Takeaway

It’s an enjoyable journey of how we have developed a concept and a potential prototype, based on a certain artworks and its history. And this project also become an inspiration for me, as I have never learned about art history so systematically and thought about how to preserve human legacy in a contemporary way. Always looking back to what our ancestors have done can help us generate new ideas. So I believe I have benefited so much from my art history courses.

Task 1

A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
2016
Prints on paper

A thousand miles away is a series of  8 printed images, which depicts the concept of home to the artist. As a foreigner living in Singapore, the physical home is rather obscure and intangible. It can be represented as a suitcase which is always on the way. Spiritually, home can be established on the relationship, such as family and friends, and the taste of authentic hometown food. Fellows from the same country speak the same language, share the same jokes and have similar taste. And Food culture has been deeply rooted in Asia. It is popularly said that “民以食为天” which simply means foods are the most important to people.

Research: ADM Library I

Researching the site – ADM Library

ADM Library is specially designed to reflect the creative and artistic nature of its environment.  It houses a growing collection of resources in the visual arts, architecture, drawing, design, illustration, painting and photography and a strong collection of AV materials. It contains a cinema room, individual A/V viewing carrels, a flexible seating spaces, printing area, writable black glass wall as well as book section.

Stairs to the cinema

Mainly ADM students visit ADM Library for reading books and magazines, doing assignments, relaxing and printing services.

IMG_5690

Normally, most of students will sit at white table area. They can read or use their own laptops there. Seldom people really interact with others, rather doing their own work.

And I also noticed only few people would use A/V viewing carrels. Maybe the place is not comfortable, like a computer lab, compared to Hive’s library. However, people likes to sleep in the library also in the corner. Because library is a quiet and comfortable place, students like to spend whole day there.

Interestingly, there are a few of very large glasses and empty spaces which I could experiment with.

Developing Idea

Initial impression

ADM Library is well equipped with lots research resources and convenient for studying. Sometimes we focus on a project attentively without even knowing a few hours already has past, as if time in library is faster than outside. It inspired me to do a installation about time to let audience experience the idea of time change in library. the focus could be on faster time or timeless experience.

I did some research on history of timekeeping device. It is quite interesting that how ancient people used water and candle to calculate time. And timekeeping devices changed our world where all human activities refer to it.

My initial idea is to build several water timer devices, ranging from 15mins to 1 hour. People can grab any of them for testing and timing their study time.

Another idea struck me in the process is people like to sleeping in ADM Library. I wanted to draw attention on and amplify this issue. Mainly because students don’t get enough sleep or stress out from the school works. So plan A is to lay a few sleeping bags on the big empty area’s floor and put assignment papers or coffee cups and so forth around them. Plan B is to put a figure in only cloth form on a chair. In front of him is a laptop and all rubbishes he consumes.

Motion graphics will occur within the text ” Battle Box”, indicating lots of stories are all related to the main subject.

Reflection

From this project, I had a chance to learn more about the situation in Southeast Asia, especially in Singapore in the 1940s. However, as asking some of my friends about the history of fort canning and Battle Box, I was a bit shocked by their ignorance. I think it is necessary for us to remember that history and not repeat the same mistake. And that’s why it prompted me to make a video to get attractions from the public to visit Battle Box museum.

Task 2

A THOUSAND MILES AWAY
2016
Video

A thousand miles away is a photo essay, in which the artist represents us with a collection of photographs implying the intimacy of home. With ambient sounds playing, audience are led to experience different feelings about home with artist together. As a foreigner living in Singapore, the physical home is rather obscure and intangible. It can be represented as a suitcase which is always on the way. Spiritually, home can be established on the relationship, such as family and friends, and the taste of authentic hometown food.

Brief discussion

As playing a very important part in story-telling,  still images sequence provides us a whole framework of the story and allows audience to observe every image in detail, whereas in moving image, audience have to follow the timeline of the video. However,  still images may also make audience confused. Because it will either give too many clues or little hint that could lead to varies of directions. Under some context, because of culture or background difference, sometimes visual is not enough to bring up or recall some emotion. It needs motion or audio to support the visual content. For instance, in my work, I’m using ambient sound as a second narrative form to bridge the cultural gap as well as add a hearing dimension to my work. If you have never heard of how Sichuan dialect sounds or been to a China restaurant, you will experience it when video plays at related images.

For Ego project, I decided to pursue the style of digital images college. Each single element in the compositions is carefully selected and has its meaning and symbolism. And in each composition, maximal 3 colors will be applied to portray the atmosphere and mood.

EQUATION

1_Aggressive

Aggressive

Though born in a semi-free society, I am more aware of social issues which occurred not only in China, but throughout the world. Imageries like high-rise Shanghai buildings, Tankman in Tiananmen Square protest of 1989 and artist Ai Weiwei represent my aggressive concerns towards what has happened in China. Panda also symbolises my hometown where panda lives. And analogous color scheme in this context, including red, yellow and orange, signify passion and revolution.

2_open

Open

After moving to Singapore, I was fully exposed to western culture and art, like Pop culture. I started to become more acceptable and open to unfamiliar things. Cool blue and violet color scheme gives a mystical atmosphere.

3_That's me

That’s me

ME myself is a mixture and influence of east and west. Panda is the main character in this series as the self portray.

BETTER ME

1_hardworking

Hardworking

One of my strength is hardworking. I will put beyond 100% effort in what I’m doing and push myself into higher levels. Computers, pencil box and tablet represent my usual work place. Coffee signifies the long duration of working hours that I spend normally. Monochromatic beige color scheme creates a sense of calm , determination and softness.

2_Stressed

Stressed

After realising  the whole calendar is completely occupied by works, I alway feel stressed and frustrated. the symptoms of Insomnia and phobia attacks me. Bottle of sleeping pills containing different kinds of software icons explains the reason why I can’t sleep. On the bottle is the label of a calendar with marks anywhere, which indicates bad time management. Behind are the scribbles saying ‘All work and no play make Jack a dull boy’ from the famous psychological horror movie The Shining, which depicts a man becomes a psychopath and tries to kill his family in a hotel after getting too much stress from his work.

Cool colors like violet, red and blue convey a very cold and uncomfortable mood.

3_Better_me

Better me

It would be better if I can balance between life and work and have a much more healthier lifestyle. That’s why, in the composition, there’s a visual harmony fusing working tools and natural forms. Trees have been formed by software icons and birds are from the twitter logo. The panda is cruising around and seems to enjoy his life there.

Complementary color scheme of red and green creates thought the strongest contrast but also the strongest relationship.

IDEAL ME

EQUATION

3

1_confident

Confident

I want to be more confident in many areas, as sometimes I feel less comfortable expressing my ideas and thoughts. I used Renaissance works like Michelangelo’s David as the main subject and Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci as the background. Both works indicates the concept of a universal man, a man can do all things if he will.

Green as the dominate color in triadic color scheme portrays the mood of liveness.

2_Wisdom

Wisdom

Be knowledgable and creative. I believe creativity is based on your capacity of knowledge. The more you learn, the quicker and deeper idea you can get. The story of God creating and enlightening Adam represents my eager of gaining knowledge. Apple, owl, books and so on signify the concept of wisdom.

Beige as the dominate color in triadic color scheme portrays  a sense of knowledge and calm.

3_Ideal me

Ideal Me

As a whole, Triadic color scheme of green, beige and violet creates a high degree contrast but at the same time retrains color harmony. It creates a sense of depth and richness.

The combination of owls wings and David symbolise an ideal me with confidence and wisdom. And the geometric shapes, applied in this series, like square, circle and triangle, indicated my desire to pursue perfection in different fields.

Married

After 5 years, I picture myself getting married with another half. The wedding will be as simple as it shows.

color scheme of aquamarine and light red best convey the minimalism in mood and style of the wedding.

2_professional

Professional

After graduating from school, I also want to be a specialist in typography and UI design, creating decent works for advertising and motion graphics. An myself wedding invitation card is an example of indicating my speciality direction and interest.

3_5_years

Me in 5 years

In 5 years time, I hope I can have my own family and house and do what I like. The 3D typographic building and trees portrays my plan in 5 years.

Warm color, red, green and yellows portray a mood of happiness and harmony.

ABOUT DREAM

About dream is a photo essay portraying the dreams occurring in different levels of sleep, light sleep, deep sleep and REM (rapid eyes movement). Dream in light sleep seems to be a mixture of reality and fiction. In the first stage, I started losing my consciousness and became more tentative of surrounding things, like air-conditioning and fans. Then I morphed into a flying insect and exited my room, which marked the complete loss of consciousness. Dreams now turned to be more vague and hard to recall in deep sleep. Foreground and background appeared to emerge. In the last stage, vivid dreams occurred and were often memorable. In the video, I was put in a familiar, but bizarre place and trying to hide from the crowds. In the middle of escaping from the place, the exposure of myself awakened me to reality.
