Apologies for the tardy update!

I’m actually kind of stuck in a rut for this project: it’s too open and I have no idea where to start from or where I want to go. Since the “Tale of Three Jimmy-s” idea was the one that I received the most amount of feedback on, I think that would be the idea I’ll be working on.

In the table are some rough notes I have on each of the Jimmy-s from my notes on the story:

I’ve shortlisted a bunch of issues in the 3 Jimmy-s’ lives that I might want to take a look at but at this point, I’m still working on the actual captions themselves.

  • Glasses/sight from the POV of Jimmy is ?.
  • Family from the POV of Jimmy is ?.
  • Dreams from the POV of Jimmy are dead.
  • Money from the POV of Jimmy is ?.
  • Age from the POV of Jimmy is ?.

I can’t seem to decide if I want each composition to consist of all 3 Jimmy-s or have one of each but visually, I think it would be interesting to play with how a typical HDB looks since they’re all supposed to be neighbors.

Hopefully I can make up my mind and have some sketches down by consults!

ARTIST REFERENCES

I’m personally hoping to go for a more illustrative style this time round. Since the concept is somewhat a narrative and also has social commentary takes to it, I felt that the cues of comics and illustrations found in newspapers could be apt.

Below are some of the artist references I’ve shared in class; while some may no longer be relevant to my project, I’m sure the others can find use for them!

Anders Nilsen

I first discovered his works in the Rage of Poseidon and I think what I really want to master from his works is his ability to convey the story in his works.

On the other hand, drawing the compositions in a weird cartoonish way would draw some interesting dissonance as well.

Comics, in general

Jamie McKelvie - Young Avengers

As mentioned, I wanted to visually play with the arrangement of HDB houses since the 3 Jimmy-s are neighbors. I’m an avid reader of comics and I’ve always loved unorthodox paneling choices, especially when used in page spreads so I figured this could be an area to look into.

Riley Rossmo - Constantine: The Hell Blazer 002

For instance, there is a sense of movement in the above page spread with Constantine walking across the apartments, showing what’s going on in the insides as well with the panels arranged in a collage-ish manner to tell more of the story.

J. H. Williams III - Batwoman 027

Another artist that does this exceptionally well is J. H. Williams III who often seem to regard page spreads as a single large image itself by juxtaposing panels into objects in the scene and scattering dialogue, characters and backstory around.

The downside to this is that the final compositions are supposed to be A5 sized.

One of my favorite illustrators of all time just aesthetically speaking. Not very sure if this style would tie in with project anymore

He has a very visually witty style to his works that I think a lot of the others might find useful.
