1

Concept

As a street photographer, I alway like to take a walk on the street and observe interesting scenes. Every one has an unique way of recognising things. An ‘L’ I composed from a building may not be legible to another person. And the most intriguing aspect of the street is the situation is never predictable. For instance, in the letters ‘L’ and ‘E’, a bird and a person emerged simultaneously when I pressed the shutter.

Concept

Inspired by the low-shutter speed photography, where the light becomes traceable, I was using a light source as a brush to write my name in Chinese. The line of lights have various widths and weights, depict the essence of Chinese script Calligraphy, which ables to finish one character within one stroke.

The intention is to seek the essence of Chinese culture – Food. We Chinese have developed a complicated system and rules about how to eat and what to eat. And even daily greeting also involves ‘food’, like greeting people with ‘have you eaten already?’.

Concept

Living under censorship means only positive information about government is accessible to the public. And media, in China, becomes its mouth and agent, filtering, amending and twisting  what is supposed to be right and true. Using newspaper collage indicates the process of how China media works.

EQUATION

1_Aggressive

Aggressive

Though born in a semi-free society, I am more aware of social issues which occurred not only in China, but throughout the world. Imageries like high-rise Shanghai buildings, Tankman in Tiananmen Square protest of 1989 and artist Ai Weiwei represent my aggressive concerns towards what has happened in China. Panda also symbolises my hometown where panda lives. And analogous color scheme in this context, including red, yellow and orange, signify passion and revolution.

2_open

Open

After moving to Singapore, I was fully exposed to western culture and art, like Pop culture. I started to become more acceptable and open to unfamiliar things. Cool blue and violet color scheme gives a mystical atmosphere.

1_hardworking

Hardworking

One of my strength is hardworking. I will put beyond 100% effort in what I’m doing and push myself into higher levels. Computers, pencil box and tablet represent my usual work place. Coffee signifies the long duration of working hours that I spend normally. Monochromatic beige color scheme creates a sense of calm , determination and softness.

2_Stressed

Stressed

After realising  the whole calendar is completely occupied by works, I alway feel stressed and frustrated. the symptoms of Insomnia and phobia attacks me. Bottle of sleeping pills containing different kinds of software icons explains the reason why I can’t sleep. On the bottle is the label of a calendar with marks anywhere, which indicates bad time management. Behind are the scribbles saying ‘All work and no play make Jack a dull boy’ from the famous psychological horror movie The Shining, which depicts a man becomes a psychopath and tries to kill his family in a hotel after getting too much stress from his work.

Cool colors like violet, red and blue convey a very cold and uncomfortable mood.

3_Better_me

Better me

It would be better if I can balance between life and work and have a much more healthier lifestyle. That’s why, in the composition, there’s a visual harmony fusing working tools and natural forms. Trees have been formed by software icons and birds are from the twitter logo. The panda is cruising around and seems to enjoy his life there.

Complementary color scheme of red and green creates thought the strongest contrast but also the strongest relationship.

1_confident

Confident

I want to be more confident in many areas, as sometimes I feel less comfortable expressing my ideas and thoughts. I used Renaissance works like Michelangelo’s David as the main subject and Vitruvian Man by Leonardo Da Vinci as the background. Both works indicates the concept of a universal man, a man can do all things if he will.

Green as the dominate color in triadic color scheme portrays the mood of liveness.

2_Wisdom

Wisdom

Be knowledgable and creative. I believe creativity is based on your capacity of knowledge. The more you learn, the quicker and deeper idea you can get. The story of God creating and enlightening Adam represents my eager of gaining knowledge. Apple, owl, books and so on signify the concept of wisdom.

Beige as the dominate color in triadic color scheme portrays  a sense of knowledge and calm.

3_Ideal me

Ideal Me

As a whole, Triadic color scheme of green, beige and violet creates a high degree contrast but at the same time retrains color harmony. It creates a sense of depth and richness.

The combination of owls wings and David symbolise an ideal me with confidence and wisdom. And the geometric shapes, applied in this series, like square, circle and triangle, indicated my desire to pursue perfection in different fields.

Warm color, red, green and yellows portray a mood of happiness and harmony.

ABOUT DREAM

About dream is a photo essay portraying the dreams occurring in different levels of sleep, light sleep, deep sleep and REM (rapid eyes movement). Dream in light sleep seems to be a mixture of reality and fiction. In the first stage, I started losing my consciousness and became more tentative of surrounding things, like air-conditioning and fans. Then I morphed into a flying insect and exited my room, which marked the complete loss of consciousness. Dreams now turned to be more vague and hard to recall in deep sleep. Foreground and background appeared to emerge. In the last stage, vivid dreams occurred and were often memorable. In the video, I was put in a familiar, but bizarre place and trying to hide from the crowds. In the middle of escaping from the place, the exposure of myself awakened me to reality.

Principles of Design

Principles of Design

The principles of design describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art.

Balance

Balance is the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture, and space. If the design was a scale, these elements should be balanced to make a design feel stable.  Principles-01

In symmetrical balance, the elements used on one side of the design are similar to those on the other side;

Principles-02-600x300

In asymmetrical balance, the sides are different but still look balanced.

screen-shot-2013-03-25-at-10-46-07

In radial balance, the elements are arranged around a central point and may be similar.

Emphasis

Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

Principles-052-emphasis

Movement

Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

Principles-06

Principles-03

Pattern

Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.

Repetition

Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.

Proportion

Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

Principles-07-600x300

Rhythm

Rhythm is created when one or more elements of design are used repeatedly to create a feeling of organized movement. Rhythm creates a mood like music or dancing. To keep rhythm exciting and active, variety is essential.

Variety

Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.

Project 1b Thinking Sequentially – Text and Image

Fire and Ice

Some say the world will end in fire,

Some say in ice.

From what I’ve tasted of desire

I hold with those who favour fire.

But if it had to perish twice,

I think I know enough of hate

To say that for destruction

Ice is also great

And would suffice.

In my interpretation, fire represents human desire towards natural resources. Whereas, ice expresses hatred towards human themselves, which leads human destruction even deeper and thoroughly. I used images of China air pollution, as a result of burning too much coal and other mechanical materials. Cold war images, like Cuba Missile Crisis photo, and two presidents from USA and Soviet Union depicts two different ideology, which leads hatred and revenge. Desire and hatred have same effect of terminating human race.

But hatred has more power to destroy the whole world.

In the overall composition, images are split into two to bring up the comparison between desire and hatred. In the first image, the pollution cloud and nuclear bomb merge into one cloud to show the similar effect of desire and hatred. The second image depicts an end of the world scene by imitating multiple exposure effects. The third image portrays the difference between two countries. And fourth image depicts Cuba Missile Crisis which is the most dangerous threat to human in history.

An estimated 7 million people die worldwide every year due to air pollution, both indoor and outdoor, and it is now the "single largest environmental health risk", according to a report by the UN World Health Organization (WHO). The reports findings suggested a link between air pollution and heart disease, respiratory problems and cancer, listing it as the cause of about one in eight deaths worldwide. Project 1a Curating Self

Task 1: Me

I believe the best way to understand a person is not only looking through his physical features, but also presenting what does and love. That’s why I’m using indirect method like ID passes, letters from friends, movie tickets and sports gear to portray my existence, personality and interests. It creates a photo staging by lying stuff on the ground.

3 images are laid in one line where “identity”, which has a different backdrop, is in the middle. It enables  viewer to observe the center image first.

Research

Artist reference: Chien-Chi Chang

I was inspired by some of the works from a serial called Jet Lag, done by the Magnum photographer Chien-Chi Chang. These photos were taken during his overseas assignments in the hotel. By lying all his passes and other belongings, I can easily understand what he had been busy with and what purpose his trip is. It is the clarity that inspired me to showcase my belongs in Task 1 to represent myself.

Task 2: Object

Photography is my favorite interest. That’s why camera plays an important role in my life. When I’m photographing, I’ll be more energetic and passionate about everything around me. I used a fast shutter speed to capture the motion. And the most essential part of camera is the lens and the rings on it. By taken a close up of my finger touching it carefully and camera’s perspective of viewing me, the images portray a intimate relationship between me and my camera.

Final chosen images

Task 3: World

Botanic garden is a significant place for me to relax and enjoy the nature. Whenever I feel worn out, I’ll go there to refresh myself. And I also used to hang out and picnic in Botanic Garden with my girlfriend, which are signified by a pair of shadows overlapping to each other. However, some of part of Botanic Garden remains undiscovered. The blur on a child’s face on the third image symbolise the fear and curiosity of nature. Overall, there are alway two people through out the images to depict companionship, which also has been place according to the rule of third.

Research

The technique of shooting the third image was inspired by a unique method. The lens has to be detached from the camera body. You will get the blurring and focusing effect by manually adjusting the lens distance toward the sensor.
