2D Mark making: In Class

Finally started experimenting with ink and news print paper!!

mark making using brush (bristle)

I started off with the “normal” things at first to slowly get into the process of mark making.

After that I moved onto things like using the tip of the brush handle instead. No one said I had to use the brush the convectional way lol.

messy workspace

(I brought things like sponge, orange peels (that black colour thingy haha)  some glue gun fails and candles.)

Lino is difficult… T-T

After messing around with objects around me like tissue paper, news print paper and the brush, I moved on to using the cutter for lino.

Linocut is difficult for me. The process of creating a “perfect” curve on the linoleum requires alot of effort and control which can only be gained through practice. ( and talent, maybe)

After I made some prints I decided to move on. (throws lino aside) But here’s how it turned out. I did not follow the way Ms Mimi showed us. Instead of putting the paper on top i smacked the linocut on top of it. Basically i just did whatever I wanted to. Nor did I roll the entire lino with ink, I only rolled ink over the portion I wanted to and I toyed with the materials. After smacking the lino on paper for a few times I decided to smack the paper on top instead. Sometimes I used my hands to press, sometimes I didn’t even bother pressing it. I just did everything on pure instinct.

Heres how it turned out:

some prints

I dont like the fact that one of the “hand” like thingy was covered by the other.

I like the first one (the one on top). Looks abstract, even I don’t understand what I did haha. ( i guess I’m not supposed to)

The lino cut outs

I used the stuff that got cut out to do mark making as well. Sadly I threw the strip away so I could not stick it into my sketchbook.

I ended up with quite a number of prints.

I did reflection for each piece I stucked inside my sketchbook. It was fun to write out my own thoughts.

not everything was serious afterall

Honestly speaking I also wanted to use the spider I caught the day before but i felt really bad so I released it at the staircase before my classmates started screaming/freaking out.

Maybe I should have released the spider outside the ADM building but I think it probably will get eaten outside… I dunno, by birds? I guess I shouldn’t use living things for mark making.

Heres a few pages from my sketchbook:

Documenting: orange peel
The glue gun thingy

I’m not sure how u call that triangular thingy, but it was made using a glue gun apparently. That was what my sister told me when she gave it to me. She told me I can use it for school.

Some stuff I did at home before the lesson:

other than catching the spider ( he ran across my laptop first… he asked for it )

The final works are in my sketchbook… I really like holbein’s granulation!! (Holbein: Peach Black)

After doing the above things, my conclusion:

i think i should start doing more unconevtional stuff. I dont think I will be using watercolour with a brush or even using my watercolour brush like how I did in these photos. After the 2D class on Aug 25th I think I’ll just use whatever I get my hands on.

In short: play!
