Below is the visual sequences in the video: simplicity to complex, to Simplicity again

“The Thing” is an experimental and generative video art with the use of simple chemical reaction in milk, which depicts an alien’s lifecycle abstractly. The autonomous chemistry not only creates chaos and but also free imagination based on individual’s experience and background.

In this stage, the proposed work, in URL link below, is prototype 1, not final and still in the process. The design treatment and editing are going to be more polished in the final work.

FIRST DAY OF SHOOTING

Before starting actual filming, I went down art friend and supermarket to purchase acrylic, food color, milk, cups and ect.

Because I couldn’t find very liquid acrylic. Instead, I have to dilute the paint by myself. And I also prepare food color to try out, as I had the experience of mixing milk and food color before and want to see which medium is better.

Oli is to create bubbles and resemble alien’s big eyes. And dish soup like a catalytic agent is able to spread out the paint and create movement.

In the end, I kind find out that food color is actually better than acrylic paint, in terms of saturation and effect. Acrylic paint intends to sink down and after dropping in dish soup, the color will not be as saturated. But acrylic paint can create minimalistic kind of effect which is also usable.

I also noticed that I need to started small with one or two color, because after a while, the all the colors started to blend and became ugly. After mixing too many colors, it become messy and ugly.

After Effects Composition

All forms are composed in After Effects by simple masking and mirroring effects. I also inverted the color of footages to match my styleframes and moodboard.

Based on the moodboard and concept, I have created a set of styleframes that will set the style of the video. The final composition is going to be involved with more post production in After Effects. Because it is easier to control and achieve the storyline.

THE THING

Having done some test shoot, I finally decided I will go for creating illusional creature with milk and paint.

It is been experimented by others for a lot of time that if you put paint and dish soup together into milk, it will create amazing effect.

The oil will create bubbles that will constrain paint into a sphere.

Test in post production

By mirroring 4 footages, it creates a nice patterns but lesser creature.

By only flipping once and feathering the edges, the visual becomes more lively and organic.

By twisting its hue, it gives more Alien-like look

Concept

It describes a birth of “The Thing” abstractly from nothing to complexity, and finally to nothing again, which indicates the nature of life.

UI EXPERIENCE

This concept is about illusion and depth within UI and data design.

I have a strong interest in designing UI for film. So I want to create this illusional UI tunnel in a abstract form.

I was inspired by an American designer Ash thorp who is specialised in UI design and motion graphics for film.

Solar System

Inspired by Psychedelic revival, Moment Factory, I intended to create a video by introducing different planets in our Solar system in a abstract way, using acrylics and milk to form the texture of the planets’ surface with sound effects.

TIMELESS

I have created some animated photo loop for my previous project. I think it will be visually interesting to continue it.

“Timeless” is about creating a animated loop in a still images, which constructs a beauty between still and motion.

So for this time, I intended to create some daily life scenes in larger and wider composition due to the screen size and capture some routine that this city has like taking mrt, hanging cloth outside.

Datascapes

I wanted to use Air Passenger Arrivals’ data to create a visualisation, calculating the number of passengers coming from developed countries to the undeveloped to Singapore.

Project 3 Zine

Concept

The intention of Zine project is to seek my own identity through the essence of Chinese culture – Food. We have developed a complicated custom, which is deeply based on food and determines our social behavior. It also rooted people to the soil they live on, as it is capable to produce abundant food. Especially during Chinese New Year, the reunion dinner calls every Chinese to return home and celebrate a brand new year with plentiful food.

To make the layout more interesting, I introduced elements like lines, and shapes. It also balances with and unifies the photographs and text. And all the elements are offset for the reason of dynamic composition.

Takeaway

In this project, I have learned a new software InDesign for the first time. I also had a chance to try different ways of creating a booklet, which is an enjoyable experience. What’s more, I’m quite interested in playing with images and typography to make a lively and dynamic composition.

Takeaway

It’s an enjoyable journey of how we have developed a concept and a potential prototype, based on a certain artworks and its history. And this project also become an inspiration for me, as I have never learned about art history so systematically and thought about how to preserve human legacy in a contemporary way. Always looking back to what our ancestors have done can help us generate new ideas. So I believe I have benefited so much from my art history courses.

Walking Home 1

A THOUSAND MILES AWAY

A thousand miles away is a series of 8 printed images, which depicts the concept of home to the artist. As a foreigner living in Singapore, the physical home is rather obscure and intangible. It can be represented as a suitcase which is always on the way. Spiritually, home can be established on the relationship, such as family and friends, and the taste of authentic hometown food. Fellows from the same country speak the same language, share the same jokes and have similar taste. And Food culture has been deeply rooted in Asia. It is popularly said that “民以食为天” which simply means foods are the most important to people.

Timeless photo frames are installed on 3 tables of a corner at ADM library. The videos show ordinary phenomena that Singapore residence experience every day, but inexplicably, are partially static and motional and this comparison portrays the time with a surreal and infinite atmosphere.

Furthermore, time seems to be unnoticeable and faster in library relatively, as students concentrate on their work with so much effort, event without noticing time change outside. The artist is eager to juxtapose Singapore life with the idea of timelessness, as life in Singapore cycles forever in summer and we seldom experience natural phenomenon change. Inspired by Zen(襌), The work captured mundane scenes to express the idea of infinity and relativeness of time, to offer the library users to clear their thoughts and to take time off their work at the library.
