Concept

Koi fishes are the common symbol in the Chinese culture. The movement of the koi represents every ups and downs I often encounter in life. Koi on it’s own represents power, confidence, energetic which helps me express my ego. The use of koi and Phoenix shows the power of women and the way it expresses on its own.

EGO THOUGHTS COMPOSITION

[意识]

Below are my selected composition that I narrowed it down. Playing around with the composition and details that symbolises me, I did not forget the design principles which i learnt throughout my whole Foundation 2D module.

Having in mind what i want for my overall look, below are some composition that i selected. The colours used in mostly all the composition are contrasting with each other and it also follows the colour scheme that the Chinese used based on the primary research that I was researching on.

EGO THOUGHTS

Koi fish are a common symbol in the Chinese culture. Many of the attributes of the Koi symbolise several lessons and even trails individuals often encounter in life. The koi symbolises power, energetic , confidence and it also symbolises the ability to fight against odds just like them having the ability to swim against currents and even travel upstream.

Drawing and painting the koi fishes before doing composition, the selection of colours for made me play around with the symbolism of colour. certain colours represent certain aspects or outcomes in life.

Phoenix plays the same as the koi fishes. Phoenix in the Chinese culture represents women, confidence of women and the ability to conquer.

After my primary research, I played around with composition.

Below are the composition, not forgetting the colours contrast and also the principle of the design elements.

WHAT DOES EGO MEANS?

“In this question, ego is a noun that means your consciousness of your own identity. Your ego is your conscious mind, the part of your identity that you consider your “self.” If you say someone has “a big ego,” then you are saying he is too full of himself.”

Assignment 3 is all about confidence and also the way of expressing myself in a unique way. Am into the Chinese characters and the ideation of how the Chinese culture evolve. Below are some illustrated paintings i did during my process and ideation.

EGO INITIAL PLANNING (Pt 0)

Before I finally found my inspiration, I was having mixed thoughts on what should I do for Ego. Inspired by ink diffusion, i had plans on making my whole ego set with abstract pieces but it ended up with no sub headings to represent me at all. Below is my initial planning~~ playing along with inks, oil painting and also wire bending to show the construction and flow of the overall canvas.

[FINAL LAYOUT]

All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

Screen Shot 2015-10-24 at 1.28.46 am

Deriving from the RHYME: All the King’s horses and all the King’s men

I decided to chose this RHYME: All the King’s horses and all the King’s men specifically as it gives me the power of strength and power of full details… I DECIDED TO GO AROUND THIS RHYME WITH DIFFERENT COMPOSITION.

This concept showcases the transition of the Western and Asian culture. What if Humpty Dumpty was converted into Chinese context? I ask myself this question as a starting ground for this project. I don’t really have a specific theme that i want to portray to my concept ,as a whole I want to portray a story about the power and intricacy of the Chinese culture without missing the western culture in it. The use of balance, contrast, composition, rhythm,… which the hand out Professor Ina gave us, I played with the different format, giving all my layout a different feel, look and also different intricacy surrounding it.

“Haute Couture”, I love the way they composite the fine details in the fashion world, so in the details of all the composition, I took into consideration for my planning, dressing each composition differently, giving it a luxury feel towards the end.

*All my works are THRESHOLD as I was so obsessed with the MONOPRINTING technique, making my work very hands on**

This marks the end of Assignment 2. It was a learning experience for me. Composition, balance, contrast… it gave me an idea on playing around with shapes and moving images around to create a composition that tells a story. I enjoy this assignment as a whole, giving me the opportunity to go all out with details and also showcasing my personality in the technique i use. YAY to the end of the project. ALL KING’S HORSES AND ALL KING’S MEN MADE IT TO THE END

Process Post 1

The overdue post for assignment 2 RHYMES is up.

Design is a discipline shaped by a varied and eclectic set of influences from both the past and present. Art has always influenced design. Exploring the western and asian art in different ways, creates a contrasting complex to the design.

The RHYME that i decided to go for:

Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the king’s horses and all the king’s men
Couldn’t put Humpty together again.

Narrowing down, All the king’s horses and all the king’s men ,gives me a powerful yet intricate feeling when I got the assignment brief. And therefore, I decided to go for it as this line gave me a lot of inspirational thoughts. Below are my processes and breakdown of designs.
