Final Pieces! :D

Hi again!

Here are my final pieces!

First piece: A pair of boots and helmet. These are the necessities for entering a construction workplace. Safety is key in Singapore. Work done with charcoal. I love how beautifully charcoal can be smoothed out on paper.

Second Piece: A foreign worker who hides his emotions behind his smiles. Done with HB, 2B, 4B and 6B pencils. Occasional help from my handy mechanical pencil. Pencil and cotton bud played a part in texturing his skin. Outlined his headgear with charcoal, hoping to achieve a boomz effect where the focus is on his expression.

3rd Piece: Blue Star Dormitory. Done with my all time favorite pen, uni-ball Signo DX 0.28. My Pentel Marker helps in defining some of the thicker lines. And a little charcoal bits for shading.

And I thought I should also upload the one that I had done before my final piece. I kind of add some details without looking at the bigger picture. Thus I felt some parts are overly dark (mainly done with my thicker china pen instead of uni-ball 0.28). Thus I decide to redo it with a much cleaner profile.

Final Project Research — Construction

Hi there!

My topic of Documentary was on Construction. These are my research materials that I manage to source online. Starting with mainstream ideas of what construction is about.

Then I went on to find pictures of construction workers in Singapore. The reason for the dormitory photo in the middle depicts the environment these workers live in so that they can bring us beautifully built HDB flats, pave out the roads and work on our transport systems.

These images in squares are photos that were taken by me while I was out finding ideas to draw. The first page is construction works happening around my neighborhood.

Some of the ones below are also taken near my neighborhood and some were near pioneer MRT.

Remember the middle photo of the dormitory that I mention of above? That dormitory is called Blue Star Dormitory. It is located a few bus stops away from Pioneer MRT. In June 2016, this was the first dormitory that was being fined for housing too many foreign workers.

I decided to make a trip down to find out about their living spaces and perhaps be able to get more inspirations for my drawings. Although due to security reasons, I was not allowed in to the dormitory area, but I was allowed to take pictures of the exterior of the place. Met some of the workers and got them to pose for me. They were really spontaneous and really nice people.

Here are some more photos of the place. There is even a canteen! The helmet and the boots are the ones that I drew for one of my final pieces!

Week 1 Contour Drawing

Week 1 of class started of where we were to draw with reference to the music being played. It was basically a warm up to the beginning of an excited journey of ARTS!

Here’s the first three sketches I had drawn.

The reason for the final sketch reminds me of oriental music, thus the traditional guy in the middle and the blasting sound gave me the feels for the thick large streaks.

After coming back from a 15 minutes break and with a piece of leaf, we started on contour drawing! It was a pretty new experience as we were told to feel the edges of the leaf and draw the outlines.

And here’s the final piece of our contour drawing! The shoe is courtesy of our classmate! ^^
