Socially acceptable?

So I know it may sound like tough love, but look, if at some point you got lied to, it’s because you agreed to get lied to. Truth number one about lying: Lying’s a cooperative act. Now not all lies are harmful. Sometimes we’re willing participants in deception for the sake of social dignity, maybe to keep a secret that should be kept secret, secret. We say, “Nice song.” “Honey, you don’t look fat in that, no.” Or we say, favorite of the digiratti, “You know, I just fished that email out of my Spam folder. So sorry.”

Evil Genius, the Dark side of Creativity

http://www.spring.org.uk/2012/02/the-dark-side-of-creativity.php

Extracts:

Creative individuals are more likely to be arrogant, good liars, distrustful, dishonest and maybe just a little crazy.

We hear a lot about the benefits of being creative but less about the dark side of creativity.

An alien observing humans for the first time might wonder why we pay people to lie to us. We would have to explain that we call novels, TV shows and films ‘fiction’, not lies.

Then we’d concede that sometimes we enjoy being lied to, especially when the lies are much more entertaining than reality.

Given all the practice they get, we might expect, then, that creative people should be better at lying.

And, indeed, this seems to be true: Walczyk et al. (2008) tested it by giving participants a series of everyday dilemmas to solve. Highly creative people told more and better lies than those who were less creative.

Honestly is who you are in the dark

However we are currently living in a transparent world

On social media:

“Character’s who you are in the dark. And what’s kind of interesting is that today we have so little darkness. Our world is lit up 24 hours a day. It’s transparent with blogs and social networks broadcasting the buzz of a whole new generation of people that have made a choice to live their lives in public. It’s a much more noisy world. So one challenge we have is to remember, oversharing, that’s not honesty. Our manic tweeting and texting can blind us to the fact that the subtleties of human decency — character integrity — that’s still what matters, that’s always what’s going to matter. So in this much noisier world, it might make sense for us to be just a little bit more explicit about our moral code.”

Lie-spotting

Here’s a video on lie-spotting by a professional lie spotter:

To what extend do people accept being lied to?
A lie only becomes a lie when someone believes it.

How to spot a liar

  • People who are determined to sound convincing will use formal, instead of informal language
  • Distancing language : That woman
  • Discredits the subject
  • Body Language
    – fake smiles
    – no constructs in the eyes
    – honest person is cooperative and willing to brainstorm and infuriated throughout the entire course to be accused
  • Duping Delight
-makes one expression while masking another – leaks another expression

The pretty little white lies we tell

Hello FYP, here we go:

White Lies
Definition: a harmless or trivial lie, especially one told to avoid hurting someone’s feelings.

I am very interested in this topic because it is something that I believe everybody can relate to, It is a very prominent and indispensable part of every society – yet remains very hidden. “Honesty is the best policy” – a common phrase taught since young, but how true is it? Perhaps society can no longer survive without white lies, can everybody accept the brutal truth? Exploring how the society has become unknowingly obsessed with them, are we even aware when we are not being honest?

Examples of some of the most common white lies after some survey:
a) It is beautiful/great.   b) I am on my way.   c) I love you too.

Is it really okay to lie about these things? How does it impact upon the liar when they say such white lies? Positive or negative feelings? Should we stop this obsession? Why has it become an instinct to lie? Why can’t we just be honest?

Are white lies good or bad?

(I hope I’m doing this right! I’m still really confused about OSS and I’ve forgotten my password, I have no idea how to change that baby profile picture – I don’t even know whose baby that is…? Do please pardon my OSS for now I’ll get familiar with it ASAP~)
