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

For the setting I decided to portray a person or “stranger” in a completely different style in contrast to the “me” to show the disparity when meeting a stranger. I also chose to block out his eyes as when you’re meeting a stranger, you know nothing about him or his identity. After putting the pieces though, I felt like maybe the style choice for this design was too much of a contrast and the piece as a whole kind of lose its cohesiveness. But I guess this is a learning point for me to take note of in future projects.

Outcome ( Hesitant )Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

When meeting a stranger, I would feel hesitant to be myself hence, only a small part of my true self is revealed as seen above. I got inspired by this idea from Shura’s album cover which I thought was quite an interesting idea of incorporating b&w with a real photo.

This is in contrast with my previous row but with friends. I chose to use warmer analogous colours such as red, orange and yellow as with friends, I feel more comfortable in my own skin.

REFLECTION

This project has mostly been experimental for me with the use of colours, collage, paint and different mediums which are all a first for me. I think there is definitely a lot to learn from this project and Im excited to apply these techniques learned again in future projects with perhaps some digital painting involved. I have definitely learned and experimented a lot which i feared would cost the style to become inconsistent. I guess it is all part of the learning process and I am glad I took the risk to try things I never thought I would have attempted.

Project 3: EGO Research

The last project of the sem! For this project, we had to come up with a set of ourselves in 4 different settings and their outcome.

  • bold graphic, prints and loud neon colors
  • geometric shapes and motifs
  • “80s scientific aesthetics”
  • “neon-noir”

I chose to use the color scheme of 80s illustrations as I love the use of bold colors and graphics and I wanted to incorporate these elements into my designs.

Project 3: Mis En Scene

Moving On is a short film based off a set of 6 lines we had to incorporate in our film.

“Is this worth it in the end?”

“I trust you.”

“You are confused.”

“Have you forgotten what I wanted?”

“Damn it!”

“Trust me!”

This short film explores the relationship between two people and their struggle to move on with life as their relationship falls apart.

Project 1B: In a world …(Sequential Image)

A continuation from our previous project, we had to come up with 5 images or a mini storyboard.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

The story starts off with Christopher Turner being left at the door step of Margret’s Orphanage.

Processed with VSCO with a6 preset

Subsequently, as Christopher grows up, he finds himself as the only “elderly child” in the orphanage. While everyone around him grows older, he ages backwards and grows younger.

Christopher starts becoming a drug dealer.

And he lands himself in lifetime imprisonment.

The story ends with Christopher being left to die at the same orphanage he grew up in but this time round as a young infant.

Project 2: Forrest Gump Process

In project 2, we were tasked to make 4 visual images from movie quotes using symbols, pictograms, engravings, dingbats, vintage woodcut etc.

“Sometimes it’s the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine.”

Dreamscapes: Matt Wisniewski’s Digital Collages

Art for art’s sake is no new conceit. But Wisniewski has created a particularly successful iteration by overlaying portraits with organic patterns—from flowers to jagged peaks to a Rorschach blot. He came to the combination through experimentation. “It just sort of clicked,” he says. “Natural elements tend to be a little simpler and fit together a bit more obviously with the portraits than urban elements.”

mountain-people

I was thinking of incorporating mountainous landscapes to symbolise the act of “doing things no one can imagine”. Mountains can be used to symbolise obstacles faced and challenges of being different in a society that ostraciszes individuality. Much like the character in the movie, Alan Turing was scritinized for being gay during an unenlightened british establishment. Mountains are also a symbolism of imagination and how high imagination can take you if you let it run free.

Initial designs

However, I wasn’t that happy with how the designs turned out so I came up with new ones that i felt represented the quote better visually.

Revised Designs

design #1imagination1

design #2imagination2

I used an Armillary Sphere to represent the head of the guy and constellations at the base of his feet.

Armillary Sphere

It was used as a navigation tool used for determining the position of the Sun and stars by sailors for navigating. They were models of what scientists thought the heavens looked like and how they were suppose to have moved.

SYMBOLISM: the armillary sphere, an invention that revolutionized the study of earth, time and space. Much like Alan Turing’s invention that was an early model for our computers today.

Constellations

SYMBOLISM: representing the wealth of imagination

In the end, I decided to go with design #2 as I felt like composition looked better as a whole compared to design #1.

The idea of the quote was that Mark Watney was able to colonise Mars to grow crops for survival and I got the inspiration for the 3rd design from the photo reference of the spaghetti and meatballs. I thought it was pretty apt by having gardening tools protruding out of the moon to show the humour evoked in his statement.

All Strings Attached

For our second project, we had to create string scupltures using plastic sheets and thread. I first started out experimenting with shapes to create planes for the ” skeleton” of my sculpture.

Model #1

The first model was done using vanguard sheets and thread. I drew two diamond shapes attached to a circle and poked holes along the edges of the diamond and threaded it to the diameter of the circle. Initially, I wanted the thread to interweave in between one another but it failed as it was hard to do so without the thread disrupting one another ( as seen in the second picture). Despite this setback and the flimsiness of the paper, I really liked the structure of it as a whole and proceeded on to my final model.

Model #2

The final model was definitely much firmer and the tension between the strings were much easier to achieve. I started out placing a paper at the base of the structure so that it was easier to mark out the points I wanted to thread.

Project 2: “Forrest Gump” Quotes

For our second project “Forrest Gump” , we were required to look for 4 quotes and create 4 images based on these quotes. Here are the quotes that I’ve chosen.

“Sometimes it’s the very people who no one imagines anything of who do the things no one can imagine.” – Joan Clarke, The Imitation Game

Synopsis:

Based on the real-life story of Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), who is credited with cracking the German Enigma code, The Imitation Game portrays the nail-biting race against time undertaken by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park, during the darkest days of the Second World War.Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war and saved thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British establishment, but his work and legacy live on.

hell-yeah-im-a-botanist-fear-my-botany-powers

“Hell yeah im a botanist! Fear my botany powers!”– Mark Watney, The Martian

Synopsis:

When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney (Matt Damon), presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.

“You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” – Harvey Dent, The Dark Knight

“Madness is like gravity, all it takes is a little push.” – The Joker, The Dark Knight

Synopsis:

Set within a year after the events of Batman Begins, Batman, Lieutenant James Gordon, and new district attorney Harvey Dent successfully begin to round up the criminals that plague Gotham City until a mysterious and sadistic criminal mastermind known only as the Joker appears in Gotham, creating a new wave of chaos. Batman’s struggle against the Joker becomes deeply personal, forcing him to “confront everything he believes” and improve his technology to stop him. A love triangle develops between Bruce Wayne, Dent and Rachel Dawes.

Project 1B: The secret life of Christopher Turner

“It’s a funny thing about comin’ home. Looks the same, smells the same, feels the same. You’ll realize what’s changed is you.”

In a world plagued by the normality of everyday routines, there lives a boy not quite like any other. Christopher Turner was not like any normal 12 year old. He had a wizened face and a back slightly hunched. His twinkling eyes were framed by thick white eyebrows and on his stubbled chin were white whiskers. Christopher may be 12 years of age but his body was that of an old man about to reach the end of his time. However, for each year that is added to Christopher’s age, his body grows stronger, his sight grows sharper and his limbs move faster. In a world where he’s the only one moving backwards, Christopher is faced with many difficult life situations and challenges. However, before we embark on the secret life of Christopher Turner, we would have to go back to the spring of 1945 when he landed himself into Orange County’s state prison.

My storyline was mainly inspired by the movies ShawShank Redemption and The Curious case of Benjamin Button. I was really intrigued by the idea of a person aging backwards and thought it would be really interesting to see what it would be like if the person were to live his life in prison. The idea of him getting younger as the people around him ages away in life long confinement.
